ok... that does it, im subscribing to you cause im very intrested in japan and im even thinking of visiting. so might as well know if i need to run or examin the bugs there XD -all spiders are on the run away screaming list-
I saw my first Ant Mimicking spider while I was in Nikko (North of Tokyo). I didn't even know they existed in Japan. Most exciting thing I saw all day and unexpected. It had decided climb on to my bottle of tea, thought it was an ant, but notice it moved similar to a UK zebra jumping spider, plus 8 legs on closer inspection. Awesome, I took a photo but can't post here. Thanks for posting the video ^_^.
I've got a zebra jumper that has made my balcony its territory. In the spring there were several of them jumping around, now it's the last of the Mohicans. Amazing critter and cunning hunter.
@Doodlebug000 Well, you go ahead and disagree with 99% of the entire scientific community based on absolutely no evidence or benefits at all. We'll go with logic and probability. :)
@bluezgoldz It can see him. Jumpers stay pretty calm as long as they don't feel like you're going to eat them. Some of mine will hop on my hand even though they watch me bring it down to them. If he made a sudden move at that spider, it would have bolted to get out of his sight. I have several jumpers, and they spot me even further out than what I have read about them. I was 6 feet from a jumper, and it kept eyeing me as I moved. I was testing to see how far out she would follow my movements.
@Doodlebug000 right you deny all the science for the past 100 years based on no facts but the belief of a God who made every animal and some silly book written by some crazies in the desert. I prefer the rational approach but lets not get in a religious debate.
You did an amazing finding! Myrmarachne sp. are very difficult to spot, especially in a dense vegetation zone like the one you were filming. The one you found could possibly be a Myrmarachne japonica.
Anyway, I'm glad Bob suggested e this clip because it is amazing! Congratulations!
@MrChrysops Thank you for watching and sharing your knowledge and thoughts regarding this spider. You are so correct in noting that it seems difficult to video tape or photograph this spider. The two previous encounters I have had were brief as the spider was moving incessantly and quickly escaped into deeper foliage. I guess that it was luck that this particular spider was resting while feeding. Thank you again and thanks as well to Bob for the nice recommendation. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)
WOW I've never seen such a creature like this. I've seen spiders mimic other insects though not an Ant. Very Cool you came upon this. Auspicious almost now that you've been giving Bob Props too. Congratulations on the find & Video footage Kurt.
@FeileCase This spider encounter was certainly special to me. It was fortunate that the spider was preoccupied with it's meal and that the lighting was so nice. Thanks again for watching and commenting! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)
ohh i found one at my house and I thought it was an ant. When I picked it up, I realized that it was a spider and i freaked out :/ I don't like spiders...
That is really neat! Amazing how that lil fella was so comfortable with you and your camera. Even more amazing how it just climbed on your hand for a ride all the while having a meal. You must give off good vibes because as far as I know to date your have avoided potentially dangerous encounters with a shark, giant wasp, giant jumping spiders jumping at your head and some unknown beast bumping around in the dark forest!!!
Now that was absolutely priceless! I have never seen in persos a mimicing ant jumping spider, and your shots were so crisp and in focus! Very nice indeed, 5 star from me! You know there are only a couple of spiders that will eat ants, and you filmed one of them! Both orb weavers and jumperss and ground hunters avoid them like the plague and won't be bothered with them as they taste aweful! But this spider is equipped to run fast with the best ant, when they least expect it...dinner!
@BobCsAll Hello Bob. I'm so happy you enjoyed seeing this amazing little spider. Your videos have inspired me to keep a keen eye tuned to the ground and foliage in an effort to discover and share more about the spider and insect life in this part of the world. Thank you again for providing such an amazing channel and for being such a great teacher and inspiration to others! -Kurt :-)
@reymiland Thank you for this wonderful and very fitting contribution to the story of the little ant-mimic jumping spider. Your delightful poem has been added in info and annotations. Thank you so much! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)
@Cherushiix Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts about this amazing spider. And thank you for your nice words about my channel. I'm delighted to have the chance to share some of the images and experiences from the little corner of the world where I cal home. Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)
@Omegalux What an interesting and thought-provoking idea. There are many forms of mimic in nature with some examples being quite striking and startling. How deep might the rabbit hole of mimicry go? Are there mimics so perfect that we fail to recognize them at all? Might they be walking among us? Might we ourselves be a mimic of sorts (could the word “made in his image” be an important clue)? Fun thoughts! Have a great day! ~Kurt :-)

Wonder if the spider knows it's mimicking an ant, or just waves its front legs instinctively.
