The notion that chocolate will hurt a dog is nothing but an urban legend. I've seen firsthand dogs get into and eat pounds of chocolate, dark chocolate at that, and suffer no ill effects whatsoever. It's just a myth that it can somehow hurt them.

I wouldn't call it a myth just based on a few cases. My dog got into some chocolate and got very sick. Just like in humans, reactions to various substances varies from individual to individual.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs because they metabolize the toxin (theobromine) in it much slower than humans do. Granted, it takes a lot of the stuff to actually cause poisoning, but it is very bad for them regardless and potentially can cause serious problems.
