Proof positive that money isn't intelligence, and a license isn't skill. Next time you decide to explore the limits of your judgement, DON'T CARRY PASSENGERS!! They don't deserve to die just because you're a dumb-ass!
We had a crash last friday here in MX, an Eurocopter 332 crashed near mexico city, killing 8 passengers. I immediately thought about this video. Pilots trying to fly VFR on IMC. Guys on the helicopter were not as lucky and got a CFIT.
Good example of irresponsible flying. The pilot should have his license yanked. It's not like they "inadvertently" got into this situation - the weather was marginal to begin with to try to do a photo shoot. I would be ashamed rather than laughing for having exposed these souls to a near death experience.
"VFR into IMC? Hurr durr I'll be fine I'm in a Bonanza and I've got a GPS".
CFIT waiting to happen. I've seen things like this before, once pilots get to a certain level of experience they begin to assume they've seen it all before and can handle any situation. Overconfidence is the number one killer in aviation.
Hats off for putting this vid up- might want to repost it a few times under different titles to generate more interest... any pilot watching this has something to learn. Everybody who flies long enough will wind up doing something stupid inadvertently, and those lucky enough get to keep flying. Cheer.
2. Posts incriminating video for all including FAA to see how irresponsible and reckless the PIC was.
You need to spend some time on the ground re-orienting yourself with safety and if you are going to go for a Darwin award, don't be a jerk and take people with you.
I noticed a caption said to note the "GPS stuck to the windscreen"... That did not look like a GPS to me. As the pilot is concerned, flying around mountains is not for the inexperienced pilot.
Why do you guys ASSUME he flew that way on purpose? Bonanza is not F-15, he can't pull into the virtual and get up to a safe altitude. He needs lots of room and time to climb out of a dangerous situation.
As to why he flew into such conditions in the first place: Mountain weather is very unpredictable. It is quite possible to accidentally enter such conditions while being a safety minded pilot.
Sure he made a mistake. Was it due to negligence? This video is not sufficient to tell that.
It disgusts me how this happened with passengers aboard. Disregard for law and the life of others. Having passengers with you should make you the safest the goddamn pilot possible, it is a HUGE responsibility.
This is an amazing video and one all pilots should watch about the hazards of scud running and VFR into IMC. It's a miracle you lived through this...seconds away from a fatal CFIT accident. Angels were on your wings that day.
This is an amazing video and one all pilots should watch about the hazards of scud running and VFR into IMC. It's a miracle you lived through this...seconds away from a fatal CFIT accident. Angels were on your wings that day.
Let see here...what can I say to sieze the moment...awwwwwwww yes...you clowns are idiots for getting into that plane with that FUCKING idiot that was flying it...especially the FUCKING idiot flying the plane into IFR conditions and no ticket. The FAA could nail your ass to the wall as they can clearly see the "N" number. Personally, myself...I wish the FAA would remove your balls.
"Inadvertent IMC and yet they continue flying up the valley" - quoted form the video at 1:01.
How do we know that they "continue?" Perhaps, the incident happened while the pilot was trying to get to better weather, or to climb to IFR altitude? Sure, a serous mistake has been made (entry into IMC), but we simply don't know enough to accuse a pilot of anything. As far as I see, he could be doing his best to get out of trouble as safely as possible, based on his skills/experience.
@drklop ya I feel bad for the guy cause I know he didn't want that to happen but if he was flying by his instruments which he obviously wasn't on a flight plan or with atc, he should have at least looked to see what the MOCA on an chart if your gonna be in the mountains, and even if he didnt mean to continue, he was still scud running which got him into that situation
@drklop I agree that we don't know what he was thinking/doing. However, based on that you can't tell others to not bash the guy for being an idiot and then make the the assumption that he was "doing his best to get out of trouble"? It goes both ways, unless you were in the plane and on comms with the pilot. That said, in the end he clipped vegetation in IMC conditions. No one else but the pilot is responsible for what happened.
@contrail25 I never made any assumptions. I was just stating a counter point... Which is sufficient to not bash him. All I'm saying is that if you don't know exactly what happened, stop accusing the pilot.
True, what ever happened, it is the pilot's fault. But, as I said before, we don't know if this mistake is due to negligence. Anyone, even a good safety minded pilot, may potential make a mistake and enter the IMC, if he decides to fly in the mountains.
what can i say? would be one more example of cfit and the poor guys behind the pilot pay high price just be the wrong place and bad time...this video it's a shame...
I hope that was nervous laughter I heard because if it wasn't it would be scary knowing there are half-tards out there who would think this was funny. The pilot ought to be seriously embarrassed of his actions and apologetic to his passengers. Thanks for posting this.
Just maybe he said "I learned about flying from that". Its easy to be critical when you are not in the cockpit, but it is very similar to a recent fatal accident in the UK.
Why on Earth didn't he climb to a sensible height? Even if he didn't have the capacity to calculate an actual MSA in-flight I'm sure he'll have known roughly how high the local terrain goes.
An amazing display of disregard for human life. Unfortunately, his passengers foolishly placed their lives in his hands. As a pilot, I hope to never make choices for my passengers that unnecessarily increase their risk.
hmm...I don't know much about piloting, but is there another instument he is supposed to use instead of the GPS, becuase I can't think of anything else more reliable than a GPS.
He's a realtor in SoCal with Re/Max Palos Verdes. You can look him up - his yahoo address is listed. What a total fucking idiot. I hope someone reported this to the local FSDO.

I wouldn;t recommend going with him.
