There was a guy who told me the Tea Party is racist. I told him that chanting an accusation over and over doesn't make it true, but that Goebbels would be proud. He invoked Godwin, but I told him that my comparison was sound, and quite appropriate: Goebbels (Hitler's minister of propaganda) said "If you repeat the big lie often enough, it eventually becomes the truth." So yes, comparisons to Nazis CAN be valid...if you base them on actual actions and not just a desire to deliver a cheap shot
Very true Sam, but can this nazi comparison be part of a legitimately good argument? I'm assuming that all three elements of logos, pathos and ethos are utilised in the nazi comparison argument.
@rippeddude96 As with any scientific law, there are a few expections, yes. However, the appropriate use of a Nazi comparison has everything to do with the context of the argument. I believe a comparison such as that would be appropriate in, let's say, an argument about eugenics or 20th century dictatorships.
So is a Hitler/nazi argument never viable? Is comparing the Nazis to the new Arizona state law, when it is the most well known example of fascism While Italy and Mussolini might have worked as well, comparing it to the Nazi regime makes more sense, seeing as they are more known for they prosecutions of 'different' people than Mussolini ever was. What do you say monker59?
GAH! That is SO annoying! I hate when I'm having an intelligent conversation and someone brings up Nazi Germany when it's not even remotely relevant! To be fair, though, if you're talking about dictatorship or mob mentality, a comparison WOULD be admissible.
you SO win for this! in fact, you've inspired today's post on my new blog (the URL can be found in the "bulletin" on my profile page. i've added a link to this video. thanks! enjoy!

this is the type of video a nazi would do....i kid i kid.
didnt know there was a name for that, yes no matter what the argument is at some point someone will bring up hitler or a nazi comparison.
If they dont use that as a comparison then the argument will branch out to either religion or race.
really, it happeneds all the time, no matter what the topic is about.
