  • That should have read 912. The rest was the manager did the appraisal. I told him of walking 1.3 miles to the bus line and taking the bus downtown to buy Autoweek to read about his and other driver's exploits in the 917. He didn't charge me for the appraisal and asked me what value I wanted placed on it.

  • The 917/30 was purely a Can-Am car of the Roger Penske Racing organization. It never ran at LeMans. Back then the sports car magazines stated that it had 1,300 hp on full boost. The 917/10s ran in European races for privateers. The regular 917s were called Kurtz and Langheck. I hope I spelled that right. I never read anything, and I read all about them, ever being called Kurtzheck. Back in the '80s I had to go to Brumos Porsche to get my ratty 922 appraised for insurance. Brian Redman, the mana

  • took balls to race this car

  • Bring the shapes and curves back!

  • the 1971 winner was not the 1970 no.25 LH. It was a new car built around an experimental magnium chassis

  • One wonders if that car would pass the current gov't crash tests in the lab.

  • Side by side thru Eau Rouge - BALLS OF STEEL!!!!! esp. back then when crashing at that speed meant almost certain death!! This was when motor racing was worth watching, now we have overpaid "steerers" in glorified sewing machines!

  • @BlackAndBluez Such a shame that I have to agree with you on all counts, b&bz..can I use that "glorified sewing machines" line with my racing mates in the future?!!

  • @mattforrester1973 Of course you can. I'll expect a royalty every time you do though! haha

  • The Legend..........

  • Not a Porsche fan, but these guys always do their homework. This was one car thats my favorite though. This is the one exception.

  • Jo siffert..............Rip

  • Great video

  • 1:22 holy fuck that was o'rouge wasnt it? are they crazy to overtake in o'rouge on a wet track sitting in a porsche 917? jesus christ that was fucking insane

  • Bentley Speed 8 is my favorite

    but this is also kickass

  • I wish they put this car in GT5, so we could see the difference between a 7L V8 and a 5L inline-12.

  • I love the part from 0:46 to 0:52

  • Is that true that this car had more than 1300HP?¿

  • @Jonsaiyan22 Indeed. A powerslide on full opposite lock in pouring rain in a car as safe as a cheese... Jeez, that's brave

  • @Jonsaiyan22 I believe the cars with that sort of power were the later versions of the car. I think they were 917/30s, the open top versions. They had twin turbos. Whipping out around 250mph on the mulsanne. I could be wrong, and, due to the nature of people on youtube, i'm pretty sure that someone will correct me in an abusive manner if i am.

  • @Jonsaiyan22

im sure its 1200 BHP around that much but defo over a 1000+ bhp!!! It was unbeaten.

  • @Sophisco naturally aspirated 917s made around 580 horses.

  • @Bag0fRats Turbochraged - over 1500!!!

917k30 - the most powefull racecar ever driven on this planet.

  • @idupizdu think it was 1380 bhp or something like that.

  • @Bag0fRats From Wikipedia:

"...the turbocharged version Porsche 917/30 developed over 1,100 bhp (820 kW), and as much as 1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) in qualifying tune."

  • Song anyone?

  • nice vid

  • Oh my 1:20 to 1:25 that is car control, by god that is car control.

    Porsche is the best.

  • for a teen like me who was born too late, this is like a lost era for me..back when race cars were race cars

  • i watch this and i want to fire up Le Mans

  • Awesome tribute!! Thanks for putting this together for us to enjoy.

  • Awesome video. I have shown this to a ton of Porsche club members

  • that car is a legend in all sense ,not for nothing this car is very respect

  • Wow! Loved it.

  • I cant stop watching this video! It gives me goosebumps all over!

  • At 0:23 is clearly a 917!

  • lets see those NASCAR boys drive like this, bunch of red neck pussy's.

  • Fantastic! What else can you say? Drivers of these cars were seriously brave...

  • @HistoricCarArt in one video here the guys says on the straight in le mans the ass of car comes up...drivers could see sky in mirror WOOOAH

too bad walter röhrl was other decade than this car. would fit in there perfectly.röhrl and 917..the ultimate combi in my opinion :P

  • Terrific car.

    I love:

the oversteers from 0:47 to 0:52

the overtake from 1:20 to 1:24

    the lady at 1:43

  • Terrific car. I love it

  • @loverboy0008 is wrong, totaly wrong!

In another video, I have stressed the many differences between the 69' 917LH and the 908 coupe. Yes, they are similar but not the same, really.

  • @alefebvre i believe youre right. at least #12 does have 917 lights, not sure if 14 is or not.

  • @macmacma In 1969, the #12 and #14 Porsches were certainly 917's... At that point, there was not yet a distinction between the Kurzheck and the Longheck, so there's not really a point in calling it anything other than a Porsche 917. #12 was driven by Richard Attwood and Vic Elford. #14 was driven by Rolf Stommelen and Kurt Ahrens...

  • @BrunOhBEL aah, alrighty, thanks for the clarification!

  • The best car in the history !!!!

  • The most beautiful and deadliest car built. My "boys room" is a celebration of the 917 and 956 Rothmans Porsches. Stunning. Signed pictures and Steve McQueen Number 20 included.

  • an absolute beast !!

    a true legend

  • Standing beside a whole row of them in the Porsche Museum is something I will never forget, incredible car and Porsche is still making incredible cars perfection. The speed these thing ran 40 years ago were just breathtaking.

  • Thanks for that... it's like going to church.

  • I'd love to get behind the wheel of one of those. I'd shit my pants, but with a smile on my fuckin face!!

  • @UltimateWheelman look at 01:15 OMG!!!!

  • @wilhelmspw Yeah that must've been one NASTY crash!

  • @UltimateWheelman

    Bloody right,mate

  • @UltimateWheelman

Too right, mate you and me both!!

  • emocionante recuerdo!

  • haha poor Gt40 , getting a run for its money.

  • That car is a phucking monster. I saw one at an even here in SoCal and even the sound of it idling is badass.

  • Song anyone?

  • 917 beats anything!!!

  • awesome

  • If God were a car, he would be a 917.

This baby send the mighty GT40 into retirement.

  • Remember Pedro Rodriguez, the 917 KING !!!!!!

  • No doubt about... The Porsche 917 is the best, the greatest. And the pilots were all heros.

  • thanks for the great video, this is the car that hooked me on racing back in 1970. Wonderfull

  • old guard. freedom time

  • The Porsche 917 the vehicle that as a child prisoner of the goodolboy nascar dominated redneck south of the late 60s and early 70s facilitated my imaginary flight to place where daring , intelligence , and the ability to construct grammatically correct sentences where not mutually exclusive .

  • How in the world can this vid be called a Best-of of the 917 without a fantastic soundtrack of the engine??!!!

  • Ah yes,the steamroller from Zeufenhausen! I like the longhandler as well. Incredible acceleration for an N/A engine. I remember watchin the real race at LeMans in '70...wow,I wish I coulda drove that thing.

  • I fell in love with the 917 while watching the movie Le Mans in 1971.

  • 0:46 Epic!

  • arguably one of the best is chassis 016, pedro's car from '70. won Brands Hatch, Monza, and Watkens Glen. Still in original condition, it will be at Amelia Island, for the concours this march. message me if anyone wants pics or details on it. it was at monterey this past year. my favorite car of all time

  • ball- ripper of a car, nothing in the world like it

  • The Porsche 917 is one of my favorite cars. Know what's even better...the 917 is going to be in Gran Turismo 5! When I get the car, I'm going to spend hours racing in this car along with the Ford GT40, the Formula One cars, Peugeot 908, Audi R10 and every dream car out there.

  • @ffmotorsports51 - Is that confirmed, the 917 in GT5 ?? I bet, we'll have to drive our asses off, to win it !

  • @MegaLiopleurodon The car list for GT5 says that the Porsche 917 and some of its modified versions are going to be in the game, at least that's what I saw. They better put it in or else...

  • everything about this car makes me sooo want to see it in real life, racing at full speed. was to le mans in the 90s, but to see this just makes me want to be 30 years older :-)

  • god is a 917

  • porsche = ownage

  • You'd have to be a fool not to consider this one of the greatest race cars ever built. It transformed the world of racing and set higher standards for all.

  • This car and video are epic! Love the 917 in the Gulf color scheme.

  • fastest car to race in le mans

  • Greatest racing car ever, bar none.

  • 0:44 Fantastico!!!!

  • Pedro Rodriguez was awesome in the rain.

  • extraordinaire le mythe 917 et ses top pilotes elford larrousse stommelen rodriguez seppi siffert oliver magique et la musique ....top une autre avec le son de la bete serait top MERCI MERCI

  • Nicely done video!!!

  • Amo questa macchina !

  • Great control of the rain master ( at 0:46 ) Pedro Rodriguez. Photo al 1:18 Great Video!!!!!!

  • ballsy pass at 1:23

  • Best Racing car ever built IMHO, not only looked the business but held the record for top speed down the Mulsanne until the 962 hit 252 mph..... Porsche definitely knew how to build racers.

  • Hey guys, can someone tell me what race/event the Porsche was racing in at 0:54 - 0:55?

  • looks like sebring 12 hours, but I think I'm hugely mistakem

  • Daytona 24hours

  • no car will ever dominated the way the 917 did

the 917 is something ferrari and lambo lovers never like to discuss

  • Pedro Rodíguez, el Maestro del 917

  • Amen to that... the greatest..

  • Baddest of the bad: Porsche 917

  • Dude that porsche is the record holder of the le mans 24 heures.. THAT CAR IS LEGENDARY

  • Just returned from the Historics at Laguna Seca. Seemed like everywhere I turned, 917's, 908's 910's.. amazing chills - memories from Lemans to being there at Monterey in the very early 70's watching the Can Am series where Porsche debuted the 917-10 with Follmer and Haywood (if my memory serves me right) then with the 917-30 driven by the late Mark Donohue. After just 1 lap, cars coming through turn 8, there were the Porsches as if in there own race. Killed the Can Am series - what a shame.

  • EPIC

  • Jesus, the 917 was such a beauty. Even if it was mortal to drive one of these, it was worth it.

  • 1:20 - 1:25 , that was some dangerous move right here.

  • Yes, 15 years later Stefan Bellof did the same and died.

  • You cannot compare this with Bellof and Ickx because it was just a few seconds after the start, rather slow though. At the end Jo Siffert was in front and won the race. I saw this right from the stands next to Eau Rouge. I´ll never foreget.

  • Those two going side-by-side into Eau Rouge is one of the most brilliant and most insane things I have ever seen! Can you tell me what year that was and who the two drivers were? Was one of them Rodriguez? Do you have more video of that race?

  • Pedro and Jo stiffer in Spa 1000 Km 1970......GODS!!!!

  • nice job on yhe vid, what a car

  • truly awesome video

  • Nice to see the last shot was Jo Siffert and Brian Redman!

  • They were men with BALLS to drive cars like that on the edge maximum respesct but also what a fucking awesome car!!!

  • So true....Bell,Siffert, Attwood,Piper... sorry ALL BRITS

  • undoubtly the greatest most awesome competition car EVER built, I have loved sportscar racing for over 40 yrs and this is still the benchmark car for all others to be measured against. There has never been a car built since that comes anywhere near it - if God has a car it would be a 917.

  • Absolutely! This is THE racecar past and future. Because of all regulations these days no racecar will come near the 917 probably ever. For some tracks they uped the boost to over 1600 BHP. A fantastic beast of all time

  • The greatest race car ever!

  • oh so true!!

  • Well, at least the Fords weren't outlawed at Le Mans for being "too" fast.

  • Just think, If they updated the aero-package, and "tuned" the motor, it would stil be outlawed at Le Mans, almost 40 years later for being "too" fast.

  • I don't get it, just this car single handily was outlawed? I tried to google it but couldn't find specific information about it being banned.

  • Porsche stepped into racing with a 917 in 1969. Air-cooled flat-12 engine powered the 917 to 15 wins in world sports-car races from 1969 to 1971, after which it was outlawed by a rules change at Le Mans. The following year Porsche came back with a 16 cylinder 1100 bhp "turbo panzer" which was clocked at 221 MPH at Talledega with Mark Donohue driving in "1974". This was one bad ass car.

  • Well not quite. the 16 Cylinder was tested for Can Am, but the results werent as good as they hoped. They decided to use the 5.0 912.10 type motor, and twin turbo it. in 72 Penske created the 917/30 Can AM car, having now a 5.4 litre twin turbo motor which could be boosted as high as 1500 hp in qualifiying trim and 1100 in race trim. when the gas crunch came they saw it as an opportunity to ban that car by making fuel consumption limits. the 917/30 went to talladega and made the record run.

  • this viedo makes me cry

  • Fantastisch !!!!!

    Die Aufnahmen, die Musik...

    Die Autos, die Piloten,

    Einfach nur Fantastisch !!!!

    Nein...GÖTTLICH !!!!!!!!

  • I'm a fan of 917 k. i think that 917 is and will be the best race car. shame that the racing cars of today are not what this car had. Nowadays there is too much electronics, tcs, abs.

  • Not a shame I think nowadays tech. is good for the race world set new records and to help keep the fucking drivers a live.

  • Yes, I think you're right about that. the pilots of today are not as good.

  • Lol you can't say that because you don't know that there are plenty of good drivers.

  • When tearing around in my noisy, mid-engine supercharged NSX street car, i have the fantasy of racing at Le Mans, but eventually realize that it's a pathetic substitute for my childhood dream of being behind the wheel of a 917.

  • 0:47 - 0:49 --- outstanding car control !

  • I love the part where the 917 bullies the GT40.

  • probably thee most beautiful racing car, a shame modern racing cars aren't as unique!!

  • A really great video from an incredible car!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I am never failed to be moved by the energy and passion in honour of the 917 and their prodigious do-or-die drivers in this superb video. Economically these are hard times indeed, yet this vid pumps me up to such a state I forget the depressed state of affairs and my dreams are heroic and triumphant.

  • Goosebump alarm!

  • greatttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • SALUTE to the mighty Porsche

  • the LENGEND was BORN!

  • Nice video.

Was it "Quick Vic" Elford doing the 'monumental drift' in the wet 0:47 ? (Bet he was pleased that he collected that one! ;o)

  • This car is the greatest of all race cars, unfortunately the video, while fantastic, leaves out the most critical part of this car's legacy. This car would not be anywhere near what it was and is if not for the late Mark Donohue, winner of the 1972 Indy 500 and 917 driver and engineer. He drove and developed the Sunoco 917-30 into legend. Read his book, "The Unfair Advantage."

  • a truly spectacular car. and a really good video!

  • Beautifull video!! A car made for great drivers. Thanx

  • great vid, best car ever!!!

    best scene: 1:25 ... incredible

  • this vid is right up there with antti if not better! GREAT JOB!

  • Perfect Video. THX. My all-time-favorite race car. The Beauty to look at and the Beast to drive with or against. I grew up with this car without even knowing what it was able to do on track. Must have been 1971, when I, being 8 and my brother being 7, got 2 remote-controlled wire-connected 917s. Later we had one as a slot car. Like the Le Mans movie. Man, where is the time machine to get me back into such races as a 917-driver I want it - now !!!

  • That car def moves for it's technology level. Check out the 917 incar cam going around the De La Sarthe track.

  • that great race will never be the same without the 917

  • Inspiring video!

  • Superauto Supervideo 5/5 weiter so!^^

  • @ NickTheBubbl => no, it's not a 512M at 1:28, it's a 512S.

The 512M was first used at Zetwleg at the end of the 1970' season.

At 1:28, the action is at Monza in may 1970...

  • is that a 512m at 1:28?

  • best car ever. great video, thanks.

  • very nice video - very nice sound!

  • They were the Group B cars of closed circuits... The ultimate and most advanced response to those who said that Ford was invencible.

  • Goose bumps all over, 917 rules. Check out Vic Elford's Porsche High Performance Driving Handbook. It is worth owning.

  • The 917 and Ferrari P4 are amongst my top-ten childhood car-crazy memories. I have Vics book and I have driven a Porsche for 7 years, a great driver with excellent performance driving advice.

  • BRAVO..! BELLE VIDEO !

  • No live sound . Only muzak... :-(

  • For this montage/homage the music is perfect, and emotive. Blood guts, and sacrifice on the Championship glory trail in the legendary 917 can only be captured this way. Pathe news reel quality reportage is only good for a full length documentary feature.

  • thanks prost i forgot then 2 ohhh van lennep great driver

  • HOLEY SH- 1:21-1:25 is freaking nuts! they must have been doing at least 160 kph!

  • The overtake attempt at Eau Rouge was insane.

  • to jeanmouldi - definately!

I guess they were Siffert and Rodriguez involved in a family fight inside the Gulf/Wyer team. They were the top drivers in the team.

Tragically both of them perished a short time later.By the way,an identical insane attempt

was carried on by Bellof on Ickx exactly at the same section of the track. This time with a deadly endling.

  • Great video of the most legendary racecar ever.

The 917's just blew the competition out of the water when it came. Imagine watching these cars race in the early 70's.

Oh and that guy @2:00 is Ferry himself :)

  • never new they had that much hp, i was told 600hp. great era never to be relived again.

  • that gave me goosebumps

  • me too - born in 1971 I was definetly too young to see the 917 live in full racing action.

btw: does anyone know more about the music?

  • it's Immediate Music - Liberty Shield

I know it coz I've just made a video with it in background ;]

  • At 0,48 - great control (Rodriguez ?)

at 0.56 - good bye GT40 on Daytona bankings

at 1,25 - a family disagreement at Eau Rouge

Excellent job dedicated to one of the finest

and fastest racing sport cars ever.

    Thx.for sharing.

  • Excellent work. thanks

  • The best car of all times, theres no car that can match what the 917 did in its time. There are few cars now that can match the 917 performance figures, such a sad solution to alter the lemans rules so that it would stop participating and winning.

  • siffert ,rodriguez,kinnunen,redman,elford,piper,attwood,kauhsen,jÖst,larrousse,hobbs,heilwood,herrmann,lins,ahrens jr,steinemann,bell this are the 917 drivers

  • I think you forgot Donahue .

Mark Donahue died testing a 917/30 (the 1100 hp twin turbo flat 12 (Can-Am).

And they could turn it up to 1550 hp.

Anyway,I saw that Can-Am Porsche at Laguna Seca in 1973 or 4. What a memory.

    Thats All.
