Here is a cure for this situation. People will always burn there trees. So make 1 day a year and have everyone come to that beach with their tree and have a GIANT tree burning session. Supervised of course.
So many of the People Behaving Badly segments involves selfish [insert expletive(s)] leaving trash, dog crap, cigarette butts, hazardous waste and more. So many lack basic decency or responsibility. Pity.
I guess the obvious question is why are Christmas trees particularly illegal? Assume you've removed all the ornaments, tinsel, etc. and it's just a tree.
Christmas tree bonfires were once a tradition on Carmel beach. There is some kind of spiritual release there to close that stressful holiday season with a nice fire, and Christmas trees should burn REAL good.
Some things are just bad to do these days. Smoking, excessive eating, plastic bags and now burning the xmas season away.
Those Christmas trees sequestered carbon while taking in C02 during their growth...Fixing a greenhouse gas into an organic solid.
Burning a dead Christmas tree to ash releases all of that C02 back into the atmosphere. Don't do that.
The better thing is to compost it, although some C02 will be released as it is being decomposed...But no where anything near the C02 if the tree is burned.
The best thing is to not buy a cut Christmas tree at all, eschew artificial trees, and do something original
I once talk to a US Park Police Officer (who have jurisdiction over Ocean Beach) and he told me that they just tell the people who setting these fires that it is illegal. The people are not cited at all.
Burning the tree seems better than dumping it on the street! They should set up special areas just for burning trees so the waste is contained in one area.
Why do they need to be burned? "Tradition" or no he said there were chippers there to shred the trees. At least the chips have a useful purpose, as opposed to the smoke emitted into the atmosphere and the trash the maroons left behind.
I was on the beach today at a party, groups to the left and right of us were setting multiple trees on fire, they seemed to have had an endless supply...

Those are not my Xmas tree. They are my Festivas trees so no worries. I did not break the rule that the sign imposed.

So $125 in fines for burning a tree. No wonder people are not complying.

@KendrickSF That's a cool story bro, but people are going to be releasing CO2 one way or tother at Ocean Beach. The bonfires happen either way.

Fine should be like using a handislap placard. $970!
But, with "dozens" of trees, it would appear there wasn't any law enforcement there to issue citations anyway.
