I don't understand :S why was it on a plane? Cuz they would of know planes couldn't go into space, they are smarter than that. And they weren't just flying it some where else cuz it came off? Could someone help me with a serious answer? :)
The Shuttle is transported by the 747 back to Kennedy after a landing in California (or a maintenance period in Palmdale). The part where the Shuttle detached from the 747 was an early test flight in 1977, years before the first shuttle flew to space.
Thealienfan misses the point. There are not 600 passengers each with luggage. Nor seats. Nor crew. No trolleys, duty-free, books, papers, toilets etc. And of course, the shuttle will produce some lift from the airflow. Not enough to fly it, but enough to reduce it's effective weight
@mach25man That is fantastic. What an impressive sight.
Think of all the money the airlines must make when they charge you for excess luggage!! Yet it can handle the weight of the shuttle. What a rip off. Cheers : )
It is not amazing what we have achieved in our life-time ? How far we have come only in the last 50 years ?? And if we are just a spec of dust in the timeline of this universe, imagine what will be in the next 1000 years!
with the shuttle on the back it reduces the distance of a 747 quite alot it canonly travel 1 third of the distance than normal on a 747 without the shuttle on its back
I dont know much....but what exactly does a Carrier aircraft do? I mean....the space shuttle launches into the space on the sides of a rocket right???
In the US, there are two launch pads used more than others and they are at each coast - one in the East and one in the Ouest. The 747 carries the space shuttle to either when needed.
Plus, it carries the space shuttle to altitude and separates from it and astronauts train landing the shuttle.
And not to mention that it looks cool - for public support. haha
Did you make that all up smilymez? ALL shuttles have taken off from KSC in Florida. The plane is used to bring them back to FL in the event bad weather in FL forces a landing at Edwards in CA. And astronauts train to land in simulators, not on live shuttles. The seperation from the 747 was done once (the only flight of the shuttle Enterprise) as a live test of the shuttle's aerodynamics and landing abilities before she could be sent into space.
The shuttle always launches from Florida on the east coast every time. Astronauts learn to land in a G4 and simulators. Thats all ! The shuttle is only on the 747 when the orbiter lands in California and has to be transported back to Florida.
Nice clip. Must have been a pretty epic sight for the ones watching the Enterprise separate in-flight... not as epic as a proper Shuttle takeoff though :)
the 747 was carrying the prototype "Enterprise", used to test glide capabilities of the space suttle after its re-entry in the atmosphere, since the are no engines running during that part of the future missions of the suttle. Enterprise was never launched to space. This was in the late seventies. First suttle in space was ST Columbia in 1981.
This is not possible. The Shuttle needs the solid rocket boosters and the external tank to reach orbit, it couldn't be properly launched from the SCA (Shuttle Carrying Aircraft). These were only flight and landing tests of the Enterprise prototype in the 70's, at the beginning of the Shuttle program.
i should imagine alot has gone on we probably will never get to know about between boeing and nasa

How does the plane handle the extra weight?
TheAlienFan 2 years ago
The extra weight is no problem, Today's 747's can carry twice the weight of the shuttle. The drag from carrying this on top makes it a bumpy ride.
