I believe this song is about Biko here is some info Stephen Bantu Biko (18 December 1946 12 September 1977)[1] was a noted anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. A student leader, he later founded the Black Consciousness Movement which would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population. Since his death in police custody, he has been called a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement
Yeah, this song is about South Africa, the apartheid. "Cry Freedom" is actually a book about the life of Steven Biko, a South African activist who was murdered by the cops.
It's about South Africa. Cry Freedom is a book written by a reporter about Steven Biko,a black South African activist who was murdered by the government.
Please tell me you don't mean "burn this (iraqi) flag to dust, and new fair design (American flag) be raised. Wait, if that's your perspective, don't bother replying. That is not what this song, or what Dave stands for.
People always jump to conclusions based on what others write. Maybe the person meant burn the Iraqi flag(current government) and let a peaceful one reside over it.
This song is not about, nor was it inspired from the war in Iraq. This was written and recorded long before the US invasion of Iraq. Know your history and check your facts before saying its about something it is not.
You probably do know about Dave than I do. Your comment about Iraq is confusing to me and that is why I commented the way I did. If I was in error and misinterpreted your comment I do appologize.
this song fits any oppressive situation, like many of dave's songs he wrote back in the early 90's it has a basic theme but can be applied in a lot of situations, from apartheid to Iraqi dictatorship to War torn western Africa, the meaning is the same.
