early 80's phone call I got at my Leamington, Ontario radio station, wanted to know if I wanted to audition to mc Scene produced dance show on Canadian side of border in Windsor (trying to capitalize on the white kids i'm guessing).,,smart play when I heard it then,,,but, never got follow up phone call,,,never saw any show of that kind in weeks, months, years later, so it wasnt meant to be.
'sugar is sugar, salt is salt, if you didnt get off today, its not our fault'
I learned of this show through watching old soul train clips. I'm from NYC so never heard of The Scene before watching the clips. I did stay in Detroit for a few months back in 98!~
Wow! Memories...born and raised in Motown, knew several of the girls who danced on the show (not nearly as well as I would have liked to know them-but I knew them). This was thee show in the 80s in Detroit! Did you get off today?
Worked at Burroughs...We'd watch it every night & every morning, me & my friend Catrina would rehash everything that happened on The Scene the night before. The best show. Lawanda was my favorite.
I just watched an old episode of Soul Train, well not the whole thing, but you can tell The Scene and New Dance Show was raw dance talent. Real deal! Soul Train looked almost like a rehearsed Broadway show, over choreographed. Fast Freddie, Lawanda, and the rest of the crew Ya'll are Detroit's celebrities. This should have been nationwide as well as Soul Train or just took over. WGPR was B.E.T. before they were.
To who think The Scene was the first dance show in Detroit, YOU'RE WRONG!!! There was a dance show called The Sign Of The Zodiac which piloted The Scene by WGPR in Detroit, back in the early '70's. If anyone knows about this hit me up with a comment.
@MrGreene313 yo We used to Watch it everyday in Willow Run, THose were the best days for Us all in Detroit, Inkster, highland park, ypsi, the Run, all of Detroit. Its only a Detroit thing no one will understand it. Even in Europe people want to come to Detroit to party to our Techno. DETROIT WHAT?!!
The scene was it, Nat Morris is still the man!! He is in Detroit still doing his thing. Nat put the show on cd and sell it!! Im still looking for Shiela Frost and Yvonne Gooden. What are they doing today. Funkateers, Sharivari, Man that was it!!
I'm one of the lucky ones. I saw the Scene the very first day it aired! I actually first aired in November 1975 and we watched almost everyday until the end. Great show, great dancers, great host, great guests, great memories, GREAT DETROIT!!!!
..everybody's clean..it's 6 oclock, and time for 'The Scene'..
ch. 62 always 'must viewng' over the river here in Canada...
**was radio d'jing down there in the early 80's..got a call from one of their producers to host some 'scene' ch62 vehicle (supposedly over in canada)..though nothing came of it though
as Nat said: sugar is sugar, salt is salt,,if you didnt get off today..its not our fault.
"Blow Your House Down" was recorded by A Guy Called Gerald (not 'George'). And the "I'm gonna dis you right now" song was "100% of Disin' You" by Armando, a Chicago house legend.
xenotech A boy called George (yep that was the artist name) made "Blow your house down" if I am correct, I had that album and use to spin it when I DJed for a hobby. Also hooperxxx I think you are trying to find "I'm gone Diss you right now"..I had that one too but I forgot who made that one.
I was on back in early to mid-80s and often danced with Superman/Clark Kent (Ed). People sometimes called me "the other white girl" because Mary Lu was on first. People thought we were "arch" enemies but Mary Lu and I were (and still are) friends. Great to see this stuff.
and 1982 This was the Prince and Morris day era. Boy where we wild back then,,,, I work at bank of the common wealth on fort st and griswold and would go down to the the Scene on thursdays and fridays. Lawanda do you remeber me. And donna do you remeber me,, I remeber the pretty panty contest you one and I pick you up in that 1979 lincoln. WOW what a time we had.
My name is Daphne and I was one of the original regular dancers ('76-'79) on "The Scene". For many years I tried to bury that part of my life. It was very difficult for a teenage girl to handle the attention. However, Detroit and this show gave me the confidence to branch out and see the world. I had no idea we were a part of Detroit/Black Media History. Thanks Nat
Wow...the memories of our fair city. Detroit was so fun, and little did we know that The Seene would be an icon of pop culture. I was talking with my kids about Cheryl Peoples winning with her partner, also from Det. whose name escapes me, and got linked to this site from another. This is great. Can't wait to share. My friends are all over the world, but this is one thing that we can all wax nostalgic about...the dance scene in the D!
Oh man, this brings back memorys! I was in the Rap-a-dance contest back in the 80's. We got beat by that dancing Gumby dude. If any one has more videos please post. I have to show everyone here in Dallas!
omg, thanks for posting this video. me and my siser were talking about the scene not to long ago. this takes me back to childhood rushing home to watch the scene everyday. i remember lawanda, fast freddy, andre hines, ben west, cheyrl people, nat morris, and many others. thanks for posting this video.
I love coming back to this video to look for new responses and possible leads to more clips. I was also one of the few white chicks to dance on The Scene. I started watching it in 1982 and was blown away by the music. I knew I HAD to be on that show.
I was the really tall white girl... as tall as Lawanda. My trademark was wearing one black leather glove, LOL. Oh man - great stuff.
Wow! This takes me back. Having lived right across the road on E. Lafayette. I can remember passing WGPR so many times and seeing the dancers heading in to do the show as well as spotting them around the city. This really makes me miss Detroit. Thanks for posting this up!
How could I forget Fast Freddie! He was our idol back then. He is a buddy of mine now. He use to work as a club photographer up on E. 7 Mile. This is incredible reminiscing sitting here in New York City now.
Oh my God! I just found this! I also watched the Scene everyday on Channel 62 and I was living in Toledo! Nat Morris, R.J. Watkins, "the booty cam" the dancers! This is prominent memory from my teenage years! Thanks big time for sharing this.
Sugar is sugar, salt is salt, if you didn't get off, its not our fault!!!I miss The Scene and the hold vibe. I was five when my family moved to Detroit in '81. The Scene helped my sisters and brother get our dance move together.
I was a dancer on The Scene from 1976-1982 they called me Mr.Robot. Other dancers from my Scene era are Lenny Turner, Cheryl peebles, Michella Brown Cheryl griffin Bobby, Denise Fry, bubble-up, Lawanda Grey, Fonzi, lorenzo went on Soultrain and American Bandstand. Cheryl and Bobby won the $100.000 grand prize on Dance Fever...........Wow the memories...................Mark Williams
...That just gose to show how dangerous Detroit was in the dance scene...for them to go out to Cali (Soul Trains turf) and win like that. I actually remember seeing that also.
This is great, I was one of the few white girls but I had a partner, Kriko - he was very memorable, white guy with get black hair, slicked back - hunkie (80's term, I had no idea what I was doing, I would love to see video - I saw my head in one of the shots. Great times - the clothes, look at the ladies, the dresses were down to our knees, more class then what's up these days - looking forward to seeing more of The Sceeeene ...
African EZ Silk is The Exclusive Line of Imported Professional hair and skin care products. Order your supplies on line by e mail,(see title) or call the number on the video.

I got some of these old episodes on VHS...Those were the days. I remember when the ladys wore clothes on the videos and dance shows...my my my how times have changed....
Any more footage of the Funkateer Dancers. Like the time they danced at Harts Plaza in the early 80's. Talking about jamming!! I never to this day seen anything like it.
this aint shit but a knock off ass soul train which like errthang else started in chicago but i thought dances was posed 2 git bettah not fall off, d-town yall need 2 bring this back
The version by "Was (not was)" sounds completely different from the version played on 'The Scene.' The "Was (not was)" version sounds very 70's disco. The Scene version sounds early 80's Detroit techno. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Please help, I'm dying to try and track The Scene's version down! Many thanks from a former Scene dancer, 1983-1984.
That is the Ozzy Osbourne version of "Shake Your Head" from the Born To Laugh At Tornados CD. There was a version that featured Madonna--you may be thinking of that. it got airplay, but was pulled from the release when she got more well-known.
BLESS YOU axecollector! Now, if I could ask one more "name that tune" question. At the 2:57 mark when the camera starts panning Lawanda from the bottom up - ending at the 3:02 mark - do you know what the name of that song is? I can't understand the two words sung by the artist. It's another techno treasure.
the news story never mentioned Cheryl Peeples. she was the greatest dancer and went to Dance Fever and won $10,000 with Lorenzo. Living in Detroit in the early 80's was an incredible experience
I remember Cheryl. She was incredible. I was one of three white female dancers. The woman that coordinated the dancers and chose the ones she liked best. She didn't like me much, hehehe...scandelous times, lots of fun, lucky to get out of alive. ;-)
I've been looking for a video from The Scene for ages! I was a dancer from 83-85. It was CRAZY. I knew Lawanda. Lots of fun, dangerous times, hehehe. Stringz, THANK YOU for posting this! Wish I could find more and see me dancing! I remember when Vanity 6 came on the show and George Clinton. After the taping we'd go to Medusa's to party.
...Finally, footage to the original Funkateers and the OG old jitt originated by the Errol Flynns and BK's. Pure history on this vid. Thanx Strings !!!
Thank you Stringz! My brothers taped The Scene, so they could scope-out the honeys. Fast Freddy is a friend and still dancing, do you know his GQ spread was six pages long?
thank you for posting, i loved this show

keepthapinit 4 years ago
...Theres actually some truth to that. Alot of the dancers (poppers) from back in the day started male dancing after popping/locking died out.

Any more footage of the Funkateer Dancers. Like the time they danced at Harts Plaza in the early 80's. Talking about jamming!! I never to this day seen anything like it.

therealPeilo 4 years ago
Not EVEN comparable! The Scene is a Detroit legend and The New Dance Show couldn't touch it.

maybe the scene started it, but the new dance show put the jit on the map for all, including this whiteboy, but then again so did 1333 e forest. ;-)

What is the song that's played at the three minute mark, where it shows Lawanda dancing for the first time?
secondchapter 5 years ago
I remember the Funkateers. They are a local group from Pontiac, Mi. This was during my brothers dancing days.
I knew the group from that signature Funkateer dance step.

It's another techno treasure.

the song is by Planet Patrol (I didnt know I loved U)

the news story never mentioned Cheryl Peeples. she was the greatest dancer and went to Dance Fever and won $10,000 with Lorenzo. Living in Detroit in the early 80's was an incredible experience
PhuckHue 5 years ago

Wow. Seems like another lifetime ago.
