In the beginning when AB "goes" to Japan, it says "Lake Mashu"??? Lake Mashu is actually in Hokkaido, at the very top of the island...and it is supposed to be one of the clearest lakes in the world...but it IS true that many of the Japanese salt fields are down there...
I've been to the fish packers of Gloucester, Massachusetts at low tide. I've been within range and downwind of one of these salt facilities. I could spend a lifetime debating with myself which I find less pleasant.
So it's kind of like mining coal, the techniques they used. Some of the equipment their using has preserved examples at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry in the Coal Mine Exhibit for those who are interested.
@murleman nah, it takes much more than a small amount of salt water to kill you. If you ever go play in the ocean near the beaches of the Atlantic of Pacific chances are you'v had a few gulpfulls of salt water. It doesn't taste good, but it takes more than a few accidental sips to cause problems.
"If it doesn't look exactly like the salt in your salt cellar at home, well, there's a few good reasons... for one, we're in a really dark hole in the ground."
Besides most of theses recipes only use the salt as a cooking medium. As such most of the salt doesn't end up in the food. Tell her she should worry more about eating at the local burger joint then anything you'd make featured on this show.
My grandma spent her whole life eating pickled foods, and salt ridden foods, and she lived to be 88. I think it's other things that are making people unhealthy, like, eating too much in general? :P
