  • This is definitely the best version. The leadguitar is superb.

  • tHiS iS sO aWeSoMe.LiKe WoW mAn!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!

  • This is the only version I've ever known.. Ima listen to the other one ._.

  • jajaj se olle bien natural como debe de ser

  • Sorry! I just love Airplane/Spaceship, but the Slick version beats Airplane into a cocked hat, and that's no mean feat. I just love Darby Slick's playing, why in 'God's name did they bugger off to India to learn sitar? They could have been enormous.

  • "When the truth is found to be lies and all the joy within you dies" and "Well you know the garden flowers are dead and your mind is full of bread"

I love this song for its dark lyrics and Graces sarcastic delivery. So much for peace and love.

Certainly not hippy dippy happy crap. Grace Slick is brilliant in this recording and i really like the band too

  • She made it sounds really better with Jefferson Airplane! It can be the original, but the Jefferson Airplane's version is much better...

  • best version...i was looking for this for some time

  • Just the very best version of the song....... great memories of the 60s before life got complicated

  • I agree with others that this is the best version of this song.Grace's vocals are simply amazing!

  • So many nights on the floor, I was so glad to have been with them, all of us had a great time...Love...John

  • Not really the first version. That honor would go to the 45 rpm single released by them on the North Beach label, and posted elsewhere on YouTube as "Someone to Love", which is what the record company called it on the label, recorded in Novermber, 1965 and released in February 1966.

The track posted here was informally taped the following June by the owners of the Matrix Club and was not released until 1968.

  • original and the best ............

  • What's beautiful about this original version is there's such intensity & elements of protopunk edginess, that's just, WOW,MAN!!!! I can listen to this version a million times

& have my mind blown to INFINITY! An incredible blueprint of what would become no less

than a masterpiece for Jefferson Airplane. A PURE GEM.....REAL ROCK & ROLL.

  • Love both versions, but this one has a great dirge-y, chant-y feel that makes it distinctive. Darby's guitar work is always a treat, as is Grace's great singing here. Thanks for posting.

  • Excellent

  • I always liked this version better than the Airplane's, probably because its very under-engineered, and the guitar solo is so bad its good!

  • this broads voice is worse than running nails across a chalkboard

  • perfect song!!

  • Grace is my god!

  • I'm surprised youtube has the original.

  • much better than the airplane version

  • I dropped last summer and it turned me on back to a hippie again.............. oh wow......

  • I truly like it -not just for the thrill of discovery but also because it is the germ of an idea ,the "a ha" moment if you like - along the way to the realization of the song's potential..

  • Love it so much!

    Grace<3

  • Before the Jefferson Airplane, was the Great Society. If Paul had not met Grace, then there may have never been a Jefferson Starship or Starship band, but JA would have continued with Signe, another super female singer, but in my opinion, next to Nancy Wilson, of Heart, Grace Slick was the greatest female rock vocalist of that era! Just my humble opinion?

  • To me this version sounds sort of Quick Silver-ish. I like it, but does anyone agree with me?

  • Yo dawg grace slick had no talent ke$ha pwns her Yo

  • OMG I HAD THIS ALBUMN LOVED IT SO F...IN MUCH ANGEL

  • This is nice ,but comes off as rather thin ,tinny in comparison to the generational /cultural anthem like call to arms the song became when rearranged released by The Jefferson Airplane. Grace's energies together with,Kantner,Balin,Cassady,Kaukonen,Dryden just reached critical mass.

  • @DaDa2Phlux

thats just because the airplane one was more produced.

The Airplane was better, but this is nice!

  • tey were just a bunch of emo faggots

  • @bieberfanatic123 I wouldn't expect a better comment from someone whose username is bieberfanatic.

If you don't like their music, don't listen to it. Idiot.

Oh, and I love Grace Slick, and I like this version better..though I love the Jefferson Airplane version as well. <33

  • grace slick sings melasmatically

  • Great song, thanks for uploading!

  • Interesting and not bad. But I think the Airplane blows this out of the water. Slick's voice is too much for the Great Society; the Airplane has tons of junk going on, but Grace delivers enough moxie to swing with it. That's why the Airplane's version was (and still is) such a stunner; everybody's on full throttle.

And it's always good if your girl singer is a model, even better if she can sing.

  • This song is touching my herat, my mind and my soul

    an't stop listen it...

  • I remember reading that Darby Slick, who wrote the song, said that it was meant as a sad song and that was they way the GS played it.

  • i like this kind of music, lifestyle,....mmmmm- Me hubiera gustado vivir mi juventud en esta buenisima época de los 60 like a hippie, love and peace :D and get my boyfriend :)

  • WoW!

  • Man I totally wish I could lived in the 60's or at least witnessed it! I like both versions of this song, because you still get the true meaninng of it in both.

  • I think every version of this tune is wonderful, up until the Starship coporate-days-hell. But we won't go there. Obviously this one is more folkie based in its roots. It's also the most 'gentle' version lyrically and rhythmically. It asks one to 'ponder' giving love rather than just receiving it, or not, at all. JA's version prods one with a stick, 'warning' us to give love and not just receive, or not, before it's too late for our selfish souls.

  • Hm, in comparing JA with the Great Society, there is no comparison! Jorma and Jack can play circles around these guys. As far as dragging Grace down, Jorma didn't get into heroin until way after leaving JA. Grace was a absolute drunk.

  • Wow!

    Never heard this before.

    Awesome!

  • this version is great, & her voice is mesmerizing

  • Comment removed

  • Both versions of this song are excellent!

  • nice, but just like the early version of White Rabbit, it sounds unrefined. Smooth though, and enjoyable. The stint with Great Society was pretty good, even though they never really released any definite hits.

  • Groovy Man .... I never get tired of listening to this song. Thanks for uploading it !

  • love her voice!!!

  • Have always liked this version much more than the Airplane's...thanks for posting...

  • So glad Grace dumped this POS band , and went with the Airplane..

  • @Joel2Dope Another opinion is that JA was a bunch of talentless junkies who dragged down Grace in the sewer and ruined her. The only two songs JA are known for, were created by this band. Which you label POS, in my conviction just because the equipment and recording is more spartan than you're used to.

  • Very groovy version

  • Great version. It's a shame a few wannabe internet gangsters insist on polluting the comments with negativity. But still. Love Grace Slick!

  • Hmmm..Jefferson Airplane's version is more upbeat but this,it really holds its own.I adore Grace's voice so much!!!

  • You both need somebody to love.

  • This version is just fucking brillaint!

  • Help me out here folks: comments from some - on many postings - include the word 'prolly'. I though I new slang terms but that's a new one on me - what does it mean? Is it just something used in the USA?

  • 'prolly is used in this forum instead of probably

  • So it's "I can't spell that word so I'll make up a new one"? Smashed out of our heads in the 60's we could at least read and write our own language!

  • it has nothing to do with a persons inability to spell...it has more to do partly with laziness..and in most cases on the internet people tend to abbreviate things. like LOL..or OMG... The children of the sixties may have been able to read and write...but accomplished nothing except to pass on the drug culture to the next generation..and all the free love bs got us was herpes and aids...thanks a lot!

  • This is damn good!

  • this is so different than i'm used to hearing it, wow, i like it :)

  • 4:19 woooooou qué belleza... desearía poder cantaar esa parte.

  • she was just beautiful 3:17......i would have loved to love her ; ]

  • man i love this song i'm a big fan of the 60s and chicano music of the 60s and 70s like santana malo these pshycadelic and chicano rock bands of back then where so kick ass music today sucks ....

  • I agree, I love her voice too! She was

    so special!

  • BIG FAN of Grace Slick....l love her voice....she was awesome....wish i could of seen her sing live....born in the the 70's..

  • I saw Grace and JA in concert and was center stage front not more than 5 feet away. A night I will not ever forget . Grace was a Fox back then !!

  • REALLY....man that is awesome....I love her....i could listen to her all day...been to a lot of concerts and everytime i go to one....I always say.....wish this was Grace Slick....lol...:)

  • Don't you?

  • Such a beautiful voice. I am 52 yo and loved her voice for all of my years. Her voice stands out more with this version (Great Society) than with Jefferson Airplane versions.

  • im 17 and i love her voice

  • I'm thirteen, and Jefferson Airplane is my favorite band. Why aren't there more people like us?

  • cause they r all listening to rap crap and pop slop. u have good taste in music; most people don't.

  • well rap is what you hear on the radio... but hiphop is what you here underground...

  • Your explanation is faulty. Hiphop is the culture which includes: rapping, graffiti, breakdancing and turntablism.

  • that all started underground... that is the real hiphop that is long gone in the mainstream media. Now you see cats like lilwayne and souljaboy who only rap about how much money they have... Its sad... you ever heard of mf doom??? madlib??? flying lotus???

  • of course I have heard of them, I almost listen to nothing else, in my opinion Madvillainy is the hiphop-album of the decade! Cats like Lil' & Soulja boy are like you say wack as hell. There is still some real hiphop shit out there, we just need to look harder than we used to.

  • word! see you know wazup! madlib and lotus get down with the beats. True connuosiers of music hands down! I also love jeffersons airplane and all the 60s and 70s bands. Just the sound is so authentic but far out at the same time! now a days its just so plain and dull... Every pop artist sounds the same man! Its ridiculous! and i agree. Its getting harder and harder to find... But its out there!!!

  • man..go talk that negro shit somewhere else

  • Do the world a favor and never speak a word again! There are enough idiots as it is!

  • eat shit and bark at the moon you moolie bastard...go speak your ghetto rap shit somewhere else...this is a video of an actual band with talent...we don't want to hear about niggers with attitudes here

  • Ow please, don't act all tough on the internet, I know the JA is (was) an actual band with talent that's why I was looking them up on youtube you dimwit. But your ignorance and complete lack of knowledge about hiphop is laughable. You judge the book by it's cover, if you would know something about "nigger-music", you would know there is good hiphop, if you don't like the genre I don't care but don't lambaste against it when you are ignorant!

  • I don't have to act tough bitch...

  • You don't like hiphop but you do talk like some ghetto-thug for sure.

  • How does knowing that I can beat the ever loving shit out of you sound like ghetto thug? Do you have fear of the black man syndrome? I have 19 yrs of Ko Sutemi Seiei Kan training..I can back my words up.

  • Come and visit me when you are in belgium, let's put it to the test. Now I'm going to ignore you, because you are an utter imbecile.

  • Comment removed

  • anytime..pussy

  • i will be in Ireland for the AKJU Irish Cup this summer...I hope we can meet there!

  • @deerhunter45628 how can u listen to this great music and be a racist?

    fuck you!

  • your point almost makes sense but nigger is racist. its a racial slur of negro, which means black. its kind of like calling a mexican a spick, or a french a pepper. I'm french but I don't take offence to any wording, thats child's play.

only people who are immature take words like that personally. its a shame so many do.

nevertheless this is an amazing song.

  • actually nigger is bigotry..racism is something completely different..lol

racism: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race (Source: Merriam-Webster dictionary)

  • @deerhunter45628

    bigotry (plural bigotries)

The characteristic qualities of a bigot; intolerance or prejudice, especially religious or racial.

Members of the Ku Klux Klan practiced extreme bigotry.

  • KKK:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  • regardless..there are some blacks in society totally deserving of the word..

  • @deerhunter45628

More to the point, you deserve the the word MORON!!!!!!

  • because you need to show them the good music so they know, also kids always want to hear whats the latest thing or latest movie, just look how everyone needs to rent the latest film meanwhile their are millions of films in the past they never seen

  • people dont understand what good music is any more.

  • @ladidah9 I am here, but i am a nerd, now.

  • @ladidah9 There's millions of us, it's just that we're kindof ------ older...

  • @ladidah9 what?

  • Very prophetic message concerning the lies of the church and the truth of god's word!

  • really explain????

  • Wow que clasico casi lloro.........

  • ¿Has oido "High Flying Bird" en Monterey? Me impresiona mucho la potencia de voz de Grace Slick....

  • Hey gracias por el dato buscare el tema

    saludos

  • I love the version with JA, I love this version also. A win win situation:).

    Thanks for posting hawkmoon0311951.

  • If thats from 'Great Society - Collectors Item' then I think that the version of 'White Rabbit' is pretty good too.

  • absolutely incredible.

the 60's was the best decade in history, never to be recreated. R.I.P psychedelic 60's. :(

  • Yes!

The 60's did marked a turning point; the mass inclination to consciousness expansion began in earnest, mixed in with the great threat of self-immolation by way of WMD

Of course you were prolly too 'stoned' and 'high' to appreciate the uneasy mix of much 'light' and 'dark clouds' simultaneously. lol

  • @theshmorgz the 60's ARE the best time of rock history, all come from this and the sixties never died

  • @theshmorgz who says it can't be repeated, there is a whole generation of us waiting for the time to come

  • I'd like it if it weren't live, it kind of ruins the vibe for me. Are any of these Grace Slick/Society performances on CD?

  • There is a studio version of somebody to love, but it's awful, the live version is a million times better, darby slick said he didn't think it was a very good take even (He wrote it)

  • shes so damn good so friggin delicious she made herself that and i love her for this you kick it grace gbu

  • Wow not as tight as Jefferson but I love the raw sound.

  • better than the popular version. grace slick is the queen- no one else comes close - awesome video.

  • Don't I want somebody to love?

    x

  • I like this version more than the version of Jefferson Airplane, as White Rabbit. I think The Great Society was better than the Jefferson Aiplane.

  • @pauletaloca I have to agree, there is a "purity" in this version that isn't in the more popular Airplane version. I think it's because Grace's voice is so clear and emphasized as a "lead instrument" as it were.

  • @pauletaloca you're right !!

  • @pauletaloca totally agrees! this one is rawer and more tuneful, great garage feel

  • I've always liked this version; released on a double LP from tapes made at The Matrix, after the JA had a hit single with the song; the liner notes included an interview with Slick where she denied ever using LSD and made the claim Lewis Carol used opium.

    :)

More recently re-released on "San Francisco Nuggets"

  • Great classic love it!!! Thanks!!!
