Missing the point completely. How could someone ask that sort of question. It's the sort of nitpicking that speaks volumes about the mentality of the people who just want their question to be aired, people who have never been touched by these books at all.
The intelligent man I referred to was Mr. Bradbury himself, actually.
I am not calling the interview or the interviewer (you) bad, I actually gave it the highest rating possible as it was still genuinely enjoyable. Just saying that Harper Collins asked a bad first volley of questions. In the end it was a very good overall interview.
The citizens of F451 would have HAD to know how to read in order to understand the writing on those gigantic billboard adverts and car manuals and instructions and to do their jobs e.t.c. But real invividual thought was banned, that's the POINT of Fahrenheit 451.
These questions are clearly not from people who actually want to know anything about him, or about the stories or his thoughts.
These are really STUPID, Ray's quite right. It's great that he's still trying to please the fans by giving up his time to answer these, but it's a waste of his time, the questions are clearly not from people who are trying to be insightful or clever, or who care about his books and ideas, they're just idiots playing smartass. Obviously the citizens of F451 could read, they just weren't allowed REAL literature, because REAL ideas would have made people unhappy or provoked rebellious thoughts.
this guy is an idiot, Ray Bradbury is an amazing author and these questions answer themselves inside his books

How did Montag learn how to read?

Insightful. I'd say to ray1bradbury to put away that firehose. I found this video gave a little window into Ray's religious beliefs.
