I've been wanting to get some good animations done for quite a while, but it's only recently that I've had enough free time to get some done. Lip synching is one of those areas I've never been clear on, and this video really helps! Thanks a bunch! :D
This movie is really handy for the World of Warcraft machinima community. The low polygons models have nothing but 'open/closed and wide/narrow'. I was confused about how to properly lipsync with so few vertices, but I see now that basic lipsync needs only 2 shapes. Thanks alot.
Hey DJ, the video was very helpful, I was expecting to see you actually animate lip syncs in a program, but this video helped me understand how to think about the lip sync even before I enter the program. I was wondering do you have a video on the Micro Expression?
wow awesome. Stumbled on this for 2D animation class - and had no idea about the micro-expressions. Very informative that was a well spent 11 minutes thanks mate ;). God bless.
Good video man, this was really helpful for me, especially that bit with the arm on the table so you can tell when your jaw is opening. I subscribed to your channel and will check out some of the other videos when I have the time.
I was wondering what exactly is meant with Extreme Keys, Storytelling keys and Inbetween keys, i heard you mention 2 of those terms, but i can't really find the exact meaning of them. An example in your explanation would really help clarify ;).
1) Storytelling Keys are any keys or poses that need to be there in order to tell the story. This could be something like pointing, shrugging, or getting hit in the face. These keys tell the story of the scene you are animating.
2) Extreme Keys are keys that mark an extreme in the motion of anything, such as the peak of a bounce (it's extreme high) or when it contacts the ground (it's extreme low). Extremes usually occur just before a change of direction...
...and so mark the "extreme" position of that object, limb or character for that particular motion.
3) Inbetween Keys are keys that are put "in-between" all other keys to better describe the movement. The inbetween usually determines if the object travels on a curve, slows in or out, and basically helps to polish the animation.
Hey there, thanks for the tips! I'm working on a traditional 3D cut-out lipsync animation for school. I really want to get the right mouth shapes before I can start animating it. Any tips for that?
@Schmaurens yeah, don't use traditional mouth shapes. All you need is: Wide, Narrow, Open, Closed. If you want to go a bit extra, then add an "M" shape and an "F/V" shape.
awesome! 5/5! i would assume your talking about 3D animation considering you mentioned weight to the animation. i work with 2D animation and i use flash CS3. soon to be upgrading to CS5. regardless of 3D or 2D this was very helpful.
@msjastad - For mouth shapes I just feel whether my mouth is wide or narrow and open or closed. I try to stay away from traditional phonemes where you sculpt all of the different letter sounds. If you stick with wide-narrow and open-closed you will have very convincing facial animation. Then you just put in the F's, V's, P's and TH's wherever necessary.
@thadeej - Thanks!! I'll give it a go, it's a bit difficult though because I suck at drawing and can't seem to get the mouth to look on my character, he's slight of at a 3 quarter view and I can't seem to rotate the straight or side view, + my character (Viktor Van Vending) is a vampire vending machine.. And I want the fangs to always show, is this a good idea? Or should I try and close the mouth fully?
oh i was always scared about lip sync sir , thanx a lot .. but can we know more about you ?? ,, where are you working ?? how many years have u been animating ,,
ok i've got a question what about if u already drawed a good sketch of a front view and a side view but you want to make them turn at an angle where they are not front view or side view but some where in the middle , what is the best and fast'est way to sketch this out while keeping the details of your charector.
hi deej, really excellent video by the way. I was just wondering if you could point me in the direction of the best way to rig a characters face. I use maya and my current method is creating blend shapes for everything and adjusting each blend shape value in the attribute editor. I thought I had the whole process nailed down until I saw people moving everything with controllers around the face, which looks much more logical. Do you know of any good tutorials on this? Thanks for your time:)
woah. this is extremely helpful! thanks for uploading this

@Courax Great question!

I hope those explanations help!

Otherwise a super helpful video :) Love the fist under the chin trick!!
