Lá viola de Bashmet é uma viola tamanho 42. Parece grande porque ele tem somente 1,64 de altura. Zukermann por exemplo tem 1.85 e a viola 42 parece pequena.

As a Hungarian myself I can tell there are many tasteless things in his interpretation. Those accents at the beginning are downright disturbing and unnecessarily exaggerated. In general I do not sense his love for this particular piece contrary to most of his other recordings. It is great to be free but to fall into the trap op mannerism is to be avoided.
@lekmioas I am also Hungarian. That hardly makes you (or me) an expert on this music. Now, if you are a Hungarian viola player who has played this with a reputable orchestra, your comments MAY mean a little more. But just being Hungarian is not enough. That's like saying that only an Israeli can properly understand Perlman.
@bckm54 I do not consider myself an expert on Hungarian music but I do happen to be a violist-violinist who has played this piece several times. I generally dislike interpretions that want to differ just for the sake of it. This performance does strike me as tastelessly contrived, full of bad mannerisms. He is a phenomenal player but sometimes less and simple IS more. I do not believe anyone earns the right to do anything with a take-it-or-leave it attitude. STYLE is something to learn.
Yes, his accents were a bit to sharp for my taste (I prefer the more rounded bow speed accents at the beginning myself) but either way it is a beautiful piece performed with such passion.
yeh, i cant understand how he could possibly play the opening theme the way he did , i wonder what the orchestra was secretly thinking haha. maybe it was a big fuck you to everyone, or maybe i just listen to zukerman to often. although the sound he can create always amazed me, i thought he was useing a mute when he started playing!
I'm a bassoon player, and both versions are awesome, but if I'm not mistaken, the original was for viola, the bassoon version, by Weber himself, came later!
I have an edition which superposes both! The Bassoon seems to be more elaborate on the Rondo!
What a wonderful music, but what a boring interpretation!!!!it´s a shame, one of the best violist ever...
just as an experiment, close your eyes and listen to... you never believe that is the great Bashmet playing!!!sounds like a nice etude..where is the frasing, dynamics, counterpoint???
Have to say that Eb Major section is nice, that´s all!
seeing this in such great visual quality is quite a treat. WELL DONE!! but I want bassooooooon -__- lol!

Legallybrunette1234 3 years ago 14
maybe thats why he did them
mojozohobo 2 years ago
no, i just said that because everybody was saying the accents weren't needed.
Legallybrunette1234 2 years ago 3
Yeah, its not on the music but your right I think it was a good idea to put them in.

yeah accents were pretty sharp but its still really good :)

He's so tense when he plays. His sound could be so much more resonant if he were to physically relax a bit (great musician none the less)
admankramer 3 years ago
He's just right, IMO. It takes a little more strength to get the full sound out of the note on a viola.
vaust 3 years ago
Yuri B.'s interpretation of music is very extreme, as usual. But he is truely one of the best Violist in the world.

he plays the rhythm incorrectly at the beginning

Sounds cool but very stylistically WRONG. But hey if you are that famous I guess you can afford it.

Yeah I just don't know how I feel about those ridiculous accents at the beginning. But no doubt he is a baller at playing.

However yes, I know what you're saying. However, I still find it beautiful.

Do you know who transcribed this version?!
I am playing the one that Primrose transcribed and it seems to be incredibly different!
fhiggs 4 years ago
It is original for basoon, and Weber transcribed himself for viola. you have Primrose "edition" not version!
