i frist heard this cut around 1979 in Mobile, alabama standing on Davis avenue and joacim street and it certaintly got my attention for sure. iwas quite young and was'nt t familiar with "Little Esther" my,. was she bad.
@TheMariesprings If that was the case then she refered to the addition as darling, I can't imagine any addict referring tio the substance as darling, when and addition is pure hell, I can't imagine herion being called darling anything but "Darling" Herion is "F" Death, I, and other herion user know what that shit is, let's call it accordingly.
Soulful & sublime, Esther Phillips singing "Release Me" was my first exposure in my teens to this amazing singer whose catalog is full of incredible performances that cover all the bases in music...thankfully got to see Esther "live" a number of times and recommend anything she recorded...RIP great lady and you are missed!
this was a great grind-em-up when I was a teen. Grind-em-up=simulated sex or what was later called 'dirty dancing' done by us African-americans because the females were so up tight they would not give us no poontang. we would jizz in our pants and be mad we could not do the 'big Monkey'.

A #1 hit for Little Esther Phillips on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 101st #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #8 on the Top 40 charts.

No one sings this song the way Little Esther did. She was and is untouchable on this song.

I've loved this since I first heard it in the sixties before Engelbert Humperdinck covered it.
I posted her singing, "Set Me Free" and it was immediately removed as contravening copyright.
Strange.
