How did you get that cracked glass effect to be transparent?

Yes, alpha channels. Certain areas of the image are transparent, and the transparency is determined by the shade of gray, black being completely transparent, white being opaque.

Look it up on Google, you'll find some insight there. I'd post a link but it seems Youtube doesn't like that.
