Spartans where formation fighters. The Samurais where not. Even on mass there where more 1vs1 than formation vs formation battles in Japan.

The Vikings where formation fighters, but I dont think a shield wall with long axes would have the same range as the spears the Spartans used. That said, the Vikings where also individual fighters and had better armor with "state of the art" chain mail so 1vs1 I think the Viking would have beaten the Spartan soldier.

You should know that Sparta declared few wars & the Spartan army had as primary concern the defense against the helots.

Errrh, nope.

The 300 Spartans, plus a force of around 4000-7000 greeks, held the pass for a few days actually. Once the Spartans caught word that the Persians had found the path around the path, the 300 Spartans sent the greeks home and held the pass themselves to uphold Spartan tradition and usher in a sense of greek pride that helped the rest of Greece drive the persians back. Some Greeks did stay refuse to be dismissed, but not many.
