Sounds great. I've had mine for 7 years now and it still shakes the house! This thing is ridiculously loud, never cranked it past 5 or 6. My bandmates always bitch at me to turn it down. Obviously the lead channel really shreds but i can get most of the tones I need with the crunch mode on the clean channel. Now I'm lookin to get a new rig, torn between a JCM 800 or a Mesa Roadster. I want that crunchy EL34 tone.
@demian113... Normally I advocate against pedals in favor of the amp distortions. However, I recomend you try out the Digitech RP1000. You don't need to but a new amp if you ge tthat. Im not trying to sell you that to you but since I tried it myself, I can't believe I ever did without it. It makes my cheap amp sound good.
@zer0dahero Thanx for the advice, but I'm definitely more of an amp distortion fan. I'm old school when it comes to effects too so I stick to analog stuff like Electro-harmonix for my live rig. There's just this processed tone you get with digital stuff that I can't get over, except for stuff like delays. Just out of curiosity, what amp do you use with the RP100?
I understand and thats my philosophy too. With ther RP1000 I use a 100watt crate or a 75 watt marshall or a 20watt practice. Still, I gotta say that that RP1000 sold me on digital processors. In the 90's, i had a DOD rack mount effects processor for all my chorus/delay/phase ect.. but that digitech thing took place of all my effects, to include my crybaby. Like I said, I couldn't believe I got along without it so long. You don't have to use the distortion but you can use all the other effects.
Yeah a multi-fx processor through your fx loop work very well for modulation, delay, etc. When I worked at Guitar Center I tried every guitar effect/processor you can imagine, but in the end I'm an analog purist except for certain fx like delay. Don't get me wrong you can get tons of amazing tones w/digital fx. The funny thing about being obsessed with tone is that audiences @ shows will not even notice the difference whether ur playing analog or digital, just if you're good or bad.
You make a good point. Tone chasers go a great lengh to get the tone they like but he audience normally won't notice any difference. Imho thats a good thing tho.
Thanks, I posted my settings for this video somewhere in the comments a while back I think so look em through and you should find them. I sold the amp a while back tho (wish I hadnt)
Haha, I got my 5150 for 400$ w/brand new tubes and i was about to sell it but then my brother said "why dont you play it for one last time and see if you really want to sell it" so then I did and I did not sell it haha
I had too many guitars, when I was selling them, Id play guitars I hadnt touched in a while on the day of the sale.. Usually made me remember why I bought it and regret selling it :p
the same thing happened to me iu was selling guitars and i sold me 1992 esp viper w/emg 81 and 60 for 200 bucks...the next day i was like "why the hell did i sell it" lol
There's a combo verson (this one) which is amplifier and speakers in 1 and it's 60 watts. There is also the head version, which is just the amplifier and you can hook it up to a speaker cabinet. That one is 120 watts.
Guys, I figured out how to make the 5150 Combo sound 100 times better, more clear and with more earth shattering low end. I added a BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer and it's insane perfect. You wouldn't believe the difference.
Hey dude. I think you have great tone there, but still hard to tell with the quality of youtube.... What is your settings on the amp, for high gain? Cause I have the same amp, retubed with JJ's, and it's kinda hard to find that right spot, you know :) Nice tonetest.
Hey man, thanks. I dont remember what the settings were but I think I posted it a while back, so look through the comments, it should be there. Good luck
Does your recording make your setup sound more bassy than it really is? I just got the same 5150 Combo the other day with brand new set of JJ tubes and I'm a little disappointed at not being able to get earth shattering low end. I just changed my settings to mimic yours and it sounded pretty damn close to where I was before.
I havent used this amp in my band, but any high gain amp should have a noise gate when used in a band setting. The ISP Decimator is supposed to be the best, but the BOSS NS2 also works great and costs less
yo i used to have this problem too. just make sure if your playing loud(post gain >3) that you dont turn the rhythm or lead pre too high. with higher volumes you dont need as much pre gain
i have a 5150 II 120 watts head with marshall cab and...it suck...badbadbad...don t buy 5150 to play metal man.!!!BUY MARSHALL HEAD OR YOU WILL REGRET IT ...SERIOUSLY!!!ON STAGE MARSHALL BYPASS PEAVEY 100%THAT S ALL

Yes I do have a band. We play Heavy/Thrash Metal and the 5150 is easily WAY more than loud enough. It blew everything away at half volume, cut through great and sounded awesome.
Either your 5150 is broken or you dont know how to use it.
This sounds way better in person, it's pretty hard to find a good sound test on youtube cuz youtube ruins the sound quality, and most mics don't pick up the godliness high gain amps like the 5150 have to offer :0
Yeah, it does sound a lot better in person.. I didnt even mic it, its just recorded through the small mic thats built in the camera. Its not even a video cam, just a picture cam that can record short videos :P
hey i was just wondering if the esp has a great shred sound on the neck pickup...and what are some of your setting bc i love them nad i dont wnt to coppy but get a basic idea on how to get that type of sound
yeah, ESPs are great for shredding. This one has an EMG 60 in the neck, which is great for cleans but also for leads. Just for shredding you´d probably want a 81 or 85 in the neck (as far as EMGs go). Look through some of the replies, I posted my settings there a while ago.
I have a combo as well, and its amazing. Quick question: My distortion has literally no bass in it, but my clean channel is so bassy and rich. I replaced the tubes like 3 yrs ago and a reverb tank. Time for new tubes or....?!!!! THANKS!
They used 5150 heads. Jesper uses both 5150's and 5150 II's. While Bjorn I believe is strictly 5150. They don't use pedals or anything for distortion, just the amp's distortion and lots of post eq'ing.
I will post a video shortly 'demoing' mine -- not because I want people to hear me play, but because there is a lack of tone demos for the 5150 Combo on Youtube. I'm not sure a whole lot of people know what a great product this thing is!
Hey man, thanks. This is just the first setting I came up with, I can always tweak it to sound even better (I hope :P). Right now I got some different settings tho cuz Im experimenting with recording, I got a Shure SM57 mic and a little mixboard and Im gonna try some recordings this week
Now this part is important. I think the best feature and the most important one affecting the sound is pre/post dial. On both channels, there is a pre gain dial, where you set how much crunch or tone etc you want from that channel, and a post gain, where you can set your volume for that channel. This means you can get huge valve tones at minimal volume, unlike many other valve amps.
The lead channel has one of the most massive sounds I've heard from an amp. I've used Marshall JCM 800's 900's JMPs TSLs etc. I find you can only get the 'Marshall' sound from it, which I find a little thin and generic.
The closed back design of the amp means that you can get great bass resonance from it, so it really blends well with a bass guitar in a live situation.
The clean channel has a clear high end with alot of depth to it too. What I like about it is that there is 'bright' switch on the amp to add a little extra top, and a 'crunch' switch (unfortunately only on the amp, no remote footswitch for this function) that boosts the preamp gain, which I find great for blues or beefing up chords with.
I have a 5150 combo that I run a les paul through and a Boss DD-20 for delay, that is it. I have to say, I'm not so much into my metal, which is the sound this amp is renowned for, but you can get everything in between too.
The reverb is a basic spring reverb on it, though it adds a little extra ambience to the clean especially. I believe that you don't actually get the reverb with the head version.
I just got it, so I havent changed the tubes yet. I think they're still the stock tubes, as the previous owner used it for about 1,5 or 2 years and then kept it in the attic till I bought it.
I have the EH pre's and Sovtek Power's. I'm going to agree with you on the hiss! But the tone is still incredible. How much did the JJ's change the tone for you, as I think the tone I have is exactly what I'm after, and afraid I might lose some of that if I change the valves
The JJs did change the tone, but I thought for the better. They have a much warmer 'mid-rich' sound to them, which is more of a Marshall (Slash) tone, but the EVH tones can still be dialed in easilly using the amp's EQ.
Really, to get a REAL EVH tone, you have to have the amp's post volume on about 7, and by then the preamp tube sound effects your overall sound much less, and your power amp tubes are the ones that matter more.
There's no mic, just the little mic built in the camera I used to record it.. Pretty good sound for a camera mic, but it sounds better in real life of course
I have the combo but the reverb doesn't work. Were you using the reverb at the beginning? Was it set low? I don't know if it's worth repairing the reverb or not.
Great sound by the way, I hope to be half as accomplished one day.
man i heard the combos better then the head because you dont have to go as loud to get a good tone, because the more tubes the louder you gotta play to get better tone, but the combo has 2 less tubes then the head, is that true? im either getting a 5150, 5150 combo or a 6505/6505 combo im probably gonna go combo, so i can hook it up to my cab hen i wanna crank it
That is correct. The 5150/6505 combos have 2 power-amp tubes, instead of the 4 that the head version has. However, don't expect it to be very much quieter than the head version. I have never had my combo over "4" post volume -- and at 3 it started getting painful, and moving things on the wall in my basement.
Excellent work! The EVH 5150 is one of all time favorites. Used to be my amp of choice until I got a Phaez "Chopper"

Just curious, do you have JJ preamp tubes in your 5150?
I just replaced my hissy/buzzy Electro-Harmonics tubes with JJ's and the difference is incredible.

So... For using the amp in quiet situations, select tone by getting pre-tubes.
For using the amp cranked, select your tone by getting power-tubes.

Setting??

very good sound man ! I like the crunch alot! Lack a little bit of mids but its probably due to the mic position.
denispillman 4 years ago
There's no mic, just the little mic built in the camera I used to record it.. Pretty good sound for a camera mic, but it sounds better in real life of course

Thanks. I did have the reverb on at the beginning, but I think it wasnt set that high

Love that crunch sound.
I have the combo but the reverb doesn't work. Were you using the reverb at the beginning? Was it set low? I don't know if it's worth repairing the reverb or not.
Great sound by the way, I hope to be half as accomplished one day.

man i heard the combos better then the head because you dont have to go as loud to get a good tone, because the more tubes the louder you gotta play to get better tone, but the combo has 2 less tubes then the head, is that true? im either getting a 5150, 5150 combo or a 6505/6505 combo im probably gonna go combo, so i can hook it up to my cab hen i wanna crank it
snapascrew 4 years ago
That is correct. The 5150/6505 combos have 2 power-amp tubes, instead of the 4 that the head version has. However, don't expect it to be very much quieter than the head version. I have never had my combo over "4" post volume -- and at 3 it started getting painful, and moving things on the wall in my basement.
