A tragic tale of a daughter finding the dad she never knew. Seeing that he was barely making it on what he could sell (house, car, blood), and in the grip of trying to find hope for his soul before he dies - quite possibly a former evangelist or pastor that exchanged his life of marriage and child for the "higher calling" of religion. And soon it will be time to be accountable.
I agree, yes, thats what i also gather from this tale.
But i would add a thing or two. If you please.
What strikes me is the hopelesness of the song/situation, she did came looking something MORE than what she found, and that is so sad.
I might be totally wrong in this but maybe she had hopes, that her father was something more than white trash living in a trailer and listnin gospel whole day.
Who wrote this remarkable song? Can anyone tell me?

She wrote it with a few other writers. It is beautiful. One of my favorite songs on the album.
