how much boost/hp can these old 5.7's handle? i wanna get an iroc and turbo/megasquirt it... sounds like tons of fun lol. i'm lookin to buy an iroc but all the stupid NJ folks around here are retarded. one dude wanted $8000 for his STOCK and BEAT UP Iroc!!! lol
@Munky332 nice haha.. this car I paid $700 for as it looked in this video, except for the turbo and supporting mods. I have about $15k in the car now though with the new engine, paint, etc. I ran as much as 16 psi on the stock engine and it started running hot afterwards. After a new engine build it STILL ran hot! Ended up being an unreliable relay on fan #2! I put 10k miles on this engine with 10-13 psi and nothing was found wrong with it when I took it apart.
@zz3astro nice. i wish i could get a Z28/iroc for that cheap. everyone wants top dollar in NJ for their GARBAGE... i have an '03 mustang that's turbo'd, just rebuild the motor after throwing 2 rods out the side makin 420+ rwhp, just waiting for a tune... wanna megasquirt that too, but i'd rather start with an older iroc b/c i love the bodystyle. i dont know much about the chevy motors, more of a ford guy engine wise, but i love the 3rd gen camaro body.
@Munky332 If you plan to turbo and end up with a tpi car, don't let the typical 'tpi sucks' rumors discourage you. Forced induction + TPI is a great combo as long as you stay with smaller heads and camshaft. A completely stock tpi system works fine. My friend runs 6.50's in the 1/8 (and that's with a 2.52 rear and a 2.0 60 foot - 89 vette so he's being easy on the launch) with a completely stock tpi system on a 383 + single turbo. I'm running 7.71 now on Firestone radials.
@RIEKSONE Yes and actually I was wrong about it being a 383. It is actually only a 355! Basically he fabricated headers to a single turbo (I want to say 76mm, could be a 72 though). Has single Walbro 255, precision turbo 65 lb injectors, world product heads, stock tpi intake, Big Stuff 3 ecm, 700r4, cheap B&M stall around 2500, 2.52 rear. Dynoed close to 600 rwhp, over 600 ft lbs and ran 112 mph in the 1/8. Stock fuel system and intake other than the mods above.
@zz3astro Everything you said i believed till you said 600HP and 112 in the 1/8th. So does that mean you run 200 in the 1/4? any Dyno vids or 1/8 runs???
@Etnricer Wasn't talking about my car for 600 & 112 mph. That was my friend's 89 corvette with a single turbo TPI so I don't have any vids. To answer your question though, 112 in the 1/8 is good for about 10.0 @ 138 mph in the 1/4. He's putting that car back together this winter so I'll have some vids of it in the spring.
@Etnricer It wasn't my car I was talking about. It was my friend's 89 TPI corvette with a single 72 (or 76mm) turbo. To answer your question though, 112 mph in the 1/8 works out to about 10.0 @ 138 mph in the 1/4. He's putting the car back together this winter so I hope to have some vids of it in the spring.
@bbabb2010 There's way too much to explain in this space, but basically you need something to control your fuel and spark during boost conditions. For fuel, this could be anything from an FMU (cheap) to a completely different computer system. For spark control (you need less spark as boost increases) you could use something like an MSD 6 BTM (cheap) to a different computer. FMU could theoretically work with stock injectors up to a certain amount of boost.... continued..
@bbabb2010 ...continued... otherwise you'll need larger injectors and over 7-8 psi of boost a better fuel pump. The list goes on, but those are the basics.
@ImDriftey In the configuration the car was in at the time of this video, I had about $2000 in the turbo system and supporting mods (megasquirt & injectors). A lot more in it now that I've built a new engine though!
Great job! and thanks for posting your link info on how the job was done! saved to my favs, I ever come across a set up, I would love to do mine too. great vid! and great to see one done well!
@ferline69 The visible gauge is a PLX DM200. They also have the same display in the smaller DM100 model. They will display up to four sensors at once. I've got the SM-AFR for air fuel, SM-Boost/Vac for boost and will be adding the SM-Fluid Pressure to monitor fuel pressure. Pretty nice way to keep a stock looking interior but still have plenty of info available. If you have an OBD2 vehicle, they have one that scans all of the parameters plus works with the sensors I have.
@zz3astro What's the difference between TPI and TBI? I'm not too sure. I know someone who is selling me a 91 TPI v8 5.7 engine. And it's for $2500, and idk if I should buy it cuz I want something that is pure raw and mean. Is it better than TBI? And I'm sure I'll be putting a flowmaster and other things in it to make it better.
@fyflishfy $2500 is way wayyy too much for an old TPI engine. If you want to spend that kind of money, I would recommend looking for an LS1 or 5.3/6.0 LQ engine. It's a more complicated swap but if you're looking for a big power upgrade, that's the direction you want to go. There is not enough of an advantage going from TBI to TPI except the TPI looks nice and builds more torque. You should be able to get a complete running TPI engine for $400-$800 with harness & computer.
@zz3astro Oh dang. Well, see I ALWAYS wanted to have a muscle car. Should I get an old shell of a camaro (My favorite type of car), and put the engine/tranny/interior/paint it myself type of thing? Or should I get a camaro that has a 3.8L v6 engine, drop that out, and just upgrade it to the 5.7 TPI? Or is LS1/5.3/6.0 LQ better? I am also kinda budgeting too, I make like 850-950 a month, and half of that goes to bills. So what's the best bet for me?
@nomad6485 Blue and silver TA.. that sounds familiar. Seems like I saw one about two weeks ago on Tyndall Parkway. I live over near the mall and I'm all over town in the Iroc. I drive it several times a week. I remember an all original TA that a guy from Tyndall had a couple of years back but can't remember the color or exact year.
@zz3astro IT may have been me, i dunno. I wanna go check that bad boy out sometime. Maybe you can give me some ideas on what to do with my TA. Its still Factory Original with the 5.7 TPI. I have no idea what i should do with it.. Keep the motor or swap it out for something bigger?. I dont wanna molest it too much cuz i diddnt buy it. Family heirloom that my dad got off the showroom floor back in 87.
@nomad6485 Yep sounds like you're the one I talked to at the car show at Spinnaker some years ago. I'll probably be at the HBO storage cruise in this saturday (18th) from 6-8pm. You should bring yours out and show it. As for modding yours, I guess it depends on how much faster you want it, but I'd be tempted to leave it as is because it's so original and clean. Turbocharging is always an option and it will still sound and drive like stock. I'll have to bring you for a ride in mine.
@DDPBOYDE3 It's an Ebay T70 which has a 60.5mm inducer. Exhaust housing is .96 A/R. When I build my engine I will be going to something between 67mm and 72mm from Precision Turbo (size depending on clearance to hood and valve cover)

@julioari If you are talking about an Ebay turbo kit, there are some good parts and some not so good in those kits. For example, most of the time the oil feed and return lines are junk. By the time you throw away the parts you cannot use and order the ones worth using, you might as well piece it together yourself. Also keep in mind that none of the ebay turbo kits are 'bolt on' or even close in the case of an Iroc. Might as well make your own manifolds out of stock ones.
@zz3astro so... How can Chinese sweat shops fuck up a pressure hose compared to a turbo or blow off valve that has moving parts? same with their manifolds that have shitty welds done by a 7 year old with down syndrome.
