@mrtheoneandonly83: You and I both heard the same thing about Marion Williams writing the song, but I can say that Clara didn't just slap her name on the song. I was told a while back, by 2 credible sources, that Clara did buy the song from Marion.
@hprewitt: Kitty Parham is right in front of Marion Williams. As mentioned above, Kitty Parham is the one hitting the high notes. Clara Ward didn't hit high notes, and what may have been seen in the movie A TIME TO SING, where Clara hits a note, it was someone else. She's just lip-synching.
@trezj74: Yes, it's Kitty hitting the notes. Marion wasn't the only one that would do the notes, but she's the one that gets all of the credit. Sometimes Thelma Jackson would hit the high notes, as well as Ethel Gilbert and Carrie Williams. I've posted another song on here, with Kitty hitting high notes. It's their recording "Everyday Will Be Sunday." It's under 'Tribute To Kitty Parham'. Also, I've posted a song "Thank Him Everyday" and Kitty hits a note in there, but it was later years.
If i might add, the Apollo theater always filmed the Stars that appeared there even during the 1940's,1950's and 1960's(including)The WARD Singers,Caravans,James Cleveland.. etc..,Thanks for the post !
I've been trying to find a way to get that footage myself. When they released all of those volumes from the Ed Sullivan Show, I wish they would've included the Ward Singers.
Oh, and I tried to embed this wonderful song on my Facebook profile but it was refused. Never happened before & I'd love for my friends and family to have easy access to it -- any idea what's wrong? Thanks and very best wishes!
I have been a fan of the Wards for many yearsa and have some of their music. But thanks to YouTube I have been getting an additional history lesson. I had no idea that Kitty Parham was the one hitting the high notes. I have listened to this song for years...keep the posts coming
As a young child I remember watching the Wards and Marion Williams sing this song on my family's yellow wood three-legged television set that had a twelve inch square screen right in the middle of the front! The TV was twice as tall as me and it had 'rabbit ears' for antennas! But the Wards sounded great to me on that old TV!
Marion Williams composed this song and sold it to Clara Ward for $25. The single was released after The Stars of Faith had left Clara. Had they remained this would have been a super-hit. Many years later Marion recorded a killer version of it in her church. In her last days she took Kitty with her on the road. Confined to her chair by sickness Marion could still whoop and holler while Kitty would cut those lighting-quick steps. All that's gone to come no more.
Wonderful post my friend Rowoches!! This is the original studio recording, and I have always loved this one. I was wondering when was someone gonna post this song, the live versions are good, but the it's good to the studio recordings too. lol. you get my 5 stars!!!
Yep! She could! If you've ever heard the Stars of Faith's version of "I'm Looking To Jesus" from 1962(?), she hits notes in that. She only led 3 songs with the Ward Singers, and in each of them, she hit notes.
I understand that Marion Williams wrote this song, but Clara slape her name unto it!

You sure that's not Marion on the high notes? It sounds like her and I do see her in the picture.

Awesome! Anyone have a video of when they were on Ed Sullivan? A memory I cherish from my childhood.

Though I have disabled the embedding code, you should still be able to post it on YouTube.

Kitty Parham's silver-bright voice led many Ward Singers shout songs; she developed incredible power and agility as a young soloist in the COGIC.
