Man you are real smart for having documented these solos over all of the years. You are an extremely fluid drummer. You get around the kit with nice precision. Your solos are all very well put to gether which in itself is difficult. Very nice execution. Liked the snare stuff around the middle of the vid. Enjoyed it all...Nick
@readyeddy101 The one I was real glad I caught, was the very first one, when I was about 16, and still had hair, and was thin! The rest were from over time. This video is a bit tough to watch for the outsider because it's long, and kinda boring. But I did it to document myself over time, (and so that I could finally throw away all those old VHS tapes!) Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I was fortunate that our family got one of the first available home video cameras right after they came out. Huge and expensive by today's standards, but it did the trick. I found that videoing yourself was a great practice tool for shoring up weaknesses, etc. But I ended up with 5 full VHS tapes! So this was a good way to preserve some of that, AND still clean out the clutter! Plus, I don't think it's been done before on YouTube. Editing it all down WAS a major project, though. Phew!
Gosh Very amazing speed and precision Dave.I can say your faster than Neil Peart here.Your like a Speed machine like a Tommy Gun bro..I miss the goatee.lol
Thanks, Darrell. Yeah, it's old material. Kind of like when TV shows go on strike and they string together a bunch of old stuff to make it look like a new episode! Actually, alot of work when into this one. I had to go through hours and hours of videotapes and document the different eras. Then try to match up a snare ending segment with snare beginning segment etc to keep the continuity. Frankly, it was a pain in the ass, but at least now I can dump all those old tapes that take up so much room!
hey Dave, i just wanted to say i just watched this for the fourth time! it's great. how many years does it span? you look very relaxed throughout too. your cymbals sound perfect, and i really like your main snare sound too.
It spans 35 years. I was about 15 years old in the first segment, and I added on a modern ending. The time period is from the early 70's on. To follow the progression through time, just follow the hair loss! Most of it was done in the 80's and early 90's. The snare throughout was the original Fibes snare. And the cymbals were always Paiste. I really just did it so I could get rid of all those old VHS cassettes! But I do recommend that others keep a video record of their progress. Thanks, Mike.
cool solos cross sticking n everything! the rototoms ! it looks like VERY custom! keep at it! love what you do ,do what you love! peace from montreal(home of the drumfest... check my vids(2) !!!!
This whole montage idea was really cool. Also after seeing your training videos I'm tempted to add my Pearl competitor marching snare to my set, seems like an innovative idea.
Thanks! Rather than just toss away all those old tapes, I picked a few solos representative of different eras in my development, and that also covered different areas of playing, and strung them together. The tough part was trying to match the solos up so it flowed from snare ending to snare beginning, etc. I think the marching snare really tightens up the whole sound of the kit as well. But I had to put legs on mine. Good luck!
I tried all kinds of snare and drum stands, but couldn't get it as low as I needed it to be. So I bought some FIBES hardware, (to match my other drums), drilled some holes in it and mounted 3 legs on it, so it looks like a floor tom!
FIBES. They were the DW's of the 70's. Now they're classics. The name stands for fiberglass (shells). Mine have a brushed antique copper finish. A few are custom sized. I also have a classic fiberglass-shell, mirror chromed, small Pearl jazz set, and a Roland V-Drum set. I'll be posting 1st-time solos on them next summer.
Thanks again! I just checked out all of your videos, and I can see improvement in your solos even from May, just 6 months ago! Keep at it. It's working! (Where's solo #2)?
Great vid!
Keep it up!

yea the marching snare is signifigantly higher than the regular snare, any tips for modifying it to make it sit lower?
