  • Absolutely love The Happy Goodmans!!! I love Vestal even more!!!! Truely blessed to hear and see them perform...I pray that Vestal and Howard are there at the Eastern Gate to greet me...all the glory to Jesus...............Vestal and Dottie are singing right now, bringing JOY to all in Heaven!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • There will never be another group like them.

  • Haven't heard this song in a long long time. I love it.

  • Oh but then, with joy, will we see Jesus, just INSIDE THE EASTERN GATE!!!

  • Is that Aaron Wilburn standing beside Rusty? If not, who is it?

  • They will never be replaced....EVER!!!!!

  • What a fine video. It shows the Goodmans and Johnny Cook at their best, in my opinion. What wonderful people these were.

  • This brings me back to my childhood... I remember meeting them when I was a kid at singings... and that was always a treat to be able to hear them... I am thankful for my upbringing...

  • Oh! YEAH.

  • great family!!! awesome!!! the elders bringing the youngens into the ministy of song. hallelujah!!! when Jesus returns He will enter this gate that has been closed for a very long time. and His children will meet their. praise God for Happy, Vestal and the family.

  • Johnny Cook is in top form vocally and had a FANTASTIC tenor voice. Then Vestal begins to sing and she is also in top form and equally fantastic. She is my all-time favorite singer, and her sincerity radiates in this wonderful song. This is absolutely one of the best things on You Tube. I can't thank hoover 4000 enough for posting this.

  • God Bless you so much for posting this. I've been going through a very tough time in my life right now and as I play this over and over and shed tears I feel like I've been to the altar and been spiritually healed and revived.

  • oops! performing !!*

  • Thank you again for posting this ...... one of the greatest perforoming groups. No one could do this better than Vestal ~ this version really touches my soul. TY! =)

  • Absolutely love it!!!!

  • Three people won't meet us inside the Eastern Gate....

  • How beautiful! That is the way it is meant to sound....thanks for sharing this.

  • I meet the Happy Goodman Family many times over the years when I was growing up They came to churches all around us every year and when word got out they was coming that church would be a packed house. I never seen anything like them since in Gospel Music. They was the Greatest, I miss they all very much. Thanks to all who post their songs and video's God Bless You

  • You can see the light of Jesus in Vestal's face at about 2:12 when she sings, "Oh, but then, with joy, we will see Jesus, just inside the Eastern Gate." Makes me cry!

  • I love this song but am confused. The song written by Albert Brumley is called "I'll Meet You In the Morning".... and this song Eastern Gate sounds very much the same. Some of the lyrics are the same. So what gives.

  • @zuttorizzo

As you say, I'll Meet You in the Morning was written by Albert E. Brumley. The Eastern Gate was written by Isaiah G. Martin. They have some similar words, but are two different songs. Hope this clears your confusion. God Bless.

  • for patricia is she listenning

  • my grandmother died last year june 26th 2009 and she had this played at her service my grandfather had the same song played he died the year before I was born 1975.She never remarried or even went on a date ...she was 97 years old when she died, now that is a mighty love it even survived death. RIP grandma

  • I CAN't WAIT TO FINALLY MEET THE HAPPY GOODMAN'S ND JOHNNY COOK AT THE EASTERN GATE..Judy Davidson

  • Vestal Goodman was such an amazing southern gospel singer. She had the perfect pitch and presense which made her popular on the gospel music circuit. Johnny Cook had a truly powerful tenor voice range. They held to the traditional camp meeting songbook which made them popular among their many fans. Thanks for posting this vid of them all!

  • Takes ya back, don't it?

  • Thanks hoover as always!!! This is beautiful!!

  • God bless Vestals heart. God rest her soul. But don't you just love her hair in the video?

  • I don't know how much times this can be said but there was just something special about Vestal...don't get me wrong, all of the singers in the group were amazing, and Johnny Cook was an exceptional tenor with amazing range, but Vestal, boy she was truly something special!!!

  • goood sing itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt amennnnnnnnnnnnn

  • I remember the Goodmans closing their concert at Louisville's Memorial Auditoreum with this song this same year. I was 10 years old and my Mother took me to see them. It was the first live concert I ever saw and I remember it to this day. There will never be gospel groups like the Happy Goodmans again....especially Sister Vestal Goodman!

  • thank you, listen Bleckwood Brothers

  • oh,oh oh,de szep de a Blackwwood Brothers is erdemes meghallgatni

  • Please join with me in praying for the ones who dont believe in Jesus.

  • I will try

  • What about the American Indians? They knew not of Jesus and were massacred by thise proclaiming his name. Now before you call me a heathen, you ought to know I am a born again independent fundamenatlist baptist, but still one must recognise the disparity in organised religion, pentacostalists included.

  • I guess what I mean to say is, God gives people a certain belief according to their own understanding; Different cultures understand the creator in accordance to their own. We have no right to shove our version of christianity down anybody else's throat than they do to us. The difference is: they understand this and you don't. If the scripture says he came to them and they rejected him, so be it. You cannot pray for them.

  • @ValerieBarlow First off, God doesn't give anybody a certain belief, you are free to believe whatever you want to believe. Secondly, as Christians, we have a mandate as set out in the Bible to go ye out into all the world and preach the gospel. I don't know what that means to you, but to me that is a command from God. Now, I understand that the "in-you-face", "down-your-throat" approach is not always appreciated. But to say we have no right is wrong, because we do. If they accept or not, fine.

  • I'm so glad this song is on here! I love the Goodman's and I'm also glad I can find all these gospel greats on youtube.

  • At 1:40 its a very young David Miscavige

  • 1:40...sounds like one of the Osbourne brothers...

    Very good harmony...

  • No, that's Johnny Cook.

  • He DOES sound like a woman singing tho, ye caint deny it.

  • At point 1:40 it is actually Johnny Cook singing.

  • Yes it is eerie; who copied who?

  • I am so happy that we have these videos on youtube, especially the older ones. What a blessing to be able top hear the Happy Goodmans and other Southern Gospel groups who have gone to be with Jesus. What a reunion we will have when we go to join them around the throne! I hope Jesus comes for us soon! What a glorious day that will be!

  • Oh how I agree, what a day that will be. And I believe that want be long. I'm 45 and sure would like to live the rest of my life here but I'd take being in heaven anyday with my saviour.

  • Probably the best gospel group ever.

  • I miss the Goodmans so much! They were the BEST.

  • Johnny Cook kind of looks like Chekhov from Star Trek.

  • What precious memories!! I remember this

song growing up when I was just a kid.

I've been in church choirs since I was 10.

Now I'm 48 and still sing in a church choir.

The eastern gate was the first one I learned

growing up. The songs out today don't hold

a candle to these oldies but goldies.

    methodistgirl

  • Oh the memories! I remember singing that

song when I was growing up as a kid. Now

I still sing in the church choir with songs that

are sung today. These modern gospel songs

don't hold a candle to this golden oldie. I'm

very touched by this video. God Bless!

    methodistgirl

  • Cant beat it!

  • Did Howard and Vestal's daughter Vicki, ever sing with the group? and is any of these girls her ?

  • Yes Vicki is the one with the long dark hair.I know Vestal sister Millie and she has a picture of Vicki...she is a beautiful woman

    brosongbird7

  • both girls have long hair, is it the one standing next to Vestal?

  • That isn't Vicki. That is a girl from the group Voices Triumphant. Her last name is Tole.

  • One of the best decisions that the legendary Southern gospel group, "The

Happy Goodmans' did was to induct the late great king of Tenor's Johnny Cook!

Only Heaven itself has a better Tenor....We miss all these great gospel

music pioneers that have gone on to be

with the Lord that they faithfully served !!

  • Thank you some of them are with Jesus right now in heaven thanks and God bless

  • goosebumps

  • Hoover I am so very grateful that you post these videos. They are such a godsend and a blessing. I thank God that you take your time to do this work. I am ill and don't get to go to church so it really means a lot to me to be able to hear the word of God in song. Thank You.

  • This is the Best of the Goodmans ..except for the bounce between Johnny Cook and Vestal..

  • I LOVE these old videos of so long ago! Wonderful. Thank you so much hoover4000 for posting these! What a blessing!

  • love this song! Thanks for posting.

  • this songs reminds me of my mother; taking us to church every sunday. Making sure we got a good start in church. She's gone on to receive her reward, but the day is coming I'll be meet her at the eastern gate.

  • AWESOME!

  • Johnny truly was one of the best. His voice blesses me and he sings with such conviction, as does Vestal and the rest of the Goodman's. What are the Goodman children doing these days? Are they in the ministry?

  • fabulous! Johnny and Vestal are now singing those beautifil high notes in the presence of Jesus. Wish I could have seen them in person. These videos are such a blessing. They helped to bring me out of mormonism for which I will forever be grateful. Please world know that mormonism is truly a cult! That you Hoover for sharing the truth.

  • Bless your heart! Hallelujah for a delievering Jesus. I have and have had former Mormons in my church as well. If only people knew the truth about that mess, they would RUN from it as fast as they could. I'm so glad you have been redeemed!

  • Why did my comments get thumbs down? I was just saying that stage performers usually wear stage makeup so their faces aren't washed out by the lights.

The reason that I posted two comments is that my first comment didn't show up originally, so I thought it hadn't been posted.

  • I noticed that the ladies are not wearing any makeup. This is no longer the way it is in the churches today. What has caused the change?

  • I think they realized that it wasn't what was on the outside that made them holy, but what was in their heart and soul. I know that was how it came about in the churches I went to.

God looks on our heart and spirit, not our outward appearance. berni-sing

  • If that were the truth then it would be that we all have become more enlightened to the truths of the bible then our forefathers were.

  • berni,the heart is"desperately wicked"..

God was the first tailor,He made clothes for Adam and Eve.He gave us instructions throughout the bible on how we should live, walk and talk and present ourselves.... "like wearing modest apparel".. I cannot believe some of the things women wear to church.. no respect, no shame.

    1 Timothy 2:9

    In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel,with shamefacedness and sobriety;not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls,or costly array;

  • Actually, the men and the women are probably all wearing makeup (stage makeup). Otherwise, their faces would be washed out by the bright lights.

  • Actually, they're probably all wearing stage makeup (the men, too). If they weren't, the lights would make their faces look washed out.

  • Sorry for the double post. YouTube didn't show either comment for a couple weeks.

  • it's my fault they didn't show up for a couple of weeks. I am getting more and more comments a day and since I approve them first sometimes it takes a while for me to get to all of them

  • lovers of the world more than lovers of God?

    pride?

  • Simply the greatest .......

  • Ezekiel 44:1-3

  • Another great one thank you hoover4000

  • Did "CAT" Freeman sing with any quartets? I would loved to haven heard him. But then that must have been back in the early days, Please tell us when he was singing. Is he on any of the Goodman's albums? Berni

  • I love to look at the joy on Vestal's face when she sings - seems as though it ALWAYS comes straight from her heart and displayed all over her face. Miss ya Vestal!

  • I hope Monica Stump in Tenn. Who went to church w/ some of this Goodman Family gets to see these wonderful videos...God Bless All...

  • Wonderful and gracious. I miss watching Vestal. She will always be missed. Maybe I will see her again soon. This is one of my favorite performances of all this group.

  • Signature song for the Goodmans. Johnny Cook is singing on this video. Johnny was my personal friend. He is the highest, clearest tenor you'll ever hear. Rusty snatched him away from Joel Kelsey and the Songmasters down in Milan, TN when Vestal was recovering from heart surgery. He sounded so much like Vestal that many people could not, and still cannot, distinguish the difference. He recorded her part on the "Legendary" album.

  • "Cat" Freeman was the brother of Vestal, he and Howard

sang on the radio in Birmingham for the late Bro. Douoglas, Howard and "Cat" were in charge of the music. I can remember as a young child listening to them along with my Mother. "Cat" took Howard home with him to

visit his family the Freemans, that is how he met Vestal. Thanks Hoover for the wonderful music.

  • Johnny Cook did have one of the widest ranged tennor voices ever, always sharp and crystal clear and his range was actually higher than Vestal's...course there was another great gospel tennor who was very close to Vestal, the late "Cat" Stephens...her brother

  • I can't believe how much Johnny Cook sounds like Vestal! I thought it was some kind of lip synching to Vestal's voice... well, know I don't know who's singing on the recordings, him or her!

  • why did such an incredible voice as Johnny Cook's basically vanish after the Happy Goodmans? It is suspicious.

  • Who is the young man singing the first verse? Is that Sam Goodman?

  • no it's howard goodman

  • @hoover4000 Actually, I think the reference is to Johnny Cook's verse.

  • @hoover4000 it's Johnny Cook singing the 2nd verse solo, then Vestal comes in on the third verse. Howard is singing the lead with all of them on the first verse....

  • Howard is singing the lead on the first verse where the entire family sings in harmony; the young man that is "featured" on the solo verse is Johnny Cook - one of the greatest tenors ever to step up to the mic. Don't think we'll ever see a family group in southern gospel that can even come close to the Goodmans. They had a unique, one-of-a-kind sound that will never be duplicated in my opinion.

  • @jimka2001 the young one is Johnny Cook wavy gray hair is Howard goodman

  • @packingten That is true.

  • Who are the 3 kids in the middle? This is a Great Video, Thanks for posting.

  • hoover...I just want to thank you so much for the videos that you have posted. It seems like every time I am just not having a good day- I come across one and songs like this just sing me happy! haha. I would love to have one of those suits that those guys are wearing

  • I still miss her

  • I wish I had one of tose jackets, they are back in style now.

  • actually Aaron is on far right with Rusty.Sam is on far left with Johnny

  • oh yeah, when they said blonde hair i assumed they meant him

  • And by the way hoover, you are a fantastic ,awesome woman for all you do finding all these great things,THANKS !!

  • aww thank you :)

  • Who are the 3 Kids in the middle? Thanks

  • "the voices triumphant"

  • Is Aaron Wilburn the short, blond-haired guy all the way over on the right, sharing a microphone with Sam Goodman?

  • I love this song and I love the suits :D

  • Vestal sings with great passion. It looks so easy. No other voice is quite like hers except Johnny Cook.

  • WOW, What a performance!!! Who is the kid that sounds JUST LIKE VESTAL!!!! That kid is dead on!!!

  • Johnny Cook

  • I've been to the Eastern Gate in Jerusalem. It is moving experience to know Jesus Christ is coming back to the Mount of Olives and we will be going through the Eastern Gate with our LORD Jesus Christ.

  • I've been to the Eastern Gate in Jerusalem. It is moving experience to know Jesus Christ is coming back to the Mount of Olives and we will be going through the Eastern Gate with our LORD Jesus Christ.

  • I wish there were more with Rusty singing lead

  • Aaron Wilburn is the one singing beside Rusty.

  • they was so young and loving god

thank god for people that loved to sing this song with the deep love of god in them and it shows too

  • Thanks for posting the videos. Love, love, love the Happy Goodmans.

  • THE HAIR.. LOVE IT

  • I love the Happy Goodmans. They used to come to our church frequently in New Orleans and now I miss them so much. It is such a blessing to see these videos. Thanks Hoover

  • i wished i had this and other videos of this wonderful family.

tell me more and where i can find it.

    thanks

  • thank you hoover4000, I just lost my right leg and these songs of the woman I dearly loved is a great way to feel so much better.

thank you so much and hope we can hear more.

the best way to feeling better is through GOD and his people sing of him.

    thanks over and over,denise

  • God bless you Denise. You must have had a rough time. Play this kind of music over and over again. I'm so glad I can find songs and music like this here. Nothing else can touch me and bring his presence and move me so deeply like this kind of worship. Be encouraged. "God Will Take Care of You."

  • where's aaron wilburn in this video and what's he doing? I couldn't recognize him...

  • he's the skinny kid standing next to rusty goodman in the black suit

  • calico star have you ever noticed the beautiful look on Vestal's face when singing?

  • That beautiful look was so special. It was from a time when the glory of the Lord shone upon peoples faces that were filled with his Spirit. Strange how you don't see that look so much anymore on the face of those who say they know Him. This was a beautiful time.

She would get happy during a concert sometimes and just start speaking in tongues when she couldn't control it anymore. And she just didn't care much what anybody thought about it. What a great blessing she was.

  • Wasn't there a "Story Song" with these singers about a couple of women on an airplane, and one witnessed to the other?

  • I would really love to see more videos of vestal and the happy goodmans from those early years. Im pretty young but watching these thrill my heart and motivates me. please post more, preferably from those longer years

  • put more of the Goodmans on in the early years they are a blessing

  • OH THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!

Where can I get this video? do you have a tape?

  • Love how Vestal, near the end of the song takes Howard's hand

  • I remember going to see the Goodmans and Johnny Cook in Fort Worth-just as good now as back then

  • I first saw them on the old Tennessee Ernie show and have loved them ever since. Thanks for giving it to us all.

  • Where on Earth did you get this? It is amazing.

  • Vestal is awesome Ive become a very big fan could you add some more newer and older videos I look forward to listening to so gs you have posted

  • During the Homecoming when everyone sung together, did Howard sing as an alto or a bass? I've always wondered if he did the occasional quartette number with other homecoming singers.

  • Howard was a baritone which falls between Tenor and Bass

  • Holy ?Cow....is that all her hair? LOL...what a wonderful look at the family from way back then..thank you Hoover,,this was a wonderful video..

  • Isn't it amazing that even the Assemblies of God practice holiness back in the mid 1900's? Standards left that organization in the 1980's and if you'll look at some other Pentecostal organizations (I.E Apostolics, UPCI) you'll find the same thing happening today. Here's a question, have you ever seen a sign for the woman's restroom where the stick-woman was wearing pants?

  • having the stick figure on the ladies sign wear a dress makes it easier to tell the ladies and men's signs apart thats pretty much as deep as it goes

  • My daugher and I was at a drive thru, and she ask if it was a man or a women at the window.

  • Beautiful song.

    Thank you very much.

    Walter

  • love it((smiles))
