@lindareena Great question. I actually worry more about bears when I'm at shelters rather than tenting. It's because the shelters are frequented more often by people than random tentsites. People bring food and other things which can attract bears. Truthfully, I've only seen one bear while hiking and it was on the AT in New Jersey. They're really just not much of a threat.
@Tuts999 Thankyou so much for answering Tuts! that makes sense those bears love food! ;-) I am so glad I found your videos, been watching for hours! I was at the Historical Park in Fort Lee today just to see the fall leaves...it's 2 minutes from my house so while looking for videos of that when I came home, I ran into your New York Long Trail vid...which I had no idea existed because I'm not a hiker...you are amazing! and interesting and a very nice person! just watched NH White Mt..GREAT!
@lindareena Much thanks. Funny to think I was just two minutes away a few months ago. I'm glad you enjoy the films. Check out my website at trekkingon . com
@Tuts999 I was on your website & saved it!...I still have to see your Vermont hike & the Appalachian Trail...will this weekend..also sent your vids to my daughter & SIL...under the GWB, a tad north of it there are stone "steps" that zig zag up to the top of the cliff, fun to climb..people say George Washington's troops laid them but I don't know if that's true...very steep..then there is Allison Park which you probably walked past..it's great that the Palisades Interstate is protected land!
I ran out of room but wanted to say I plan to go up to the Historical Park and find that tree with the NY Long Trail emblem on! LOL...never noticed that before..also I'm looking forward to your future hiking videos! Have a wonderful time and thankyou again
If you had a M 1966 hammock and CS Kukri Machete you could camp in the woods and not pay a dime. Remember that if they can't see you they don't know where you are. Also the spread of a tarp for a hammock gives you more real estate than a cramped one man tent. Hammocks can be hung on uneven ground. This is another huge advantage. The M 1966 can hold a full size thermarest Z lite and sleeps like a army cot. Very comfy.
@andrewsheldonreeves Actually, I never stealth camp. Too many hikers camp on private property or public property where camping is prohibited. My opinion of it is that it gives us all a bad name. This is why parts of the New York Long Path have had to be taken out of forests and put onto roads in some locations. It also makes it more difficult for the trail conferences and such to get permission to put trails through private property if the landowners know that people are going to camp anyway
@normbld Thanks so much. It's a Eureka Solitaire one man tent. I do like it, and it's really light (about 2 lbs), but I HATE having to carry it. In the final video in this film, I talk about some of my gear, the tent is one of those pieces.
Do you ever have to worry about bears when you stay in the tent? ps: thankyou for making these videos...fascinating to me! going to #5 now

Really enjoying the videos, quick question, what type of tent are you using and do you like it?
