  • It sounds as though she was trying to personalize the melody on the upper passages, but the result was a sort of pitchy mess. Otherwise, there is a genuinely classical feeling to the voice, and there is an obvious passion and respect for the music in her delivery. Raw material perhaps, but a hot mess, not a disaster.

  • She was not off pitch. Only on the highest notes it sounded a bit like it, but this is because her vocal position was not correct and she clenched her throat.

I think for someone with no classical education this was rather good. And she certainly has a beautiful voice. With some proper classical training she has the potential to do much, much better!

  • My ears...they bleed... Ugh...sorry, Jewel, stick to pop or whatever it is you usually sing.

  • If you have never been taught to sing classical; don't freaking sing it. Damn.

  • o.O

  • Horrible, please stop!

  • I thought it was just me ... once again, being too judgmental ... until I began reading the other comments. And so, it REALLY IS as bad as I thought! (lol) Having come from a Pop background, I am now aware that it is REALLY ARROGANT of Pop Singers to think they can sing Classical standards, and do them justice, without studying the vocal techniques, and remaining true to the style and form. This is really arrogant, because it shows her ignorance regarding the genre. Oh well. She's famous ..

  • Gross. Sad that this is a first year vocal student piece and yet she's still paid to shit all over it.

  • @gilmerpotter:Check out her rendition of Per la gloria d' adorarvi. It's horrible!

  • oh dear god. please tell me this isn't real.

  • BRRRRRR!!! I AM FROZEN STIFF WITH HORROR! Suitable musical score for " Frankenstein"!

  • your name is jewel but your singing is just exactly like a shat! I could never imagine a worse singing ever! Don't even think of touching any classical music it is not for you.

  • i don't wanna hear the sound of her breath...... doesn't even know the basic of vocal....

  • very ugly, breathy high notes. she slurps in every breath, and there's no feeling/tone to the song. she has a very powerful voice, just not for this style.

  • What the shit? I want to set her on fire for this. No Jewel! Bad Jewel.

  • oh let US die lol...Jewel...come ON now

  • eeee she's barely hitting those notes and singing a completely different melody

  • Did she just sing lee instead of le it's an open e not closed O.O

  • What the heck.

  • God! This is awful! She's off-key almost as often as on. It sounds like a parody of a bad singer.

  • Jolie voix de soprano, mais il faut arrêter de chanter dans un micro, car c'est dommage pour les harmoniques. Beaucoup d'air dans la voix, mais ça se travaille. Allez, courage !

  • Now, to hear it done properly, listen to Anne Sofie von Otter. (over on the right)

  • Jewel. You failure.

  • Laaaaa-sciaaaaaa-te-keeyyychangeeee

  • That is the second unfortunate thing that happened to Arianna.

  • now.. i love jewel i think shes a wonderful singer but what the hell is this!!!

  • It hurts me physically to listen to this.

  • horrible!!! debes tomar clases de canto urgente!!

  • LOL I just flagged this for "repulsive content".

  • Oh. My. God. :-(

  • This is really awful... i sang this when i was at the begining of my carrer and it didnt sound that bad

    She should stick with pop

  • Truly dreadful, and painful, and embarrasing.

@.disbemissann: It is still TERRIBLE, too. Word:-)

  • I actually quite enjoy this. She has a beautiful range and vibrato.

  • fuck se pazo de lanza

  • congratulations!

  • So what guys. Let her sing! Does it really matter about the technicality. It's art and she's making it.

I look forward to links to your versions. I''ll enjoy them regardless, esp moreso if you've had fun making them.

    Woof!

  • So what guys. Let her sing! Does it really matter about the technicality. It's art and she's making it.

    Woof!

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. Its actually kind of funny. Even more hilarious that she tries to mask terrible intonation with ridiculous vibrato.... Haha!

  • very dislikable!!!!!!!the perfect word for this video?UNUPLOADABLE!

  • wow, what a mess.

  • What is this supposed to be?!

  • OUCH!!! ouch ouch ouch! my word, my ears are bleeding a little bit...

  • She's joking here, right? Those flat and sharp notes out of place are deliberate for comedy, right? The off lyrics, well, okay,,but the off timing, phew. Good thiing it's a capella, She should stick to her money music in public and leave this sort of stuff for the shower. Sweet voice, but ....when someone is famous and makes big bucks you sort of expect them to be better than the people who pay to see and hear them do things. I think this is a put on..

  • Why people always try to show off with opera? The voice is not bad, but i can't hear any music, just someone showing off....

  • My God, that was bad...

  • let her die so we'll be relief!

  • Fuori !!!

  • I disagree with all the people. Its not an easy piece to sing. And although it is not really good, it could be a lot worse. But I hear a lot of potential...

  • @Schokoladentoertchen As someone who sang this piece very early on in his singing career, I can safely say it's a pretty easy piece and Jewel just sucks.

  • @3DAperture I lol'd

  • @Schokoladentoertchen It is actually a VERY easy piece, and with her range, it should be cake. This is clear proof that Jewel has had no formal classical training, and when you have not, you should NOT sing classical pieces. It just makes you look bad. She's had a singing career for over a decade. She should have known this.

  • Lo dico anke io "Lasciatemi morire, ke volete, ke mi conforti !"

  • Lo dico anke io "Lasciatemi morire, ke volete, ke mi conforti !

  • I die. a lot.

  • she sucks

  • I have heard it done much worse. She needs some lesson, though.

  • awful.

  • gosh dang! please if you are going to do classical stuff please do it right!!

  • oh my lands. What is this?

  • This is really bad. Damn Jewel!

  • ouch....jewel apparently has no sense of pitch. She is off.....

  • Jewel needs to stick to folk. That was terrible. Go listen to Sofie Von Otter.

  • The lyrics apply to me now after I heard this.

  • you have so many other postings where you sing wonderfully so why on earth is this here on youtube??? It is terrible and does you no justice whatsoever!! From your other postings, you can certainly sing but this is just not for you, your voice, your technique. Take it off youtube and promote the other wonderful postings that you have!

  • oh my god

  • oh my god...

  • Ouch

  • what key is she in?!!!ouch.

  • i could shot by myself xD

  • omg what was she thinking? this is horrid!

  • grässlich!!!!

  • Pazzesco.

  • Lol! :) Well...some voices are just made for what they are made for....

  • Grauenhaft! Mehr sag ich dazu nicht!

  • Jesus Christ from Nazareth, help that girl!

  • Oh. My. God.

  • oh my god why is this up??? jewel can sing her pop nicely but leave the opera to people who can do it! puleeeeez!!!!!!

  • listen to that inhalation at :10 ! Good God, Girl maybe blow your nose before going on stage. you can hear, though, her potential, her talent...unfortunately, it's pretty much at a freshman undergrad level. Yikes, Baby.

  • Absolutely dreadful caterwauling

  • BLEAH!!!

    Di cattivo gusto!!!

    Poor Monteverdi!

    INASCOLTABILE!

  • Well it's always nice to have people state but never illuminate their criticisms. She is a pop/indie rock singer and that piece is baroque, almost renaissance, and 100's of years old. It's painfully obvious that she didn't get any vocal training for it and if she did then the vocal coach should be shot!!! I love Jewels singing voice in her element, its very soothing, but this just left me non plussed!

  • I confirm, this is TERRIBLE

  • WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO??

    Sorry, Jewel. You suck

  • omg Jewel ur crazy in the good sense of the word...my sister just throw with a pancake at me...guess she didn't like it:)))...GJ :)

  • @SeAnMcKinley23

No shit. Worst rendition I've EVER heard in my entire life. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

  • i don't think it ended on the key that it started in..

  • @b0ttomzone

There's a key change in the music. Still, she sucks.

  • @rottencat240 Well there is a brief pull to the dominant minor, just before a half cadence on the V/V, the last internal cadence, but I wouldn't call that a key change. I'd say for the whole work, the ear will accept d minor as the tonic, even in the prolonged dominant harmonies of the opening bars, which resolve to d minor at the first cadence point.

Of course, this rendition lacks a continuo, which would help solidify tonal functions, as well as Jewel's intonation.

  • @b0ttomzone On second thought, I don't mean to belittle the modulation to a. It does last a bit longer than just "a brief pull." For a few bars, we do hear a minor as the tonic. But it is a very closely related key, and still contributes to the overall tonal function of d minor. I think Jewel wanders off into some more remote keys..

  • @rottencat240

Um, no. There isn't. I'm looking at it right now.

  • :( omg!

  • If you ask my opinion you need to stay away from opera and Italian

  • and I thought her book of poems was bad

  • OMG?? Every mistake you can imagine....she has it.

  • My poor ears!!!!

  • It's well sung, with appropriate vibrato indeed, though not entirely corresponding to the compostion as it is known. Still, a fine achievement since this is difficult to sing without accompaniment. In popular music, more potential for classical has been shown(for instance, Joan Baez's 'Swing low, sweet chariot') and to me such experiment is well appreciated, for it examplifies where voices from different worlds may lead.

  • @Besnorki

Kermit the Frog could sing this better than her.

  • This is just about the funniest thing I've seen on Youtube is ages! Who is this woman?

  • She needs to practice alot more !

  • omg, what´s that???

  • Poor Monteverdi!!, please, you cannot do an exculpture with all kinds of stones..

  • 100% terrible

  • Ew ew ew ew I know. Leave the classical songs to the people who have been training for 15 years people!!!

  • Whoa... This is making my ears bleed... She changed keys 15 times.. just overall bad.. omg.. the key changes.. holy.. ew...I had to sing this for solo/ensamble.. I would fail her.. *Sounded 238028502759023750 times better* Just.. ew.

  • *Edit and yes..she failed the lyrics horribly.. God.. listening to it again.. she just failed the whole thing. In cosi *DURA* sorte.. then GRAN martire.. Lasciate MIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!! <- Dying cat. She put..an indian inflection in it..theres too many problems to count. Someone let me know when she learns how to sing in the same key through a song;)

  • yuck. tinyacrobat... I think you probably put it really well... minus the cuss word, but it does proves a point and she probably didn't even know what lascietemi morire meant when she was singing it. She screwed up the lyrics too.

  • ha ha ha ha .. died laughing

  • Of course, my favorite part was the key change. Wait, gimme a minute, i have to choose from from the four that she made randomly.

  • nice key change?! there were about 4 keys!!! X(

  • beautiful voice, but destroyed the aria.

    awful.

    really.

  • lol

  • right now, lasciatemi morire after hearing this shit. EW.

  • nice key change : /

  • which key?? lol

  • Oh my Lord, what horsecrap!

  • Très jolie voix, formée sûrement beaucoup au micro, par contre.

  • Wow. Not even close.

  • Some people just suck ass! Awful voice. Monteverdi is puking in his tomb!!

  • ROFL aw man, lol. she's otherwise a good vocalist but she's super pitchy here. didn't they give her the sheet music to follow? =( operas just not her thing. && she kept putting gran in the wrong spots. Learn the lyrics && notes <3

  • It'supposed to be a famours aria by Monteverdi.......and I agree with lucaf , this is a fantastic shit, terrible !!

  • but... what is this SHIT ????

  • Oh no, who allowed this?

At least she's got her eggs, got her pancakes too. Got her maple syrup, everything but classical technique.

  • Good Lord!

  • Wrong notes.....terrible

  • my word, this is TERRIBLE.

  • "Lasciatemi morire" is the sentiment I had after listening to this.

  • ok. we let you die.

would you finish then? (lasciate mi morire = leave me to dye)

    :D

  • This is so Awesome!!! Whenever I have a bad voice lesson, I come listen to this and thank God I don't sound like this

  • ROFL

  • Aw poor girl

  • This makes me die a little on the inside.

  • This is beyond awful!

  • MY ears!!! they hurt!!!!!

  • aah stop the singing!!

  • ascoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  • UGH!!!!!!!!! I agree with you

  • Comment removed

  • Pick a pitch please!!!

  • oh my god!!!! what a disaster!!!!! :-)

  • Ouch! I was listening with the earphones.

But anyway, she has tried a lot of haircuts.

  • This is plain AWFUL! No technique whatsoever, italian pronounciation sucks, and major flaw at 1:46.. Jewel, stick to yodeling and "normal" singing, and please, please stop ruining great classical pieces..

  • It's flat, heavy breathing, sharp, and sounds like she ItaliEnglised it. No pronunciation, just... eh. My ears. -cringes-

Monteverdi is turning over in his grave, just 1:46.... 0_0

She's got a voice, but, please, just don't get her to sing Monteverdi. Ever again XD

  • blasphemous

  • OH MY GOLD. Ma stai zitta. Scrivo il commento in italiano perche' se lo facessi in inglese avrei scritto un poema. Bleh.

  • How many times could she modulate??? My blood pressure went up just listening to this. I think I'll kill myself now.

  • Ye Gods, she is most certainly taking the title of the song seriously, I'm surprised she didn't pass out with all that heavy breathing in between.

  • That is the best comment i have ever seen! :)

  • There's quite a lot to be said for having some actual training and stylistic coaching before having the nerve to perform something like this. There's a reason why classical singers train. Because it's not as easy as pop, as this wretched bastardization of this aria proves. I like Jewel when she's singing her own music, but until she gets some classical training and learns something about Early Baroque style, she needs to stay away from this repertoire.

  • Oh, come on. It's not any worse than any other undergraduate voice major. Intonation problems, totally inappropriate style, but the voice itself is pretty enough. If it helps get people interested in classical music and hearing what it's supposed to sound like, I'm okay with it.

  • argh

  • q asco

  • O God.... that was the worst singing I have ever heard!!

  • Terrible! I sang this betteras a 15 year ols school girl. it is a tough song to pull off, but she's exposed very flaw in breath work, phrasing adn pitch by being unaccompanied.

  • This was horrible! She should stick to country! This was absoulutley Horrid

  • did she just completely change this song into a major key?!

  • My god how ugly

  • Desafinado

  • Oh! Maybe it's the recording, or maybe it's just Jewel. Sorry, I couldn't take more than a minute of this caterwauling.

This performance gives credence to the idea that the aria was actually written in early Italinglish _about_ Jewel, with the text, "Las siat a-me, ma rier, e," which translates (as you can tell, if you read it with a heavy Italian accent) as "Hey, the lass shot me in the ass."

  • love it :)

  • lmao XD

  • One of my favorite arias...or, it USED to be. Sorry, Jewel, not right for you.

  • Qué cosa tan fea!!!

  • Bau!

  • Its a pitty, but she made it totally wrong. its awful. It hurts the ears when we listen to it. She has her qualities but this song is not appropriate to her.
