Great match up. I remember Fisher when he wrestled for Flint Northern highschool. He was an exciting wrestler then. Its a shame he never made the big dance (Olympics). Great Kid
I think this was just an amazing match. I don't care who you like better, these are two positively tremendous athletes, and they were both very close to victory. I don't think anyone here can argue with either wrestler's skill.
Heartbreaking to have 2 tremendous athletes trying to make that one slot for Olympics, Obviously, that was the gold medal match as Smiths Olympic matches were EASY compared to wrestling Fischer. I've watched Fischer all the way back to when he was a frosh at Michigan, he always was a world class standout.
Going to have to agree with gunther101 on this one. I am African-American also and I don't believe that anything to do with it. I could see the fact that he is a 5-timer doing more for him than a race issue in this match. It was a close match and as my coaches always said and still say to me, "Don't leave the match in the refs hands". I like John Fisher but he did give up a point on dragging himself out of bounds and then the point was awarded to Smith. That could have went differently.
would have liked to see fisher go. that call at 5:03 dictated how fisher had to wrestle the rest of the match. but calls like that roll at 7:20 and questionable 4:12 out of bounds on the deep single show me that this is more a case of poor refs.
I'm sure Smith feels guilty over that match. I think at the time John Smith was bringing lots of exposure to the sport. His status helped him with this match.
Holy crap, John Fisher won this match. No way that was a takedown for Smith at 5:03. Fisher had his Smith's leg and body blocked. Even the announcer exclaimed, "Oh no!" You heard the crowd. They wanted the "ALL-AMERICAN WHITE BOY" and not the Black guy to represent America on that gold medal stand.
So you're saying that the refs and fans are racist and called the match the way they did because Fisher is black. Any proof there buddy? Oh wait, you don't have any because thats not what happened. You weren't there, haven't done crap in wrestling, and are a complete fucking moron. America has had plenty of black wrestlers PROUDLY represent America on the gold medal stand, you fucking idiot.
Actually...wait for it...No, I'm not white. I simply do not feel the need to claim discrimination when there is none. In American wrestling we have great ambassadors of the sport like Kenny Monday and Bobby Douglas, both of whom happen to be black and very respected for what they have contributed to the sport. Please, stop hating others and learn to appreciate PEOPLE for who they are, not just their race or ethnic background.
You guys can say bad calls all day long, in the end you can't leave it up to the refs. Smith matches up badly to Fisher by style, and still won. Smith actually teched him in the Pan Am games one year before also.
There's NO WAY you can give smith the takedown at 5:03 when Fisher had his leg it was a stale mate at best. I grew up being fed stories of John Smith that built him up to legendary status, - but look, he lost this match. Makes you wonder.
Fisher won if ........... you gave him the benefit of the doubt every time and gave him the single leg that happened when none of four feet were in bounds.
clearly NOT a 2 and 2 situation at the 7 min mark! the move was clearly, IMO, initiated by Smith! I score in Smith's favor... but that was some SHODDY reffing
If anyone is getting exposure that would be the wrestler whom first initiated(Fisher was being taken down)"As an official"in order for him to score from that position he would have to show me more control than that...Smith controlled the whole action -- He Jumped over.. and his opponent lifted at the same time (fisher)had no other wrestling option thus no control Thats why the rules are supposed to be geared towards the attacking initiating wrestler. In my opinion he earned that Match.
Fisher won this series. Too bad the calls didn't reflect that.

John Fisher is my coach now, he has a club out in Ann Arbor.
Still a hell of a competitor, and it's awesome learning from him.

Have a look at the video John Smith vs John Fisher 1991 World Cup. It ended 16-1- Smith victorious- the legendary status is well earned and deserved.

def should have been 2-1 for Fisher on the roll. some questionable calls...could have gone the other way, Smith def didn't dominate.

That roll should have gone 2-1 Fisher. A couple of those calls were janky.

John Smith should have to give his gold medal to John Fisher. Smith did not deserve to go.

I scored this 5-3 for Fisher.
