That should have read 912. The rest was the manager did the appraisal. I told him of walking 1.3 miles to the bus line and taking the bus downtown to buy Autoweek to read about his and other driver's exploits in the 917. He didn't charge me for the appraisal and asked me what value I wanted placed on it.
The 917/30 was purely a Can-Am car of the Roger Penske Racing organization. It never ran at LeMans. Back then the sports car magazines stated that it had 1,300 hp on full boost. The 917/10s ran in European races for privateers. The regular 917s were called Kurtz and Langheck. I hope I spelled that right. I never read anything, and I read all about them, ever being called Kurtzheck. Back in the '80s I had to go to Brumos Porsche to get my ratty 922 appraised for insurance. Brian Redman, the mana

@macmacma In 1969, the #12 and #14 Porsches were certainly 917's... At that point, there was not yet a distinction between the Kurzheck and the Longheck, so there's not really a point in calling it anything other than a Porsche 917. #12 was driven by Richard Attwood and Vic Elford. #14 was driven by Rolf Stommelen and Kurt Ahrens...

@MegaLiopleurodon The car list for GT5 says that the Porsche 917 and some of its modified versions are going to be in the game, at least that's what I saw. They better put it in or else...
everything about this car makes me sooo want to see it in real life, racing at full speed. was to le mans in the 90s, but to see this just makes me want to be 30 years older :-)
You'd have to be a fool not to consider this one of the greatest race cars ever built. It transformed the world of racing and set higher standards for all.
extraordinaire le mythe 917 et ses top pilotes elford larrousse stommelen rodriguez seppi siffert oliver magique et la musique ....top une autre avec le son de la bete serait top MERCI MERCI
Best Racing car ever built IMHO, not only looked the business but held the record for top speed down the Mulsanne until the 962 hit 252 mph..... Porsche definitely knew how to build racers.
Just returned from the Historics at Laguna Seca. Seemed like everywhere I turned, 917's, 908's 910's.. amazing chills - memories from Lemans to being there at Monterey in the very early 70's watching the Can Am series where Porsche debuted the 917-10 with Follmer and Haywood (if my memory serves me right) then with the 917-30 driven by the late Mark Donohue. After just 1 lap, cars coming through turn 8, there were the Porsches as if in there own race. Killed the Can Am series - what a shame.
You cannot compare this with Bellof and Ickx because it was just a few seconds after the start, rather slow though. At the end Jo Siffert was in front and won the race. I saw this right from the stands next to Eau Rouge. I´ll never foreget.
Those two going side-by-side into Eau Rouge is one of the most brilliant and most insane things I have ever seen! Can you tell me what year that was and who the two drivers were? Was one of them Rodriguez? Do you have more video of that race?
undoubtly the greatest most awesome competition car EVER built, I have loved sportscar racing for over 40 yrs and this is still the benchmark car for all others to be measured against. There has never been a car built since that comes anywhere near it - if God has a car it would be a 917.
Absolutely! This is THE racecar past and future. Because of all regulations these days no racecar will come near the 917 probably ever. For some tracks they uped the boost to over 1600 BHP. A fantastic beast of all time
Just think, If they updated the aero-package, and "tuned" the motor, it would stil be outlawed at Le Mans, almost 40 years later for being "too" fast.
Porsche stepped into racing with a 917 in 1969. Air-cooled flat-12 engine powered the 917 to 15 wins in world sports-car races from 1969 to 1971, after which it was outlawed by a rules change at Le Mans. The following year Porsche came back with a 16 cylinder 1100 bhp "turbo panzer" which was clocked at 221 MPH at Talledega with Mark Donohue driving in "1974". This was one bad ass car.
Well not quite. the 16 Cylinder was tested for Can Am, but the results werent as good as they hoped. They decided to use the 5.0 912.10 type motor, and twin turbo it. in 72 Penske created the 917/30 Can AM car, having now a 5.4 litre twin turbo motor which could be boosted as high as 1500 hp in qualifiying trim and 1100 in race trim. when the gas crunch came they saw it as an opportunity to ban that car by making fuel consumption limits. the 917/30 went to talladega and made the record run.
I'm a fan of 917 k. i think that 917 is and will be the best race car. shame that the racing cars of today are not what this car had. Nowadays there is too much electronics, tcs, abs.
When tearing around in my noisy, mid-engine supercharged NSX street car, i have the fantasy of racing at Le Mans, but eventually realize that it's a pathetic substitute for my childhood dream of being behind the wheel of a 917.
I am never failed to be moved by the energy and passion in honour of the 917 and their prodigious do-or-die drivers in this superb video. Economically these are hard times indeed, yet this vid pumps me up to such a state I forget the depressed state of affairs and my dreams are heroic and triumphant.
This car is the greatest of all race cars, unfortunately the video, while fantastic, leaves out the most critical part of this car's legacy. This car would not be anywhere near what it was and is if not for the late Mark Donohue, winner of the 1972 Indy 500 and 917 driver and engineer. He drove and developed the Sunoco 917-30 into legend. Read his book, "The Unfair Advantage."
Perfect Video. THX. My all-time-favorite race car. The Beauty to look at and the Beast to drive with or against. I grew up with this car without even knowing what it was able to do on track. Must have been 1971, when I, being 8 and my brother being 7, got 2 remote-controlled wire-connected 917s. Later we had one as a slot car. Like the Le Mans movie. Man, where is the time machine to get me back into such races as a 917-driver I want it - now !!!
The 917 and Ferrari P4 are amongst my top-ten childhood car-crazy memories. I have Vics book and I have driven a Porsche for 7 years, a great driver with excellent performance driving advice.
For this montage/homage the music is perfect, and emotive. Blood guts, and sacrifice on the Championship glory trail in the legendary 917 can only be captured this way. Pathe news reel quality reportage is only good for a full length documentary feature.
The best car of all times, theres no car that can match what the 917 did in its time. There are few cars now that can match the 917 performance figures, such a sad solution to alter the lemans rules so that it would stop participating and winning.
siffert ,rodriguez, kinnunen, redman, elford, piper, attwood, kauhsen,jÖst,larrousse, hobbs, heilwood, herrmann, lins, ahrens jr,steinemann, bell this are the 917 drivers
That should have read 912. The rest was the manager did the appraisal. I told him of walking 1.3 miles to the bus line and taking the bus downtown to buy Autoweek to read about his and other driver's exploits in the 917. Lol you can't say that because you don't know that there are plenty of good drivers.

Nice video.
Was it "Quick Vic" Elford doing the 'monumental drift' in the wet 0:47 ? (Bet he was pleased that he collected that one! ;o)

That car def moves for it's technology level. Check out the 917 incar cam going around the De La Sarthe track.

@ NickTheBubbl => no, it's not a 512M at 1:28, it's a 512S.
The 512M was first used at Zetwleg at the end of the 1970' season.
At 1:28, the action is at Monza in may 1970...

is that a 512m at 1:28?

They were the Group B cars of closed circuits... The ultimate and most advanced response to those who said that Ford was invencible.

Goose bumps all over, 917 rules. Check out Vic Elford's Porsche High Performance Driving Handbook. It is worth owning.

The overtake attempt at Eau Rouge was insane.
jeanmouldi 3 years ago
to jeanmouldi - definately!
I guess they were Siffert and Rodriguez involved in a family fight inside the Gulf/Wyer team. They were the top drivers in the team.
Tragically both of them perished a short time later.By the way,an identical insane attempt
was carried on by Bellof on Ickx exactly at the same section of the track. This time with a deadly endling.

Great video of the most legendary racecar ever.
The 917's just blew the competition out of the water when it came. Imagine watching these cars race in the early 70's.
Oh and that guy @2:00 is Ferry himself :)

At 0,48 - great control (Rodriguez ?)
at 0.56 - good bye GT40 on Daytona bankings
at 1,25 - a family disagreement at Eau Rouge
Excellent job dedicated to one of the finest
and fastest racing sport cars ever.
Thx.for sharing.

The best car of all times, theres no car that can match what the 917 did in its time. There are few cars now that can match the 917 performance figures, such a sad solution to alter the lemans rules so that it would stop participating and winning.

I think you forgot Donahue .
Mark Donahue died testing a 917/30 (the 1100 hp twin turbo flat 12 (Can-Am).
And they could turn it up to 1550 hp.
Anyway,I saw that Can-Am Porsche at Laguna Seca in 1973 or 4. What a memory.
Thats All.
