These two ladies are wonderful, each in her own way. The comparison is difficult, because the stage productions are completely different. Gruberova's depiction of a queen (Diva!) going mad with love and jealousy is more realistic with the modern staging, the reference to Elizabeth's age and baldness, the crowning glory of a woman being her hair. Caballe's voice is so magical. And she tossed the literal crown. Interesting opportunity to compare. Thank you so much!

Not a very fair comparison. Most of the tessitura of the piece is low, where Caballe is more comfortablebu also makes the two climaxes on B natural sound more desperate in her voice which works for dramatic purposes. Additionally, Caballe's voice is more Mediterranean which is more suited to this rep than eastern European voices. It's a shame you didn't choose the earlier version with Edita Gruberoba circa 1992 when she was at her peak: it would have made a better comparison.

@Dymension As far as the acting, though, the comparison is equally unfair in Gruberova's favour, only because she is unsurpassed in her ability to play mad scenes. Both brilliant artists.

Thanks for making it clear that all comments are welcome! I prefer Gruberova in this and that is saying something.. because I almost always prefer Caballe, but this role has a high tessitura, and Beverly Sills made a great success of it, and like Gruberova had a high high voice.. Caballe's high notes sound very strained, and at the edge of her range. Although I prefer her ending without the high note.. Gruberova's is weak.

Realmente, me duele que hagan estas comparaciones absurdas...como van a comparar a una Guberova :soprano lirica lijera de coloratura de 62 años, con la Caballe: soprano lirica spinto o lirica pura de 46 años en esta opera....primero son voces completamente diferentes y edades avismales para la opera....por que no ponen comparacion entre sopranos del mismo timbre de vos y mas cercanas las edades..

Ich finde es unschön, die 2 wohl schönsten Stimmen der letzten 40 Jahre in so einen Vergleich zu pressen. Meiner Meinung nach haben beide Aufführungen ihren Reiz und sind wunderschön (und das von dem Caballé-Fan vor dem Herrn). Und dem Himmel sei Dank ist Oper immer noch eine Sache des Geschmacks. Also haltet Euch nicht mit diesen dummen Vergleichen auf und schreibt eure bissigen Kommentare unter die Videos von der Netrebko, da sind sie gut aufgehoben.

Je suis nâvré de dire que Gruberova, que j'admire particulièrement, est ici GROTESQUE: ne parlons pas de la proximité de la prise de vue- Caballé et d'autres en sont victimes- mais le style est épouvantable: portamenti, stridences, voix volontairement privée de vibrato, un vibrato qui revient comme une vrille l'instant d'après... C'est terrible, et de parlons pas des vocalises dignes d'une cocote ivre. J'ai souvent entendu Gruberova en concert, mais là stop!!!

Gruberova: the greatest, actually her intrepretation can't be topped by anyone. Great singing and great acting.

Caballe: I like her voice, but her singing here is not good at all: often she sounds like screaming. Furthermore, I can't understand a word of what she's singing (she's also forgotten a lot of words).

il fraseggio, poi, è manierato, stucchevole, artefatto,...la vocalità pur essendo in declino si potrebbe anche salvare, ma è il taglio interpetativo a risultare inaccettabile e insopportabile

@carlo331 Guarda, contando che è una regia moderna (e anche piuttosto buona aggiungerei) lei recita sempre in modo eccellente. L'ho vista dal vivo tre volte: Norma, Lucrezia Borgia e Roberto Devereux. L'ho preferita come Lucrezia Borgia, tuttavia è stata grandiosa anche negli altri due ruoli, e il pubblico (nonché la critica) ha dimostrato di gradire, e molto. Fortuna che c'è lei, perché fosse per le altre...

@DiegoMartinazzoli ...Anche io l'ho sentita più volte dal vivo, in concerto e in opera. Che sia stata una grande cantante è fuori discussione. Non metto in dubbio le capacità vocali e virtuosistiche, ma quelle espressive. Come interprete è sempre stata tendenzialmente manierata , ma qui è stucchevole, gigiona e insopportabile...la regia poi è ridicola, e la trovata della parrucca stavista in altri spettacoli.
