  • My music teacher plays classical music and today he played this song and in both "surprises" I screamed and practically fell out of my chair. Haydn is genius.

  • beautiful

  • Muito bom! Gostamos muito!

  • Papa Hadyn was the original troll. ;)

  • its beautiful.. our teacher in music asked us to download this.. um...

  • Very nice!!!

  • So many naked people in these pictures.. gross! I'm only 16, here!!! lol

  • This is hard to fall asleep to...

    C'mon, you should get that!

  • yo, dope fiking mooziq, yo, 4 reals. jiggy. Haydn is my brodudemanyo. the paintings make me cry, for my lost boo.

  • cool

  • Haha Haydn was such an ass sometimes, i love him!!

  • Haydn and Mozart... Haydn actually played this piece for Mozart to represent their close friendship. : )

Ah, if only Mozart had lived longer.

  • Mr Haydn was a great genius of composition.

  • I have found a few of Haydn's pieces to be kinda funny. Who says Classical music can't be funny! lol

  • @FiddlerAdam

Lol, I know right, I read that comment too and I'm like...What in the F#&K?!

  • Beautiful...I can smell this symphony.

  • He wrote this symphony because the rich people after eating and drinking wastefully would fall asleep in his concerts, so he thought 'hey, these dammed bastards will pay: I will show them what real music is!!!' Great job Haydn...

  • the classical period whoops the baroque periods ass!!

  • It's amazing that these beautiful paintings can be so spiritual and erotic at the same time. The one of the child looking straight at you with her little finger in her mouth is very sensual. The romantic painters had a much different concept on children and child nudity than we do. Or did they?

  • He made this to wake up the king since he was always falling asleep during his symphonies. The Piano part was to put him to sleep, then the Forte (Maybe double F?) Was to startle him!

  • the pictures are amazing! where did you find them? (:

  • Wunderbar!

  • beautiful music and paintings, thank you!

  • i have to play this at my school

  • @itztimmy9900 you GET to play this at your school...not have to

  • This is one of my favorite first movements. it is playful, as msawaryn1 said. It reminds me a bit of Handel's rollicking spirit that is so enjoyable. I recommend that other viewers read EAST56123's comments under the chevrons for some very interesting observations. Thanks to those other collaborators who helped him in this fine presentation. Grazie a tutti!

  • Beautiful artwork - what is it?

  • My Daughter is studying composers, so we are listening to this

  • pretty pictures!

  • Las pinturas son de William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

  • What are the names of the paintings.

  • @JosephStalin11 William-Adolphe Bouguereau. have made the paintings. Beautiful it certainly is

  • Nice.

  • some one needs to build a gap kids or something. dem kids need boundaries.

  • ...Haydn was a bit of an odd duck, wasn't he?

  • YOU HAVE TASTE!, a favourite composers GREAT MUSIC, plus MY WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU, WOW, my head might just FALL OFF! : )

  • I just love Haydn. he's so brilliant.

  • This is my most favourite song, thank you for posting it on

  • Combination of Haydn, the father of symphony, and pre-raphaelite Bouguereau is great. Thumb up.

  • why all the paintings of women holding children or babies. Dont get me wrong they are lovely.

  • he worte this because there was a guy coming in to rate the music and hed always fall asleep then at the end rate it, but this woke him up and he screamed when they played the loud note, so everyone thought he was giving it a good rating

  • @deimoscrazy source?

  • @deimoscrazy band class we played it and read about it

  • thank you for this lovely barrage of delightful, masterful gems, both for the eyes and the ears!~

  • I love the one at 2:50 xD ornery

  • It's funny he wrote it because people kept falling asleep at his symphonies so he made this to wake people back up

  • @guyvascm your kinda right...

  • I love this peace, and their is quite a funny little joke behind on why he wrote it.

  • Thank you for uploading.

  • like some songs i hear in venetian

  • I don't like the first picture, but the music was great!!

  • the 2nd picture is so beautiful! What is it? Who painted it?

  • There is a scary suprise in the beginning of Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" aswell!

  • I love haydn's music. Awesome.

  • Who's the painter of these pictures? please

  • @TheBrandan6

William-Adolphe Bouguereau certainly painted the first and many, probably all, of the others.

  • When I listen to this symphony, I get the impression that Mr. Haydn was in a bit of a cheeky mood. It really is very playful! Fantastic.

  • @msawaryn1

It said that when he was "Kapellmeister" for the Esterházy family the people listening would sometimes fall asleep because his music was relaxing and they were tired after a long day. He got tired of people not listening to his music so he made the "surpirse" symphony so they would wake up.

  • @msawaryn1 Haydn loved to play jokes in his music to keep his audience interested. So, cheeky? Definitely. :)

  • @msawaryn1 Mr. Haydn "was in a bit of a cheeky mood" his whole life, and that's why some could even find his later Esterházy masses "outrageously cheerful".

  • @haranoe Yes, due to the fact he stole / paid for / had written all his compositions written by good mate at the time Mozart, oh & took a few lecturers from tutor Beethoven; hence the similarities but not so good qualities... A fake composer in essence a bit like your ridiculously "quote"...

  • @msawaryn1 It happened to him more than once. If you like his cheeky moods try out the "Joke" Quartet Hob. III/38 and the "Farewell" Symphony Hob. I/45 where the entire orchestra save two violinists leaves, on or two players at a time. It was a broad hint to Prince Nicolas Esterhazy that the orchestra wanted to get back to their families in Eisenstadt after an extended summer in Esterhaza.

  • @msawaryn1 are you a music teacher by any chance?

  • this is just amazing, I love Haydn's symphonies. Especially this one. It's one of his favourites. His slow intros are so famous for their calmness and their creativity. Well done Haydn!

  • beautiful symphonie, beautiful paintings ...

Who s are they, by the way ?

But the second movement is just like .. amazing !!

I study it at school now ... you must listen to it!

  • Whose paintings are those?

  • yeah they are.. fuckin weird man

  • Those paintings are something else.

  • you have got to love haydens sense of humor. i love the farewell symphony to

  • dbx125 is a twat, agreed? 313

  • It's caled "surprise" for the second movement. Listen it.

  • The Surprise is the Cadence. He leaves us wanting more notes at the end sequences, leaving us adrift. His absence of a complete progression lacks resolve, thus the, "surprise".

  • why is this symphony called Surprise?

  • cuz he has the symphony playing the opposite of the notes we expect to come next in most phrases

  • If you listen to the andante movement (second movement) you'll see why, as well as the allegro di molto (fourth movement). =D

  • listen to his 2nd symphony. It starts with a really quiet melody, and then suddenly a incredible loud beat of the kettledrum, so that the people who fall asleep wake up. I love this symphony!

  • lol my gf walks in and she thinks im watching porn

  • the ignorant gf u have.....

  • lmfao

  • @Danman917 fyi the pictures from 0:55 to around 1:18 are of the Virgin Mary and the Baby Jesus, and so are many others throughout the video.

  • @Danman917 oh lord can't believe I posted that I must of been drunk or something.

  • @Danman917 You're right. Roman catholic porn.

  • @Danman917 I'M ARRIVING

  • the paintings in this music are so awkward

  • Seems this painter had some slight pedo tendencies...

    fucking creepy chomo...

  • erf c'a va etre dur a gratter au violon :(

  • Gotta love this. Haydn got tired of people falling asleep during his concerts, and had that wonderful suprise worked in. Sure woke me up when I first heard this piece back in elementary school. I've loved this piece ever since.

  • Hello... here are the best images that I have seen... where do you take it? Who is the painter, please?

    See you soon!!!

  • boring??? i think it's beautiful!

  • ya! boring! this is great! hah! the 2nd mov. will wake u up!

  • I laugh at u

  • The surprise is in the 2nd movement.

  • What is the surprise?

  • haydn is a composer who is "naughty", he first allowed winds to lead the piece at the beginning which is uncommon during his time. and then throughout the piece when the melody is very soothing it will suddenly jump to be frivolous, then suddenly melodic. so there is a big contrast and thus the surprise.

  • Nice! I like! Although some of the pictures scared me.. I still liked it. Good job!

  • Excellent.Vey nice video.

"Surprise" Symphony is one of Haynd's better symphonies.
