@9winters5 Yup, pratice....a lot. :) Seriously though, start simple, like with octives and branch out from there. Try the same lines with a variety of differnt beats from a drum machine, etc. Try to reivent soem lines you already have by tapping them. Also, ever tap a drum beat on a desk or table? Same concept; kick ,snare, and then tapitytapitytapity tap - drum fill. Practice, have fun with it, and you'll get there. Good luck!
Sure you can play some chords on a bass but not such as on a guitar! It is the fuller and mellower sound which makes it so beautiful sometimes like on your strumming version. See people like Stu Hamm or Victor Wooten, they play also exceptional things and that on 4 string Bass which others wouldnt play ever on 12 string guitar1
i found this vid cuz i am thinkin of picking up a bass and giving my guitar a rest. i specifically was wanting to know if it was possible to get good melodies/tones by strumming a bass.
thanks for sharing. can't wait to try it. inspired for sure.
I rarely write comments on YouTube, but i just have to comment this one.
I totally agree with you all. I'im a bass player myself and i just hate the fact, that the bass is way to underrated and mostly has to play the supporting role, while guitarists play their 5 chord song (dont get me wrong, im no music-fashist, i like the eletric guitar too).
thanks for sharing this great video. you totally inspired me.
This beautiful melody goes to show the versatility of the bass. Sadly too many people want to pigeon-hole this amazing instrument into a support-only role, which, in my opinion, silences the potential beauty of all low notes can be.
Thank you so much for posting this. This is exactly the liberated way I hope to play bass one day.
The bass (guitar) is emerging as a full spectrum instrument. When I started playing back in '89 the idea of playing melodies was simply unheard of...although melodic experiments on the bottom have existed for a very long time.
back in 89 u obviously didnt look hard enough dude... check.. les july out on here.. stanley clarke... marcus miller.. even cliff burton!! not too mention Billy Sheehan. Good solid bass playing by urself though! u have the same style as myself due to the inspirational melodic bass players i have heard..
Great job, man!. Somebody once told me that bass is THE strongest melodic instrument in a band, cause it holds the whole armonic structure together while also keeping the rhythm (it was a composer who said so, hehe). Oh, BTW, that Thumb Bass is sweeeeeet =]
Excellent work man. I really enjoyed the rhythm change around 2 mins in followed by that little filler. It gave the song a good bump up and kept it crisp. good work.
good job bro ... i love it man .. is that yours ... damn i need bass player like you for my band .. anyhow i just bought line 6 kb37 im gettin it on tuesday .. cant wait to play with that shit ... see ya
Im terrible at tapping on bass. any tips?

oh yeah - If the bass man plays a wrong note the he can take the whole direction of the song with him, for better or worse.
Done it a few times myself heh heh :)

I completely agree with you. The bass CAN be a strong melodic instrument. Videos like this inspire me every day.
