I think it is pure instinct. It's difficult to be in such a situation and just accept you cannot do anything so just sit there and wait for a wall to slow you down.

I would of done the same. I played an F1 racing game and both of my wheels got ripped off due to colliding with two other vehicles. Not only I was still trying to steer, I was even leaning on my chair hoping the weight I apply on the chair would somehow magically transfer to the vehicle in the game and make me turn haha.
