  • This isn't true Namahage but a showcase for tourists.

A real namahage is holding a kitchen knife covered with blood and threatening kids not to bother your parents and kids can't even cry.

Living in a remote village is hell

This social custom well describes the Japanese idea that all the members of community is responsible for raising children. We shoud respect this kind of custom.

  • So this is supposed to teach your kids to behave and to not cry? It doesn't seem to be working.

  • awww,I understand that it's part of their culture and hey, do whatever you want!I would feel so bad though for doing this to my future offspring! my father used to "persuade" my cousin and I when we were younger (he was about 7 and I was about 3) to watch horror movies, Rated R, almost every weekend. It literally made us into big babies, I'm still afraid to sleep without a night lamp and i'm freaking 18 now! so it's not abuse, it's just how people raise their children through different cultures.

  • you guys don't understand. before you complain about these situations, you should check out about Nmahage and the Japans culture on Wikipedia. you might think its bad but to be more strict to your children is the one way of love. more than making the kid spoiled and stuff. if they don't care about there children at all, they don't bring there child all way to the Namahage. get it ? every country has the different ways of teaching.

  • SICK!!

  • hehe i sort of wish they did the namahage when i was younger

i would probebly be a better kid..

or i would never trust my parents again. haha:)

  • This looks like fun! Locking up toddlers in a dark closet for three days and listening to their screams must be a big laugh, too.

  • Creepy.

  • This is totally cool. Is it a Western Chinese Yeti show?

  • @Ribavirin9

This is Namahage. It is a Japanese ritual which is observed throughout Oga Peninsula, Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan. Check out Namahage with Wiki!

  • Sons of dogs.

  • Great way to give your kids psychological issues. This is disgusting.

  • Kids are a lot more resilient than you think.

  • @PAMuffinMan agreed, keep e mon their toes

  • Yes, but you never know which ones are going to be *less* resilient than you think. These are the kinds of experiences which can scar some children. That's why I'm against it - I don't like fear/torture/unnecessary pain for any reason, inflicted on anyone.

  • @ ReligiousFiction

Same reason that I detest threatening children with eternal damnation in Hell. It's frankly a cruel thing to do

  • @Baldurpet - bingo. Threats of torture, threats of abandonment - these are all abusive. Anyone who studies child development learns that.

  • this is not that different to what parents do to their kids in US when they take them to The Wiggles concert.

  • Nothin gets me off harder than the blood curdling screams of baby japs.

  • This is how I react every time I watch Nancy Grace or Sean Hannity.

  • the kid waves goodbye hahahaha

  • this is not abuse you crybabies. abuse is teaching your kids damnation

  • @romoaron - I agree that teaching the doctrine of hell is abusive, but so is this practice. Think of it from the child's perspective - it is the worst of all fears: powerful monsters, unprotective and unloving parents, the fear of death. All of these combine in nightmarish proportions.

  • @ReligiousFiction - I completely agree. These children feel that they have no control over this situation. They are begging for reprieve to their parents, but their parents are just laughing at them. These children are going to have issues with not feeling safe for a long time I would bet.

  • @romoaron Can't both things be cruel?

  • stfu gabort71

    americans do this every Halloween

  • LOL

  • lol japs

  • baby is pleading with camera man LOL

  • Dumbasses. Now little Baling is going to catch Daddy hurting Mommy on one of the million times she crawls into bed with them in the middle of the night because of nightmares for the next 15 years.

  • could you imagine seeing this on acid? I'd lose it. I'm 32 and it's somewhat disturbing.

  • The little girl is like "fuck you mom, I hate you! I'm going to hide behind daddy from now on!"

  • hahaha stupid fucking kids

  • Worst Christmas Ever.

  • Get those kids out of there, you're annoying the hell out of the other people.

  • Those children are so cute I could gobble them up

  • @RegisteringSucks100 I was thinking of doing the exact same thing.

  • Are the kids who don't freak out the natural leaders?

  • LOL

  • oh my god this is the most insensitive thing I've ever read, but I'm laughing my ass off

  • what is wrong with that?

  • lol somebody's been watching too much hentai

  • For those interested..

It's a Japanese ritual called Namahage. It's a ritual for cleansing people's souls, and for blessing the new year.

Men dressed as demons, Namahage, visit the village, shouting: "any misbehaving kids live here?" They then scare children in the houses, telling them not to be lazy or cry. Then the parents will assure the Namahage that there is no bad child in their house, and give food or drink to the demons.

This encourages young children to obey their parents and behave.

  • Very informative, though I have to disagree on using the term encouraging here.

  • Thanks for the explanation

  • it also encourages them to never trust their parents, haha. did you see how the little girl wouldn't go anywhere near her mother after she'd held her up to the demon thingies? i cannot see how that could be good for their relationship.

  • We have something similar for sanct Nikolaus day (December 6.)

Sanct Nicolaus and his servant Ruprecht or Krampus come to the house, kindergarden or school and askes if everybody hase been good. (this is the origin of the american tradition of santa claus and his little helper)

Krampus is often dressed like a scary demon, carries a rod and first scares the kids, and Nicolaus is dressed as a bishop and gives sweets or presents to the good kids (every kid)

  • its exactly what my father used to do; he would dress up as a furry demon, then show up in my room in the middle of the night and shout at me not to be lazy; he still does it to this day from time to time

  • @strawbs1977 This is a wonderful idea. I have sent this immediately to my son, an American named Taro.

  • the monsters sound like ludo from labrynth. and i find this video slightly terryfing also

  • Remember, kids, THIS is what happens when you trust your parents!

  • That was funny AND fucked those kids up for life. :D

  • omg im SOOOO doing this to the kindergarten down my street

  • These children will have some seriously fucked up nightmares tonight.

  • i came

  • LMAO!

  • Is it wrong that I'm laughing as I watch this video?

  • @AhsanU I'm laughing too.

  • I lul'd

  • WTF

  • Aww.. STFU everybody.

You're the reason kids are growing up to be pussies.

    Scare your kids, it's hilarious.

  • That was some straight George Carlin shit! You sir, are awesome!

  • There are two views on this, BTW.

Some people think scaring your kids MAKES them into pussies. Others thing they'll grow up sallies if you shelter them... I think training a fear response into kids probably does make them more likely to respond that way, personally.

  • now there is no question to me as to why eastern culture has the best horror films.

  • It's a play you redneck fuckhole. Get a grip. The rate of rape in the US is twice that of Japan. Look it up you hillbilly fuckstain.

  • does someone need a chill pill?

  • loooooooooooooooooooooool

  • worst.mom.ever.

  • haha the little baby girl is adorable!

  • wait untill she grows up

  • Oga, Akita Prefecture, Oga City Traditions Mayama Namahage of experience. To scare naughty children a little hard, took. Other thoughts, the scene was a bit surprising even to adults. Namahage in appearance, said, "good boy to say yes - !"," from" and hear the voice of children. Namahage is a child's to great effect! Then, and some like a good boy.

  • NUT UP OR SHUT UP

  • Krampus is cooler and scarier. He flogs you with rusty chains and throws you in to hell if you are bad!

  • rofl the japanese are fucking awesome

  • Holy hell! No wonder the Japanese have nerves of steel.

  • Religion is the root of all evil.

  • @anothernick No, pride and greed is.

  • They'll survive. Sheesh people relax. Oh and any "tradition" whether Japanese or what have you, is always "fucked up" I guess eh?

You have "traditions" too right? Are they fucked up too?

  • It's a traditional festival.

These are mountain demons, they come each year and the children and parents have to do certain tasks to get them away.

Uhhmmm... you never heard about Halloween? Well, that's pretty much the same thing. People dress scary and this is the Japanese version of trick or treat. You have to satisfy these demons. Treat them well and they will give your house and family their blessing for the year and leave you alone, if you don't... well, you get haunted. ;)

  • Oh well if it's "traditional" then I guess that means it totally isn't completely fucked up.

  • It's pretty sad when the mom GIVES the daughter to the demon, I can't imagine what the little girl was thinking just then

o_O stuff like that will f kids up

  • @lynth Halloween is *NOT* about making toddlers cry.

  • @joblessjunkie It used to be, before the candy companies got their mits on it.

  • Shit. I need to re-plan next year's Halloween, then.

  • she Broke my heart </3

    (n)

  • what the fuck is this

  • LOL that's what I was thinking.
