Thanks for the great video! For solo people it's obviously much easier. When you get to an actual campground, you can set up a tent that expands your square footage by about 50 to 125%. Best that it's a tent you can stand up in. If the tent has only one door, face the door towards an open door of the car and connect the two. Some of the larger tents now have fabric walls you can velcro or tie into place, so you then have a 2 or 3 room tent. Thanks for the articulate video!

A great way to further research this topic is to join Vandwellers on yahoogroups. On that group there are hundreds of people living in cars and vans, or who have lived in them, and people with other alternative mobile lifestyles. They're very friendly, honest, and helpful. The group has an excellent search engine as well.
@gregry111 Sorry you're having a hard time accessing Vandwellers. There are over 8000 members and over 150,000 emails in the archive on countless topics. I realize you're no longer interested, but I wouldn't want to discourage others from joining.
@alabamabregan Well I'm sure it would be a valuable source of information if I could get in. I don't want to discourage anyone but if I can't get in I can only assume that others can't either and I wouldn't want to offer false encouragement to them.
@gregry111 I respect that you cannot get into the group and believe you. @alabamabregan Well, I may have done something wrong. For one thing I don't know what a Yahoo ID is. I just made up a username and then a password. If a Yahoo ID must be established first, how do you do it?

Car living is a good option. But when you add gas, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation, it's still costing you 400/month. May as well rent a room in a house for 600/month and forgo the hassle of sleeping in a car that's too cold, too hot, too small, and generally too inconvenient. Or try house sitting. Or become truly homeless and move to a beach town in California and sleep in the nooks and crannies of a city or town.
@alabamabregan I guess you missed a tiny detail. If you do that you still have to pay for gas, insurance, maintenance and depreciation as he was doing when he moved to the car. AND pay rent, utilities, etc. Did you start watching in the middle? LOL
@alabamabregan Not to mention, there are work camper jobs available for people with no experience directed towards people with exaclty this lifestyle, living on the road and camping. If it's ok to live in an RV and explore/travel the country, what's wrong with a van? You may not be able to do it, but who's to say someone else can't? You know, there was a time when people didn't have central air to control the temperature around them and they did just fine. Some people CHOOSE this life.
@alabamabregan It's all about your priorities. I'd rather spend 400/month on traveling around the country and doing what I want to do than working a 9-5 boring job. Besides, it may be 400/room where you are (not where I am), but even if you get it that cheap, you have to pay utilities, renters/homeowners insurance, maintenance on the house, gas to go to work..etc. It really isn't a comparison money-wise for most people. If you live in a place where rent is that cheap, it's most likely not great
@jbenn88 I guess I missed how you would make money just traveling around and doing what you wanted. It sounds appealing. I mean - money for gas...etc.?

@needparalegal " Asians don't commit violent crime"??? Try living on the West coast and make that statment. Living in a vehicle is different. You need to be prepared for anything including the cops showing up late.
This is all great. You seemed to have made a transition to become a mobile resident. This can be scary for many who have normal living. But, for those who are truly homeless, no job, no basically anything your ideas would be difficult to create or obtain with zero in the bank. Although, you have got it to a acceptable level. Night time security needs more attention for many reasons obviously. I made it from literally living on the street with no "anything" except the cloths on my back.
There's more! You learn as you go. Ive spent MANY years on the road. I would travel each year and return home in the summer only. Used to do it for fun. I considered it a challenge and adventure. No housing or job planned - half the time, no destination til I liked an area. Result: Stories and knowledge. 1) Dinner with Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears (Minturn Country Club, Minturn Co, Dec 31st 2000) - Big Rob is AWESOME (nice guy!) 2) Free lift tickets to Vail & others 3) Traveled! :)
5) Libraries. Internet & indoor plumbing, heat and cool. Daytime parking lot.
6) Gym membership. Think national chain (Planet Fitness). Showers, entertainment, fitness & potable water. Low cost, many location, many 24hr & night time parking lot.
7) Carry small pocket notebook. Get organized - write it down. Use your NON CAR time wisely. Use internet time/access wisely and Craigslist the gigs/jobs.
8) Zzzz? Walmart, truck stops, gyms and way way off grid side streets.
I have been living in my Xterra for a week now. I was so scared but it is not that bad. Nobody has bothered me about parking at night. I got the gym membership for a shower. I have been working out more, you can't just go directly to the shower, they would think that was weird. I do have a problem with condensation on the windows. Do you have a link for the dehumidifier?
dude, you rock. we need car parks all over the usa. that will solve the affordable housing issue. clearly housing is out of step with incomes these days. my vehicle is paid off. why can't i live in it?!?
I wanna live lean!!! I wanna go on a roadtrip and snooze in my car...but not get murdered. I have a hatchback and i just tested it out tonight-its perfect for sleeping!
I think that a Holden/ Opel Combo van would be a good vehicle for someone to live in. I'd be worried about safety though, but apart from that if you are organized you could make it work. Unfortunately I've got a honda del sol which is impossible to live in :(
Good for you!! The trend will force a lot of people to live this way. Its a state of mind, and you took a positive route. I am about to dump my Cable TV garbage programming meaningless drivel and watch You Tube. At least you learn something here. cheers The amount of money you save on a motel for one night, you can spend in gas to go tour the country. Live lite, live free, peace out!
1 if u had friends?? ..you could even save more money and be more comfortable ..and just give them $50 a week and sleep on their couch and pitch in on food and you would have full access to a shower and the shitter daily.and 2 find yourself a ugly fat chick on welfare and stay with her and your food and your housing will be free of charge .i've had to do!!!!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being cheap. Sure it doesn't drive and economy but there are millions will to be a slave to the the capitalist system of work work work just to live like the jones. I divided my payments by the hours worked and then by the pay/hr and found that I could chunk at least 20 hours a week and just work part time. For almost 6 years I have been hiking and biking and just enjoying all the free time I know have. I save and pay cash. No loans and no debt ! Good Luck
When I was a kid, and I turned 18, I lived in my VW beetle, in the late 70's. I had a blast, and got to meet lots of people, hung out on beaches in Florida, and made my way to the West coast. I had taken the money I saved for gas, and worked odd jobs later on, when I ran out.. Later on, I lived in a '72 Sedan Deville, in my late 20's in Utah, while I was learning to drive trucks. I started a career that lasted over twenty years. Now, I got a house/land in Missouri. Was fun!
@TheManPictMohawkGaul doesnt make him deranged..sometimes it is out of necessity and sometimes it good to know you can...i KNOW i can survive and the way our economy is going a lot more people will be sleeping in their cars soon..will than make them deranged too?
Im 12 and i have lived in a derango for 12 years not because we have to but because there is benefits and we travel a lot its not that hard. you probably need a power converter you pick them up at schmucks for 150.00 and if u can afford it a laptop and a wireless internet adapter and if you get a laptop and a wireless internet u have TV
Well, the main issue about living in our vehicles is about the cold in the winter.
Here in Brazil or in some other countries that has a warm weather all year long, its not so difficult to live in a vehicle or trailer, but in cold weather like in the northern U.S. Canada, europe and Russia, you´ll need to have a heating system or there´s no way you can live in your vehicle. It´s much more difficult to keep a vehicle heated rather than a home. The cold is the main problem
@edviperrrr actually i lived in my car over the winter ..which was veryyyy ruff this year...you can do it ..layer your clothing put a hat on and make sure you have plenty of blankets..fleece especially...i also found my feet were warmer if i kept my socks on but took my shoes off and wrapped them in the blanket..also a pop bottle with hot water in your clothes will add extra warmth..plus if wake up really cold you can turn the heat on for a few :) btw im in connecticut usa
@silverwolf6970 I´ve lived in the U.S. in Utah for most part of the time. I´ve thought to live in my vehicle too,
as I got laid off and couldn´t find another job. Well, I had 2 choices, to go to a shelter or to live in my vehicle, or to come back to my mom´s home in Brazil. After 5 years living in the U.S. I decided to return to home.
The shelters were full all of them, and like I commented, I was a little afraid of the cold in the winter, so the best choice was to come back home.
hey you should be a guest on survivalpodcasting's Channel , you speak well and i think you would relate to his audience well. Might be a good business venture there.
wow. what a great video. seriously, thank you so much for putting this up here. if for nothing else it teaches us to have appreciation for the little things AND also empowers us to know that we don't need so many materialistic things to be happy.
@hypnos315 Use a P.O. Box as an address, O and some gyms let you have an address like the YMCA, You can have a PO on your DL to. As far as insurance, have it wired from to your checking account. I lived out of my truck for almost a year. Truck shells have there up's and downs specially if you work construction and have tools. Saw and buckets of tool in back.
Phoenix AZ is nice in the winter time but tough in the summer. Always looking for shade.
i done this for a half a year and will be living in my car again on the 1st of april out of financial nesscesity it aint pretty but its do able certain cars are more comfortable then other though lol. as for the law they can be a pain in the butt but if you live near a interstate park at a rest area perfect place to spend the night
Great video! If I could make a very strong suggestion, that would be to get a full size van to do this! I did in the past and I'm telling you, it's a whole lot easier and gives you more options. Like using inverters for cooking, computer etc. I did it for about 5 years. It really is what you make of it . Stay clean and out of trouble!
Im goin to do this in a few days im soooo nervouse yet sooo excited. my life is goin to change, . I have no kids, no girlfriend, no warrants, etc.... im goin to feel so freeee
but due to the fact that i cant tell any family/friends, because they would think im crazy, i would like one of you guys/girls to text me some tips, and so i can have somone to talk to about this. Not being able to talk to anyone about it is really hard text me 347 506 7521
This was really good. There's videos from folks who were forced to suddenly live in their vehicle, and they were unprepared. But if you have time to prep, money to do so, etc, it seems you can make it very viable and comfortable. Been giving this some consideration.
Thank you for this! It's been depressing & painful having to live in my car with my family but I'm really trying to look at the bright side & this helped!
This type of "non-standard home living" WILL become more commonplace as our economy sinks even deeper. I would say it would benefit you to have your vehicle paid off though.
3rd post...My family (in other city) gave me the hardest time. Everyone thought I was insane. Couldn't dare chance telling coworkers. I really considered buying a vanagon or camper van but found a room rental for $260 a month w/includes utilities, full range of the kitchen and washer/dryer. I really enjoyed my experience...
2nd post.. The Post Office gave me hell trying to rent a box. I ended up at a mom/pop mail center.
Plus side....saved money, parked near job, dropped a few pounds and forced to get out and do things.
Cons....Keeping computer/cell charged, cooking was a hassle (wish I thought about eating raw foods), keeping warm/cold, Ironing clothes in the gym, Ice for the cooler, exercising every day just so I could shower, #1 mistake was telling family.
I lived (urban stealth) in a compact car for 2 months when I relocated for a job after being unemployed for 2 yrs. I rented a storage bin, got a $10 (monthly) gym membership for showering, purchased a cooler, coleman camper stove, a few compact cooking pieces, lawn chair for relaxing in the park, pillow, blanket and some reusable window tint from Kmart.
I'd rather buy a multi-unit building and have it not only put money in my pocket as a long term investment whereby my mortgage is paid off by someone else, but some of my monthly bills will be covered as well if I so choose - not to mention tax advantages.
Frugality is all about reducing you monthly expenditures so you have the ability to create superior wealth using a modest or a low income. I bet my total monthly expenses could easily be less than payments and insurance on an Exterra.
I have the feeling the type of car really matters. A small, old car would not give you the comfort, space and privacy of a larger vehicle. Also, your location, since there're areas with very cold winters and lots of snow (again, the better the vehicle the easier) I cannot but admire those who try this and are able to see its positive side. This is much better than living in some shelters. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It is very helpful.
I'm a college student and I am contemplating taking out a student loan and pocketing the money i'd spend on 'living expenses' to buy a cargo van and live in it. my city, san francisco, is insanely expensive. living in a van would make me feel as if i'm stealing 1,000 dollars a month in rent :)
You can find a room for $200-500 bucks...Then use their power, showers, toilet, stove, microwave, fridge etc... A Mobile Home is also cheap but people are gonna call you a trailer trash just because you live in a trailer lol Living in the car can be done...You'll probably spend most of your time at the gym, bookstores, cafes, mall, beach, work and then just use the car for sleeping...You don't even need to pay for internet....Just use public wifi.
I'm was thinking about going on a long roadtrip without having to pay for motel. I was thinking about installing a solar panel on my flatbed trailer for electricity and tow it with my Ford Expedition...The Ford Expedition is spacious so i can sleep in it with no problem....I could take a shower at rest areas for $5 or find an LA Fitness Club where i'm passing through to use the shower. Now living in your car is not such a good idea because you can find a cheap room for rent for like $300.
Add a couple testimonials by others who tell about you living lean. This will and creadence to your videos. Otherwise everyopne out here is not sure if you actually live this way or you are just selling your websites. A few good ideas though, thanks!
Thanks for sharing. When you live this way intentionally, it really can work well. I love your ideas; the container on top, eating raw, zero degree sleeping bag, dehumidifier, gym membership, larger social life. You are truly a man who sees the blessing in life.
WOW! I did this 4 years ago, and yes I did save enough for a good down payment on my condo here in Hawaii. I love the Marine Corp references. I was a marine as well so Semper Fidelis
@nujazzplay : I'm thinking about living in my car for financial reasons. How do you keep warm in the car during the winter months if you live in a cold climate? Please explain. Thank you.
@LaoSoftware Get a really good sleeping bag.. and actually less clothes is best as your clothes hold in sweat which makes you cold. You can get a spare marine battery that you put in the trunk that you charge through the cigarette lighter, then get a 12 volt inverter rated for 500 watts then a electric blanket. Kept toasty on the coldest of nights. You can also get these heat packs to throw in the bottom, my feet got cold most and you don't want to wear socks if you do get huge ones.
I have done this for many years off and on. I home schooled my children. I am a house painter/drywall person. I am 74 this coming Nov. I could do this again. Great way to meet the best of people. We may have to do this in the near future. The recession is not over and worse coming. I met allot of people living in cars, vans, motor homes. many are losing their homes. I am semi-retired up in Payson, AZ in a nice two story cabin with my wife....
$1,000 a month or more is quite common in New York City for studios and, if you're lucky, one-bedrooms. You're better off here in the Midwest where your housing budget's not eaten alive by big city rates. $500 or so a month is relatively common for nice two-bedrooms out here. As for living lean, my car died in mid-August of 2010 and I have not replaced it as I've chosen to live lean in that regard. I walk and bike now, and only rent cars when necessary for out of town trips or vacations.
FifthAve...its hard at first but after a while I found it pretty easy....I felt like a freak too then people at work confided they wished they could do it.
You know I have been thinking of doing this...thank you for this video. Felt like a freak for thinking about doing this but in a way, it's just a simple life. I have a job but I have a lot of bills. Not worth paying $1000 for a one bedroom apartment.
Great information and videos Rich. I have lived in a truck and camper for many years. They were some the best times of my life. Ofcourse my camper had a shower, toilet, frig, flat screen tv/dvd player, queen size bed and internet . Sell that Nissan and get a truck and camper. You can live like a king instead of just surviving in your Nissan. I have been involved wth rvs for about 20 years now and instruct people how to live off the grid being mobile but with all the comforts of home.
Check this out guys, it is a lot better :

1) Don't tint your windows or buy windshield shades - this causes attention and curiosity and attracts police to your vehicle.
2) Craigslist FREE section. Get a twin mattress (free) & buy tan or gray sheets.
Cut & use top sheet as window treatments during the night. Off during the day.
Fitted sheet & pillow case on the bed.
3) Build or create a platform if you can (milk crates zip tied together UPSIDE DOWN) - stable & storage.
4) Walmart, truck stops or quiet way, way side streets only!

$1200 rent?
$300 gas?
Here's a thought...GET AN APARTMENT CLOSER TO WORK!
No, better yet, be someone's roommate (half the cost right there)
Reflector screen and tinted window attract police...dial 911, it's SO MUCH faster!

What kind of dehumidifier can you get that stays charged for a week??
ZX9RinHollywood 4 months ago
I have been living in my Xterra for a week now. I was so scared but it is not that bad. Nobody has bothered me about parking at night. I got the gym membership for a shower. I have been working out more, you can't just go directly to the shower, they would think that was weird. I do have a problem with condensation on the windows. Do you have a link for the dehumidifier?

Was fun!

I´m Edward from Brazil.
The cold is the main problem
edviperrrr 8 months ago
@edviperrrr actually i lived in my car over the winter ..which was veryyyy ruff this year...you can do it ..layer your clothing put a hat on and make sure you have plenty of blankets..fleece especially...i also found my feet were warmer if i kept my socks on but took my shoes off and wrapped them in the blanket..also a pop bottle with hot water in your clothes will add extra warmth..plus if wake up really cold you can turn the heat on for a few :) btw im in connecticut usa
silverwolf6970 8 months ago
@silverwolf6970 I´ve lived in the U.S. in Utah for most part of the time. I´ve thought to live in my vehicle too,
as I got laid off and couldn´t find another job. Well, I had 2 choices, to go to a shelter or to live in my vehicle, or to come back to my mom´s home in Brazil. After 5 years living in the U.S. I decided to return to home.
The shelters were full all of them, and like I commented, I was a little afraid of the cold in the winter, so the best choice was to come back home.

I'm curious as hell about what do you use for an address for your drivers license, insurance etc???
hypnos315 11 months ago 2
@hypnos315 Use a P.O. Box as an address, O and some gyms let you have an address like the YMCA, You can have a PO on your DL to. As far as insurance, have it wired from to your checking account. I lived out of my truck for almost a year. Truck shells have there up's and downs specially if you work construction and have tools. Saw and buckets of tool in back.
Phoenix AZ is nice in the winter time but tough in the summer. Always looking for shade.

This was really good. There's videos from folks who were forced to suddenly live in their vehicle, and they were unprepared. But if you have time to prep, money to do so, etc, it seems you can make it very viable and comfortable. Been giving this some consideration.

I really enjoyed my experience...
champagne5552000 1 year ago
2nd post.. The Post Office gave me hell trying to rent a box. I ended up at a mom/pop mail center.
Plus side....saved money, parked near job, dropped a few pounds and forced to get out and do things.
Cons....Keeping computer/cell charged, cooking was a hassle (wish I thought about eating raw foods), keeping warm/cold, Ironing clothes in the gym, Ice for the cooler, exercising every day just so I could shower, #1 mistake was telling family.
champagne5552000 1 year ago
I lived (urban stealth) in a compact car for 2 months when I relocated for a job after being unemployed for 2 yrs. I rented a storage bin, got a $10 (monthly) gym membership for showering, purchased a cooler, coleman camper stove, a few compact cooking pieces, lawn chair for relaxing in the park, pillow, blanket and some reusable window tint from Kmart.
continued in next post....

AmericanCritiquer 1 year ago
I have the feeling the type of car really matters. A small, old car would not give you the comfort, space and privacy of a larger vehicle. Also, your location, since there're areas with very cold winters and lots of snow (again, the better the vehicle the easier) I cannot but admire those who try this and are able to see its positive side. This is much better than living in some shelters. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It is very helpful.
goonagoonn 1 year ago
I'm a college student and I am contemplating taking out a student loan and pocketing the money i'd spend on 'living expenses' to buy a cargo van and live in it. my city, san francisco, is insanely expensive. living in a van would make me feel as if i'm stealing 1,000 dollars a month in rent :)
einetutterauchen 1 year ago
You can find a room for $200-500 bucks...Then use their power, showers, toilet, stove, microwave, fridge etc... A Mobile Home is also cheap but people are gonna call you a trailer trash just because you live in a trailer lol Living in the car can be done...You'll probably spend most of your time at the gym, bookstores, cafes, mall, beach, work and then just use the car for sleeping...You don't even need to pay for internet....Just use public wifi.
cleberinthearea 1 year ago
I'm was thinking about going on a long roadtrip without having to pay for motel. I was thinking about installing a solar panel on my flatbed trailer for electricity and tow it with my Ford Expedition...The Ford Expedition is spacious so i can sleep in it with no problem....I could take a shower at rest areas for $5 or find an LA Fitness Club where i'm passing through to use the shower. Now living in your car is not such a good idea because you can find a cheap room for rent for like $300.

@nujazzplay : I'm thinking about living in my car for financial reasons. How do you keep warm in the car during the winter months if you live in a cold climate? Please explain. Thank you.
LaoSoftware 5 months ago
@LaoSoftware Get a really good sleeping bag.. and actually less clothes is best as your clothes hold in sweat which makes you cold. You can get a spare marine battery that you put in the trunk that you charge through the cigarette lighter, then get a 12 volt inverter rated for 500 watts then a electric blanket. Kept toasty on the coldest of nights. You can also get these heat packs to throw in the bottom, my feet got cold most and you don't want to wear socks if you do get huge ones.
