Dogs like walking around with people. Lobsters belong in the water, not being dragged around the streets by a piece of ribbon. That's why its more ridiculous than a dog and why its a cruel way to make a stupid point. Bourgeois idea of pets? Commons sense idea of pets.
and not caring at all about what others think and feel about our actions and how others perceive and judge us, can't that become a total egoism?
of course our freedom is fine if we don't hurt someone else's freedom, but at the same time *fulfilling* expectations of society (like a basic one: having a child) or of our peers, shows that we don't only care about ourselves. right?
egoism is good and necessary, I guess, but I was referring to having too much of it. and yes not doing what you want to avoid hurting someone else *is* deviation from egoism.
i guess what i was trying to express was that we can (and should) free ourselves from norms and social expectations, but wanting social recognition is at the same time very natural, as long as we live in a society..
Egoism is only good enough for you to protect your well being and self. To go any further than that- to hurt people for the sake of one's ego that would be taking it to the extreme. Everything we have, we possess whether physically or mentally is in the end a tool to further our aims in life, we have the choice to use it extensively or not at all, to use it to harm or to help. In the end it boils down to our intention, whether the ends is worth the means or whether we can...
...justify our use of it to our established ideas of right and wrong, of the morality in our thoughts and actions. For me, everything boils down to one question: "Will it help or will it hurt?" If it hurts, I refrain. If it helps, I act. However one must always have in mind that our perspective always begins from one dimension, and to see the situation as it truly is, we have to look outside of our perspective- not what I do is justified all the time despite what I think otherwise.
to say that ownership has no meaning at all is strange; sure it doesn't mean much to own your car, but what about your child? I'm not saying you *own* it, but you certainly know that it is your child and you tend to protect it and care for it more than for any other child. Isn't that innate in a way?
others animals seem to behave this way too, like marking *their* territory
and this guy lives a simple life, but he does smoke..

who says egoism is bad? also, isn't it a deviation from egoism if you restrain yourself from enjoyable actions that hurt other people?

I once liked a quote by Shakespeare that says "Give every man your ear but few thy voice, take each man's censure but reserve they judgment"
it's pretty unrealistic, but I think it gets the meaning through

animals mark territory as a safety measure. Humans in the modern world do it to determine how they are different ( ie doing better) than others

To abandon others opinions of our selves is very important, perhaps one of the best ways of overcoming status anxiety.
