It was a DIY music it was avant garde for its day and still is in many ways. I've seen nirvana live 91' Toronto Nevermind tour and I walked out before the last song. He was basically copying all the previous punk bands (both in music and style). It wasn't original and it sounded wussier than punk rock.

Dave Grohl is a great drummer. Krist Novoselic was a skilled bassist. Now Kurt.. I'l admit he wasn't really a guitar god in any case.
