For me this was more exciting tournament than the olympics, because it opened the season, all teams were really in their full strenght (for the olympics, every time are some guys injured) and all teams had a couple of weeks (I believe) for training in their summer camps. Hope for a new tournament like this, but perhaps with more teams. For example every 5 years, 10-12 best teams following the world ranking, NHL would start two weeks later. It would be exciting for all fans

This was our last chance to see Mario at a high level. He played a few months of NHL in 05-06 before retiring. He was almost 39 here and still one of the best players on the ice that whole tournament. It was only the 3rd time he'd been able to wear the Canadian uniform internationally. Injury kept him out of the '91 Canada Cup and '96 World Cup and he was retired from 1997-2000 so he never played in Nagano.
I remember watching this game. If I remember correctly, it was late at night and Canada was being outplayed badly. The Czechs def deserved to win it and I remember Luongo playing phenominal.
Canada is best hockey country. number registered players is big. Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Shanahan, Roy end caries, and replaces Crosby, Lecavalier, Staal, Bergeron, Luongo and more. We should have Ručinsky, Reichel, Straka and more. but ours work with youth players isnt good. and we tooday lag behind Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia. but we realize this problem. Same with US. US shows up only at home and nowhere else and I don't even can think of the exception to this rule, with Kanadinians you probably could find 1 exception, with US not so much. NA countries basically have no hearth and will playing outside of NA. US and Kanada with zero of any type of medals in best on best outside of NA.
Canada has won several oversea IIHF tournaments in 1997, 2003, 2004 and even 2005 in Russia. To say Canada doesn't play good outside NA is stupid. They had a bad showing at the 2006 Olympics and didn't have their best players at the past few IIHF events so don't go saying it has to do with "home ice", it doesn't at all.

Bullshit tournament organization to give Kanada every advantage possible. Czechs had to travel half the globe to play this game just a couple days after the arrival (Same with Fins btw.). How about Canada travels to Czech Rep. and play the game there. Oops there is barely any tournament takes place over there, all tourney these days take place exclusively in North America.

Canada actually looked pretty good last night for most of the game. Not sure what happened really. At 2-2 I thought we were going to do fine. I don't buy that it was Miller either, he saw too many of the shots. Canada needs to get guys in front of him, forget the fancy passing and "skill," that usually doesn't win games on the small rink. But as someone said, last night was the game to lose, not later, so hopefully Canada's hit their low, which might take the pressure off.

Great game - I was happy Canada won, but the Czechs could easily have taken us out and won the tournament. Very equal teams in terms of talent and just a great game.
Czech started slow remember. There was talk of them not even trying.
And then they played Sweden and roasted them 6-1 in a total one sided game. They played great and Canada was lucky to win this game in O.T in a thrilling finish.
If Czech would have won this game I believe they would have beaten Finland in the final.

The main thing at that time was the players' psyche. The Czech head coach died due to a car accident only about two weeks before the beginning of the WC. The players were shocked completely and they weren't able to play at all. I really would like to know what they said to each other in the break between the 2nd and 3rd period of the game against Sweden. Because suddenly they played so well what nobody had a chance. If they had come to the final, they would have won. For sure.
I remember this game. Canada was completly OWNED by the czechs. They were lucky they won and could then beat Finland in the final, in a much easier game.

This was one awesome game. The Czech's have always played Canada well, for over 50 years now. This team came into Toronto and took our (Canada's) own hard hitting, get the puck deep mentality and almost beat us. This game was so good, made the final vs Finland seem boring.

Not to mention even they'd win in Europe it doesn't mean they'd win it at home. Italy is not home for Chechs. Do you understand this concept? Playing in Italy Chechs don't have home advantage or any type of advantage over others. Unlike Kanada that has huge crowd at their side even playing in US. Nearly every second Olympics and "World Cups" these days are in NA.

Czechs play to their abilities or over their heads, Kanada, considering their hype and boasting from their pesky fans, underperforms, chokes and so on and so forth. Yes, heart, considering how dramatically Kanadian heart squeezes and gets smaller when they hit enemy's territory. Kanadian Pride Kalib Starnes has bigger heart than Kanadians playing overseas.

Bullshit tournament organization to give Kanada every advantage possible. Czechs had to travel half the globe to play this game just a couple days after the arrival (Same with Fins btw.). How about Canada travels to Czech Rep. and play the game there. Oops there is barely any tournament takes place over there, all tourney these days take place exclusively in North America.

@CaptainMcDangle Lets see. Every time the tournament takes place in NA mostly in Kanada (you don't see soccer World Cup taking place every time in England ). Teams from other group had travel through the half the globe just to play the semis and a final with no time to recover and adapt to a different time zone. What kind of bush organization is that? Not to mention pocket refs. It is not coincidence that Kanada has never won a medal when best on best took place outside of NA (Japan and Italy).

More than half the players from decent hockey countries play in the NHL anyway. Officiating bias? Canada receives officials from a diffrent nationalities as does every country that plays, leading to bad calls against Canada as European officials call the standard in Europe, which is laughable at best.

The penalties were 1 per team in this game so even if the refs were Canadian(with a C not a K) there was no advantage to either side. Finally does any of this matter? In comparisson to Canada the Czech's are a joke of a team, you arguments make is sound like the Czech's are at the same level, but were wronged by "every advantage possible". That is "ridiculousness".

@seremuznato já ho nemám narozdíl od tebe, neboť k takovému zápasu, že byl ubohý se může vyjádřit jen někdo kdo má komplex z toho druhého jen proto že je lepší. a navíc nevzpomínám si, kdy by nám pomáhali rozhodčí... viděl si třeba včerejší zápas česko-kanada? myslím, že tam bylo úplně jasné na čí straně rozhodčí stáli, jen díky nim kanada prohrála jen o gol. tak se zkus dívat na hokej nezaujatě a nebudeš se muset nervovat u hokeje :-))

A nerovovať sa za čo určite nemám, sme v hokeji lepší, to keď si nepriznáš tak si poriadny zabednený idiot. Prehrali ste nad Nórmi a skôr ako sa začneš osočovať našou prehrou s Dánmi tak si uvedom že Dáni sú tohtoročný favoriti a prekvapenie majstrovsiev. Inak stačí len dodať že toto sú najdivnejšie MS aké som kedy zažil.

Canada actually looked pretty good last night for most of the game. Not sure what happened really. At 2-2 I thought we were going to do fine. I don't buy that it was Miller either, he saw too many of the shots. Canada needs to get guys in front of him, forget the fancy passing and "skill," that usually doesn't win games on the small rink. But as someone said, last night was the game to lose, not later, so hopefully Canada's hit their low, which might take the pressure off.

HRE on its base was more like catholic/military alliance living on a former fame of Roman empire as the symbolic capital was Rome. Of course nobles were playing each other so easily some Luxemburg could become a king of Bohemia and Emperor of HRE later on. However Prague or Bohemia itself is quite older and joined the alliance as a protection against polish and hungerians from the east and north. That was deep middleage...HRE become a German state federation much later in 15th century.

Czech started slow remember. There was talk of them not even trying.
And then they played Sweden and roasted them 6-1 in a total one sided game. They played great and Canada was lucky to win this game in O.T in a thrilling finish.
If Czech would have won this game I believe they would have beaten Finland in the final.

The main thing at that time was the players' psyche. The Czech head coach died due to a car accident only about two weeks before the beginning of the WC. The players were shocked completely and they weren't able to play at all. I really would like to know what they said to each other in the break between the 2nd and 3rd period of the game against Sweden. Because suddenly they played so well what nobody had a chance. If they had come to the final, they would have won. For sure.

This was one awesome game. The Czech's have always played Canada well, for over 50 years now. This team came into Toronto and took our (Canada's) own hard hitting, get the puck deep mentality and almost beat us. This game was so good, made the final vs Finland seem boring.
