Man....for how many times I've heard all these themes, I'm surprised I was never able to beat it....that last stretch of disappearing bridge in Ultimate strikes me down each and every time...
Back in the days I played this game 80% for the musical experience, 20% for the actual gameplay. I remember I felt lika a musician, performing for the other kids who watched me play...
Wow, thanks for posting this! I fell in love with this game in the early 80's when I was about 13, then I moved to another part of the country and couldn't find it anywhere. I never forgot that awesome Beginner Race melody though, or that cool finish line 'Boopity-boopity-boo!' noise.
I love this game, it was so ahead of it's time! Of course I very rarely if ever got past Beginner race so that theme is THE Marble Madness music for me. Very Danny Elfman or similar, I love it. I also love Practice Race, ambient before ambient was popular! I would LOVE to see a sequel to this game in the current generation, imagine how fun it would be with the Wii controls! (No, Super Monkey Ball is NOT the same)
The only version of the game I 'completed' was the Gameboy version. The reason why I say 'completed' is because the Gameboy version doesn't have the Ultimate Race and after you complete the second to last level, it goes back to the beginner race.
The highest I ever got to was level 4 (with it's beginning sabotage ramp). I remember the level 3 song stood out as my favorite, especially the end of it.
I played this in the arcade, and the booming surround sound really helps with the experience. I couldn't go back to the NES version after using the trackball in the arcade.
Dave Wise wrote the NES version and he's one of the best known composers. I like that version's music, but when you compare it to this version, FM Synthesis will kick NES' ass a lot.
@Doommaster1994 I guess he did the best with what he had. But can't hold a candle to the original. Original version is hard to find on Youtube. Thanks.
@BeigeNinja The NES probably had the best music of the home versions, unless i'm missing a version. Compare the NES with the amiga or genesis versions.
David Wise ported the music from the arcade version to the NES and he's one of the best known composers. That's why the music on the NES version is so good. He's one of the VGM Gods.
I used to always have trouble in the Intermediate race. That's how I came to love the stage music... To me, 4:24-4:41 was the game's way of saying "Time for this game to kick your ass!". Brings me way back...
I wish I had the arcade. The farthest I've gotten to is the Ultimate race but I've NEVER completed it. I completed the GameBoy version but the last race is the silly race, but after you complete it, the game just takes you back to the beginner race. Then the game loops from there.
Unfortunately, no. Sorry it took so long to reply. I thought I already replied to you. Anyway, I get the music off of my Midway Arcade Treasures disc. So whatever games are on there are the music I have.
Here from Tudor Jones - Reprogram sample, truckin awesome :)

Ultimate Race is one of the most epic soundtracks on Marble Madness.
Too bad it's the most under-appreaciated track too.
LordPhalanx 6 months ago
Well being 14 I can only ever play this on the Multicade at my dentists office. This has got to be one of my favorite games though.

Your welcome. Great story! And remember, there were no sequencers back then so they had to write the music in text like C4Q,F#3H, etc.
Doommaster1994 1 year ago
@50GallonDrum you could've gotten it for XBOX in Midway arcade Treasures 01

The Genesis version had better sounding music.

The chips are similar, but the Genesis has a better sampling output; however, the arcade version has somewhat more complex instruments.

The 1st song is my favorite. But all the songs are amazing.

The arcade version of the Ultimate Race theme is one of the most underrated tunes in video game history.
I'm stunned nobody's remixed it yet.
After all, it's not often that you hear a XYLOPHONE solo (8:50-9:00).
Trackball816 2 years ago
Actually they are bells but whatever. I agree.
Doommaster1994 2 years ago
I agree. I think the problem is that not alot of people make it that far, and if they remember one theme from Marble Madness, it's level 2.
I have this machine in my basement and it's a hit at parties.
