In an interview Danny Carey said: I play 16th on the hihat and open it on every third stroke. I play it that way, it´s easier. but your´s sound very good too!
hey bro, your lessons are great. I used this one to cover Eulogy since it was the one part that was destroying me. Even the electronic percussion in the beginning wasn't as bad as this.
Hey, I really like the shuffle feel you put on this, but its not how Carey does it. He's says in an issue of Modern Drummer that its straight 16th's on the HH, opening on every third beat, starting with the first.
Both you and bikefreak have great feel though! Good job!
@bludshedd Thanks for letting me know that! By the way it sounds, it could be either way...this is the way I've always played it. Good thing is, if you can play it this way, you can play it the other way...and the end result is the same. Thanks for hollerin at me!
@DrummerEtc If I was going to be a stickler, I would point out that you're opening the HH on the second beat of the first measure and it gives it a different sound. But, I'm not a stickler ;).
@bludshedd So I went back and listened, and you're right.I totally goofed on this lesson. While the beat I showed is pretty cool,it's not the one he plays (EPIC FAIL).So now I have to re-shoot this lesson. Thanks for pointing it out, seriously.I don't listen to a ton of TOOL,I got a request for this one,I had learned it a long time ago,& instead of taking 10 seconds & listening back to make sure I was right, I just went with it. Bad mistake...and you are a stickler, which is what makes you cool ;^)
Stephen, I thought Danny played constant 16ths on the hats? I've been trying this groove for a while.. the hands are really easy once you get the hang of it.. it's the bassdrum that throws me off.

Glad to see I'm not crazy. I posted a video of how to play this awhile ago (though you play it a lot cleaner in this video than I did back when I posted mine) and I got continuously flamed because "Danny doesn't used a broken up sticking on the hi-hat, he does continuous 16ths." You've not only played it the same way, but you've explained better than I did as well. Subscribed man, have a good one
@bikefreak77 Lol, no you're not crazy brotha! Thanks for the compliments...it means alot coming from other peeps that teach as well. Thanks for the sub...new lessons go up every Monday and Thursday.
Hey, Great job! I'm not a metal drummer, but I work on new stuff all the time. It took me a little while but I got it today! than I turned it in to a funk groove. Thank you very much!
@floorted This is something that I ripped from Danny Carey years ago...I've used it in TONS of pop and funk setting...as well as some jazz type settings. It's really a versatile ostinato...stoked that you kicked it around long enough to master it! That's awesome man!
I read the comments below... sorry, my comment is redundant. ;-) I learn a lot from your vids, thanks for sharing!

@rockdahaus Yea, I've actually never seen him play it or seen that interview...but that makes sense. Glad you dig the vids!
