  • its so awsome all the things you can do with a Dreamcast..! Truely amazing stuff!

  • Everdrive for the Dreamcast anyone?

  • клево теперь поменяй процессоры и добавь оперативки)

  • very nice and clean mod, really like it. looks much better that the SD adapter.

  • this is awesome how much would you charge to do this for someone

  • weren't you in trainspotting?

  • you are smart :o

  • I wonder if using a faster rated SD card would help as there are some rated for high speed data transfer

  • @RetroGameTech if I give you my address will you please send me a dreamshell disk? I have the SD card mod done but I don't have a CD burner

  • I dont get it? you can burn and play any game on DC already whats the point in the mod??

  • @ghettochildusa To not have to burn a CD every time you want to play a new game, to have multiple games on a single SD card, to not need to swap discs to play new games or access ROMs for emu, to just have more storage space to work with, lots of uses for this. It's especially useful for testing homebrew games and versions, mods etc., no need to burn a CD every time.

  • @Aleksael Thanks for the elaboration makes perfect sense now lol, /facepalm to myself lol. I may have to do this as well

  • Do you have to flash the bios or anything on the dreamcast for it to read from the SD card? Or is it just a wiring job?

  • Couple of quick questions about your stripboard layout:

1.) The blue lines are bridging just those two points right, NOT the ones in between them (for example the b through f bridge would not connect c,d and e as well right).

2.) What are the red dots? I'm assuming I would sever the connections on the strips at those points right?

    3) Anything special about that green connector wire? Or is it just like the other blue lines.

Sorry if I sound like an amateur but I'm just recently got into mods

  • that is impressive if i had a sega dreamcast i do that to

  • can you mod my wii? ...(that didnt sound right)

  • if i ever become the President of Sega THERE WILL be a sega dreamcast 2

  • That's pretty much it, quite simple.

    LMFAO

  • Very nice, Too bad Im not as tech saavy or I'd do this myself.

  • Other then it being nicer looking and all that is there any performance difference between the Mod and the SD adapter?

  • Would it be possible to do a mod based on the Iomega Zip Drive for DC to convert it to a hard drive ??

  • @wingnut4427 Iomega NEVER released the Zip drive adapter for DC. It never went into production and only a couple prototypes were known to exist.

  • Nice video, and nice mod.

For those asking you need a DC built before November 2000. I have a Oct2k DC and I have every DC game in .cdi format from underground gamer((the best for retro they have every game and every emulator)) and i use disk juggler to burn the .cdi's and I toss them into the DC and it plays every game every time like its the real deal. No hard modding at all. Those are the easiest DC systems to play backups.

I'd love that mod tho It would save me a lot of space! gj mate

  • Is there a way just to bypass the GD drive altogether? And couldn't you just defrag DOA to make it work?

  • @RMwashere apparently there is away and i believe that might have something to do with flashing the Dreamcast bios but i think a couple months ago found a much easier way of doing it but i could be wrong

  • What's the class on you SD Card? I know the higher class cards can read data faster, and may help with some of your framerate and loading issues.

  • @AngelsDemonic iv been using backup copies on my dreamcast for over 6 years now and i have never had a problem with it. it still works perfect for orignal games and back ups :/

the dreamcast was made to run cd discs too aslong as the disc is good quality you shouldnt have a problem.

  • @CHUNKIEBOYSKINNY do you know any website with high quality PAL ISOs for my dreamcast? I've read somewhere that for lowering the risk of damaging your console you should create the ISOs in a certain way.

  • Just wondering whats the point in the sd slot? Dreamcast run backup games with mod anyway, just wondering thats all as I might be missing something

  • Wee bit :)

  • oh no he is a pirate nowsega will never get the money for their dreamcast games in 2011 9 years after the dreamcast went down people use your heads he just tring to expand his love for dreamcast nothing wrong with that ppl r jus jellous due to the fact they cant do that

  • You seem to know a lot about DC hardware. Any chance you would be interested in making a nice tutorial on how to make the DC HDMI compatible?

  • @AtomiXStudios Kinda pointless as the resolution wouldn't go up since the graphics processor almost definitely couldn't display at such high resolutions, however, there is a dreamcast VGA adapter that creates extremely crisp and high resolution graphics, I recommend getting this instead, and it doesn't even required any modification of the internals.

  • @Cherootoe Thanks bro!

  • Theoretically, couldn't someone wire a usb interface to the serial port and run games from a USB Harddrive ? Amazing hardware skills. Blows my mind just watching the mods done to DC consoles.

  • @Lightsylvan

Has anyone answered you? Reading your question made me feel a bit excited!

    :)

  • @bensons999 Neg, however I have recently just found an excellent blog. This person is attempting to emulate the GD-ROM of the Dreamcast. In emulating the GD-ROM, he could build an interface to allow games to be read from a USB interface. He's made progress but ecountered alot of barriers. Pure Genius. Gknute's Live journal.

  • homebrew i like video .. and now your subscribe

  • home brew

  • Dreamcast is the most underrated system of all time.

  • @SirGriefALot

It's pretty highly rated, right across the board. I don't think many would disagree with that.

  • @SirGriefALot not quite. It received universal acclaim in 99, still does, and it's one of the most beloved systems ever.

  • @SirGriefALot you mean over looked

  • @SirGriefALot not rly ,outside europe the master system and outside of japan the saturn are waaaaay more underrated !

  • Ran out of space. Maybe it's the interface and not the card that is so slow and all that I said below is smoke in your face. Just trying to be helpful here.

  • Hey RetroGameTech, if you check this ever, I have a tip. Some of the games like that fighting one don't play to well because the card's data speed isn't fast enough. You can see the activity led is on continuously there while it may blink a little here and there for other games. Try a high performance sd card. I have a Top Ram level 10 64 Gb version that I will try once I get my sd reader for my machine. I was lazy and bought one off eBay. My card has a max data rate of 104 mb a second.

  • favriquee la ficha para dreamshell mirar video

  • Nice like Mod there , Hope to see more Games & online Play ! :) QC

  • seaman. three letters. lol.

  • I wanna mod my DC ... but at the same time if you say hardware limitations makes game slower than the GDROM ... it's pointless >.<

  • Ha Ha its always awesome hearing a Scottish accent

  • OK BUT CAN IT RUN SHENMOO?

  • @du0lol you dont really need this mod to play shenmoo, you can simply download the .cdi and burn it with a program called discjuggler pop it in and play it. wont need any mods

  • @PsiloCybinDreamX Won't work on a dreamcast with a semi-busted disc drive :(

  • @du0lol ahh damn well go get another one from a used game shop I bought mine for 20 dollars with a controller and a VMU

  • @PsiloCybinDreamX Dream of my life. I live in a piece of crap country known as Brazil. A used, working Dreamcast unit costs here the equivalent to some $200 ._.

When I bouht this Dreamcast some 2 or 3 years ago, it was the equivalent to $280.

Xbox 360? Cheapest kit, without HD and all costs the equivalent to $450. :C

  • @du0lol weird, could always try ebay

  • @du0lol But you have hot girls over there in Brazil look at the bright side. Anyways here in the USA since the DC was so under appreciated you can get one for like $20. Games most of time are under $10. Most games can be had for about $6 bucks.

  • @bacardipr05 Wanna make a trade? 8D

Well, from that I can't complain. I even live by the south, the place where the european immigrants were most abundant. Nevertheless, it's always a pain to spend $20 on a game plus some $13 on mailing, not to mention consoles and all. Hopefully the situation will change soon. Some dudes are trying to lower taxes over games and software here. If it works, prices should come quite decent.

  • @du0lol I hear you dude...hope it does work out...

  • @14iAmMe hey everybody check it out. its a retard XD seriously go troll somewhere else

  • Well,if the dev boxes could handle the HDD,surely it can SD cards.

  • dat 30 second load time

  • I think I'm gona buy a dreamcast ;)

  • Youre a F*cking beast :)

    Thank you for existing!!!

    I want the same slot!!!

  • Thanks Retro. I'm all modded up for SD card thanks to your inspiring videos. I even have the make sd iso app for PC too. Happy days. The Dreamcast also has amazing NED,SNES and Genesis emulators with virtually all roms that runs off the SD!! Will be doing the BIOS flashing switch mod soon so that even Dreamshell 4 will boot from startup off SD. C'mon Dreamcast - Still Thinking!

  • what region was sonic adventure?

  • All that work when you could have just burnt off the Iso images onto a cd and played the burnt copies on your Dreamcast =]

  • that's amazing, dude.

  • omg, you suck at pac-man. lol, jk, I know...

  • "Tokyo highway racer", is that 'Tokyo extreme racer' for those of us in North America?

  • If I get me a debt card Im buying like 4 dreamcast from amazon.com

  • omg he says wee 15 to 23 times lost count XD

  • Can you build a dreamcast for me like yours? It's amazing! If you say yes, please contact me.

  • psd .please keep making videos, I only recently found your channel , good stuff!

  • im modding my DC but the SD card can be plugged in using the port on the back ,, when its done I will upload a vid for you to see,,

  • there's a lot of Wii stuff on your dreamcast. :(

  • Hey! Nice MOD!!! By the way my project would be to add a port for multicart reader! Can you do that!!? And if you do Can you share project research as a tutorial!? Thanks

  • could you buy the DC sd card reader and just take it apart and solder the contacts to the serial port inside???

  • wouldn't the frame rate be better if you use PAL versions?

  • @PolarT76 The FPS of NTSC games run at 60 FPS PAL games run at 50

  • Awesome job :)

  • @Coolboy529 Did you say something, wee sacs?

  • @Coolboy529 Have fun punching someone through a computer.

  • METALMAN4Wii got owned and this vid was made the day after i made my youtube account.

  • xbox 1 & dreamcast are hacking beasts

  • also, can you do an sd card mod for the VMU card? tthat would be SOOOOOOOO helpful.

  • you are a complete badass, i applaud you good sir.

  • is there a hack for the original rom to support booting from an SD-Card at all?

  • nice but i would rather keep my game the only time i rip them just to change their audio track . so i do mod my own game. beside that you have did pretty good on the mod. i remember this sd card concept when it came out two year ago but no one know how to used it well.for me i sticking with cd-r and light-scribe. and thank you

  • Класно тоже хочу сделать себе кардридер на дриме но нет времени

  • @METALMAN4Wii

Or maybe he doesn't want to waste CD-Rs on homebrew he may never play again.

  • @METALMAN4Wii Lol, you're kidding right? For a start this is only really for playing homebrew since most retail games don't even work properly from SD card. Secondly, I collect original Dreamcast games/peripherals and even have multiple copies of the same games from different regions.

I get really tired of people who blindly assume and label anyone who mods a console as a pirate.

Besides all that, where would be the harm in downloading games that have been out of print for nearly a decade?!

  • @RetroGameTech Amen, my brother. I just got my Saturn modded. Best investment EVER! I can now play Radiant Silvergun on a REAL TV!!!

  • @RetroGameTech any chance of a usb hdd mod this be best mod even hope of mod bios that might load usb wifi card :)

  • @RetroGameTech

Don't be so harsh to them. They're the brainwashed people who believe every shit that comes out of a dev's mouth. Mods are OK because it's your damn property. Piracy is a non-issue because they would never buy in the first place and it's a non-perishable non-exhaustable good.

  • @METALMAN4Wii

    You're an idiot.

  • @METALMAN4Wii

    Because...... he can !

  • @METALMAN4Wii you dumbfuck you don't have to mod the dreamcast to pirate games, you dont even need a modchip... it's fucking very well-known. he is just experimenting with something he obviously loves. you should think before you speak just like your parents should have thought before they reproduced.

  • @RD400D78 Sorry I'm not a Sega Dreamcast fan I play a nextgen console....!

  • @METALMAN4Wii He probably traded that system for a xbox slim or ps3 -.-

  • @METALMAN4Wii It's really more about the challenge and practice... some people aspire to go into electronics, others do this as a hobby.

  • Technically if people still gave a shit about Dreamcast hacking game should be down sampled to solve issues of sd card. The serial port can only stream so much so you could down sample the audio bit rate in the battles. You could also use lower resolution textures if you really had the skills to do so.

  • lol at people almost 10 yrs later playing their dreamcasts and xbox had recalls less than a year after launch and still to this day. Dreamcast 2!!!!!

  • 2 Questions, do you know anymore about running a whole IDE Hard drive on a DC, not been able to get alot of information online, and the other is, does the DC still make those horrible motor sounds that it does when a CD is inside? I live in a house with 2 toddlers and can't make much noise once they're in bed, the sound it makes currently stops me playing at late night.

  • @LiBrA86 Also, Which Stripboard from Maplin did you use, I'm UK too and there's like 8 different boards. xD

  • with this we could port some large games to the dc

  • if i did that mod there would be wires every where :P

  • how did u do that i want to mod my dc were it can play off a montor and a clear window were the disc goes and 16lights leds around the top and contorller ports

  • Comment removed

  • If this thing can run Shenmue 1 flawlessly, then I'm sold.

  • @TacoMoFoKo Who's Darrell and why are you so angry with him?

  • @RetroGameTech Is there such a thing as a solid state cd/dvd player something that can read cd or dvd but no moving parts?

  • @RetroGameTech

Hi ,what cable do you use for connecting Dreamcast with ur TV in this video ?And is this a TV(LCD,CRT) or monitor :) ?

    I love dreamcast,I bought 3 PAL and 1 NTSC -J consoles in past 10 months :)

    Cheers

  • Can you run neogeo games on an emulator like mame or neo4all? If you don't know, would you mind trying for me. I'd like to do this mod but only if i could play games like king of fighters or metal slug.

  • The cardslot on the front looks much better...

  • please try quake 3 arena from sd, does quake 3 work?????

  • @RetroGameTech so if u were to load all of the games onto a GD ROM, and then put dreamshell on the SD card, would the games that were choppy run better?

  • @RetroGameTech so if u were to load all of the games onto a GD ROM, and then put dreamshell on the SD card, would the games that were choppy run better?

  • Works it with Tokyo Highway Challenge 2 too !?! This Game Streams a lot ammount of Data when Racing ...

    mfg Bluebird

  • SD Card readers now for sale from China! look in my video to the right to see where to buy them. Mine only cost $11.14 with shipping and thats with cheap old snail mail.

Also, if you guys have this mod, you can download the special SD ISO's from DCISOZone, I have started uploading the first batch of SD ready games.

  • when will you show us while you play scottish man ?? :D

  • Yeah! Now I can PLay on GD isos- no from CD - 1GB GAME :D !!! It's true :P

  • do you have the orange and blue logo also in usa ?

i thought you can have the blue only in europe and the orange in japan and usa :]

  • not sure if it's possible but it would make sence for such a mod to replace the CD-ROM drive instead of relying on SLOOOW serial connections...

  • could you try out PSO? i wonder if its any playable on this mod. Thank you.

  • How i make a ISO image? I did the MOD, works fine, but the software don't run CDI images, and I can't transform my games in ISO images, only CDI.

  • @TheSpeedRain You need to extract all the files from the .cdi then package them into a .iso

  • So wait, is the SD card faster or slower than the GD Rom drive?

  • @FeeLtheHertZ It doesn't matter how fast the SD card is. It's connected to the serial port which is MUCH slower than the GD rom. You are limited by the Dreamcast's hardware not the SD card's capabilities.

  • i was thinking maybe the led sould have been where the power led is but in another colour that would make your mod alot more sweet.Im all for design

  • i don't understant realy well

it can play all the games from the sd card or just a few of them?

  • uhm, what are those red square things with red dots?

I find following the stripboard ver easier since I can't read schematics properly, being a real noob at this, I'm really noob.

I was able to solder wires to the dc serial and followed the stripboard as it's on the image. dc won't turn on and the + wire, pin10 from dc, keeps getting hot. dc boots fine when I disconnect pin 10 which supposedly is supplying the power?

  • I'll buy this off of you!

  • Shame the serial port is the weakest link. Has anyone suggested a solution of how to access data from the sd card via whatever links the GD Rom player to the system?

  • What variety of SD card are you using for this? I'd imagine a faster SD card might eliminate any unintentional bottlenecks that might cause some of these issues. Truth be told I haven't really looked into the technical bits of this mod.

  • @8:10

i'm pretty sure that setting sound to mono and deactivating music (especially if the game uses CDDA tracks) will decrease amount of streamed data and help the slowdowns...

  • Great and professional mod, looks factory to me. A+ work.

  • Beautifully done, I really like the small touch of the blue access light. Looks like I have some schematics to print out!

  • Great mod

  • This is amazing dude, thanks for sharing! :)

  • Even when the games that don't work this is an excellent mod!! Is this documented anywhere so I might do it myself to my own Dreamcast??

  • @nathanallan1 original schematic, my stripboard design and Dreamshell developers website are all in the description ;-)

  • @RetroGameTech I saw it right after I hit Post, so felt dumb and now am going to make something cool for my Dreamcast. Thanks!!

  • @nathanallan1 lol, no worries. You should post a vid when you're done!.

  • @RetroGameTech Anything I get my hand son and mod I will definitely make a video. WOW.

  • that SD card reader you cut into the case looks professional, kudos to you man!

  • I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question but is it possible to bypass the serial port to increase the data transfer rate?

  • @JimakuAnimation it's not as simple as that sadly.

  • @xTHExSTIGx Thanks!. Patching the games is easy. You just need to rip all the game files from your original .cdi .nrg .iso GDROM etc etc. Then you modify the IP.BIN file and repackage everything into a new .iso. There are tools available to do all this on the Dreamshell developers website.

  • just like my flashed xbox =]

  • with the load times, does it depend on the SD card's speed itself?

  • @watermeloncat P.S. most mods i see look really sloppy, this looks amazingly well done! thanks for sharing :)

  • @watermeloncat no, you are limited by the Dreamcast's serial port sadly. That's why some games that need to access a lot of data while playing have framerate issues. I think the serial port maxes out at 1.5mbps or something like that. The card I used in the vid was a class 6 SDHC 4GB but it makes no difference since the serial port is limited to 1.5mbps.

And thanks!. I like to keep any mods I do looking as stock and original to the console as possible.

  • looks really good! I tried modding my PSP one time and it turned into some sort of macaroni art messed up system! lol I've gone through five PSP's when I used to mod! #LOL

  • @WhatAreYouBuyen 5!?, lol. Thanks btw.

  • Very cool

  • Man I am really impressed, I wish I had the skill to do that, dammit I have 3 Dreamcasts too!

  • @MaximumRD do it!, lol. It honestly doesn't take much technical ability to pull this off. Besides, you have at least 3 chances to get it right :).

  • Awesome job!! :)

    What a great idea!
