The tubes fall out of the ear on their own after some time.
Their purpose is NOT to allow fluid to drain out of the ear, but to allow air to enter it (as the eustachian tube is blocked) in order to equalize the air pressure inside the ear and out.
i just realised i've had this operation done when i was a kid. the doctor gave me the tubes (grommets) and i didnt know what they were from. now i do lol. i was complaining about noises like 'steam engines' while i was trying to sleep. its only now i figured it was my heartbeat through my ear... fail. but it fixed it lol
What happens next? Do you keep the tube in your ear for the rest of your life or do they remove it. I can't imagine having a hole in your eardrum is good for you?? I guess the tubes there to let stuff out but then whats stopping stuff going in???
Myt doctor refused to do this. She told me "You're not a child so there really is no need for me to put tubes in your ears. the infection will get better on it's own." I wish that she had done this. It seems I'm always getting ear infections.. maybe this would help.
I've had this surgery twice on both ears, once when I was two and again when I was four. When I was six I had to have one of the tubes surgically removed.
So now I know what was going on while I was asleep! Interesting!
you get an ear tube in most cases when you have a middle ear infection (when you have a fluid build up behind your eardrum) and yes you might have had it done when you were 17 some adults even have had this done. but it is more common in children. i myself have had it done 5 times then another time to have them surgically removed because they got stuck for 10 years. the tube is supposed to release the fluid in they ear transmitbatch

How does ventilation help to cure the infection? I am just curious.
katieoler 2 years ago
It removes the fluid that has built up behind the ear drum that is causing the infection..
