  • Yes, it does take more time for a larger folder to be encrypted. I encrypted a 30 gb folder (don't ask whats in it) and it took 30 minutes

  • Great video, thank you very much! Can you help me in this too?

I accidentally did something to the disk for time machine back ups, so i couldn't save my back up on it. I found out a useful way of using that by transferring files between 2 users. But now, i want to decrease the disk's size so that i have more storage on my hard drive. I stupidly made it 130 gb. I want it to be 50 gb. How would i do that?

  • works on Lion PS.

  • Yeah you show that zoom who's boss.

  • thanks man, helped me a lot, now I can stop myself from deleting important files

  • Love it Thanks!

  • This is good and another good thing is to add a . in the beginning so nobody can even see your folder in the first place, only thing is that you are either going to need to show hidden folders or type in location using the CMD+SHIFT+G command to find it

  • @jlkill3r what is that a. then what ever you want it called or a . ?

  • Thanks for the video.. Very simple and to the point!

  • Thanks for posting the vid but in all honesty what an needlessly long way of doing it. Because Apple wants to oversimplify everything, something that you want to do that Apple hasn't decided you should do is needlessly long, and you can't save changes in a disk image. I want to password protect a folder of text work, so I'm supposed to create a new DMG every time? Pathetic Apple. Although this is from the dickheads who brought us Lion so...

  • Maybe I'm your neighbour.. Now I know your password o.O

  • Hi there, so I watched your video, and followed the steps, but now when I try to open the folder I created, nothing happens. I'll double click the dmg but nothing happens/opens up... Any help?

  • awesome thx man

  • @DavidAcampora thanks for the advice boss ^_^

  • So... what if the folder you want to delete is one that is apparently "required on a mac". For example, "pictures" is a folder that will not delete even if click on that folder's "get info" and then make sure that it's all set to "read/write" and the lock is unlocked... what do I do? Am I not going to be able to delete that one? Do I have to make a new folder, move all the files from the pictures folder to that new folder and then encrypt that new folder and then delete that new folder?

  • @goldensleeves If you wanted to encrypt your pictures folder, yes. You need to copy all of the files from you pictures folder into a new folder, encrypt the new folder, and delete all the files from your pictures folder. It'd be a good idea to do this on two separate drives, because you're essentially crunching all of those pictures (or files) into one file. If that file gets corrupted, you lose everything, so good idea to back up while you have everything all in one spot.

  • Why do you have to choose 128bit encryption? What does that mean exactly? It doesn't change the actual files within the folder, right? The "encryption" is only like a door to get to the files, right? The files aren't actually changed to something of lesser quality, right?

  • @goldensleeves Encryption is the just the strength of the security. Selecting other options would make it easier to crack the password. Has nothing to do with the files.

  • this video is great!!! really help me alot thanks for this i solve may problem with mac i have only one more problem left i hope anyone can help me out here

i want to share a folder in my mac the problem the people whole will going to open it are pc users and i need to put password so that only selected pc users can open my folder T_T many thanks in advance

  • @zoardyeck You might be better off using a web server like Dropbox. If you put the encrypted file inside of your public folder, the problem wont have anything to do with them being able to enter the password, but I think the PC users wont be able to read the files on a Mac-formatted drive. By uploading the files to dropbox, megaupload, etc., you can password protect and make the files translatable to any system.

  • can you add more files to an existing .dmg?

  • @rfal502 I would like to know that as well

  • @DavidAcampora can you still find the files through spotlight?

  • @MrTheJaav no

  • You should still "Get info" and set up all those limitations so that people can't throw it away! XD

  • lol, your bouncing program in the Dock made me think it was MINE. xD For a sec I was like wut? But then i realized the bouncing was happening in the vid lol.

  • ok dude every time a girl sends me pics iwanna put um in it but everytime it say not enough space!!!

  • It was great. Thank you !

  • 3 people aren't Patriots fans.

  • This didn't work for me. I followed all the steps exactly the way you said them but it still allows me to open it without any password.

  • @etanico I can almost guarantee you forgot to uncheck the box next to "Remember Password in Keychain." Try again, that step is at 2:19 and is very important.

  • Go Colts, bitch :3

  • great vid thnx for the help:)

  • Thanks for the tutorial!

  • Great tutorial. Exactly what Ive been looking for ! Thank you !

  • @MrJylangibbins Just Quicktime. You need to have the new version that comes with Snow Leopard. File > New Screen Recording.

  • how do you delete a protected folder once you've encrypted it? nice video btw

  • @pWnD550 You should be able to drag it to the trash just like any other file. It will ask you for your administrator password to confirm the deletion.

  • Useful vid. Thanks for posting it.

  • Thx! That really helped! I want a lock that I have my mac at my school:)

  • Great vid. Cheers for posting.

  • can you edit the data after it is a .dmg?

  • @halolord01 No, I don't believe so. Just copy the files into a new regular folder, edit as needed and repeat the steps to encrypt the new folder.

  • @DavidAcampora I was just testing out if that is possible. So long as you set it to read/write before mounting the image (which you did in the tutorial), all files can be edited, new files can be added, etc. and the changes will be saved even after ejecting the drive.

  • you can use imovie to edit screencapture/screenflow

  • can you tell me how to delete the folder i fucked up and now when i press empty trash it says its in use and cant be deleted totally? thanks.

  • @32jd32 Go to your trash and right click the file that you can't delete. Click "Get Info." Towards the bottom, make sure everything is set to Read & Write, and also ensure the lock is unlocked. Then delete the file again. You may need administrator privileges to complete the deletion.

  • @DavidAcampora thanks man your a lot of help i subbed!

  • Im only doing this for my porn! :D

  • @MrCDRipped Aren't we all!

  • @MrCDRipped LOL, all of us are perverts then xD

  • thanks alot, really good video :) subscribed :)

  • lol yes the bigger the folder the longer it takes

  • It makes a copy of the folder for me but doesn't password protect the original folder. WTH?

  • @LilyOpmac It isn't supposed to. You make the encrypted copy of the folder and then delete the original one.

  • thanks man

    great info

  • cool vid

  • nice wallpaper man!

  • dream theater, you sir, is captain awesome

  • very helpful. subscribed.

  • Yeah Patriots!

  • @DavidAcamporawhen i open the DMG it dose not ask for a password what should i do

  • @bobaethan You most likely forgot to select the "encryption" when you were creating the image. Try again, and under the drop down menu that says encryption, make sure you select 128-bit encryption.

  • @DavidAcampora - same here, I chose the 128 thing undder the encrypted pop up but it dont aske me for a password. Help!

  • Dude, this was insanely helpful!!!!

  • why don't you just go to "get info" and choose write only drop box and then click the lock button?

  • Thanks! = )

  • Oh man! Thank you so much, thank you!!!

  • It didn't allow me to create image. This is the dialogue I'm getting: "Unable to create 'test.' (user interaction required for authorization)

Then there is only an "OK" button- no explanation or option at all. How do I do the "user interaction" so that it gives me autorization? (I'm doing this from my administrator account in Snow Leopard).

    Thanks!

  • this was so completely helpful. thanks for being easy to follow.

  • Wow, awesome! Great help!!

  • "Yeah zoom....that's right" lol, good tutorial

  • Mac Hider is a nice alternative but it does cost money. Nice GUI interface though

  • this was ok, but it would be nice to be able to modify the folder contents on the fly without having to create a disk image everytime.

  • @avocadomilk I'm not in front of my computer right now, so I can't say for sure, but when you unpack the .dmg, I'm pretty sure you can hit cmd+i and set the permissions to read and write. That way you can copy files to and from the disk, and when you eject it, the password protected .dmg should update. I'll check for sure when I get a minute tonight.

  • @DavidAcampora didn't work for me

  • @matt9736 Can you be more specific?

  • I was listening to dream theater when I found this video xD

  • Hi! Will Snow Leopard allow you to delete a password protected file, even if you can't remember the password anymore?

    Thanx. Great vid :)

  • @jblackbath If you create a disk image as described in this tutorial, you will be able to delete the disk image without entering a password. If you want to protect a file from being deleted, you will have to go into the finder info and lock the file. This will require an administrator password before it can be deleted. Hope that helps!

  • damnnnnn good....fantastic work..keep it up

  • thx m8 really clear and straightforward tutorial

  • This helped. Thank you!

  • thanks!!! it's better than downloading a password protect software for folders... thanks again

  • Perfect job Dave. Thanks for the info. I had never thought about making a disk image from Disk Utility. Very nice video, simple to follow instructions. Oh and good choice with the Patriots haha. I would have chosen Bruins but I'm a hockey guy, what can I say? Very good though.

  • hey i made 1 locked folder of 8gb and want to tranfer file in it thats is of 4.22gb but unable to transfer its saying disk is full but in my hardisk still 40 gb is available..

plz tell me wht to do?

  • Here's the thing. When you use this technique, you are telling OSX that you want to create a virtual drive. Disk Utility creates the virtual drive the size of the files you originally put in it, meaning that nothing else could be copied onto the drive, ever. What I would do in this situation is open the password protected folder, copy all the files to another location like the desktop, and then use these files and the new ones to create another virtual drive. Get rid of the first one, done!

  • thank you..really nice work..

  • Nice and Clear, no silly distracting background music

    well done

    Thanks

    Red

  • @red7alien8 No problem. Thanks for watching.

  • clear and extremely helpful. thank you!
