  • I'm running gnewsense "metad" with gcc/g++ 4.3.2, GNU gdb 6.8-debian, GNU emacs 23.1.1. I decided not to upgrade from "metad" to the next version. This version is based on debian lenny. I believe the upgrade is based on squeeze and has a more resource-hungry version of gnome.

  • The gnewsense has a full GNU toolchain? Or at least gcc/g++, binutils, and gdb? What about emacs or zile?

  • About 2:05 to get to a login menu. (It hangs for :20 at the grub boot menu) Still 3:00 to fully boot.

  • @mnjk256 I don't know if it is grub's fault but I know that grub is not meant for the Yeeloong. In fact the traditionnal Debian distro on the original Yeeloong by lemote don't use it at all ! It goes from pmon (the bios) to the kernel without any bootloader, like the arm platfrom in fact but with an opensource bios.

  • @ElectronikHeartWT I like grub very much, except that it's slow in this case. I don't actually like to spend my time on low-level languages and operating systems. It's not my favorite thing. This computer has just worked for me, right out of the box. I haven't spent any time messing around with the hardware.

  • Not much different I expect. I'll test it later today and post it.

  • You're probably right, but this machine is running a standard linux OS. Are there some quality netbooks with ARM cpu now? There weren't any when I purchased this machine.

  • @mnjk256 As of now, what is the boot time?

  • damn. 3 mins for bootup? Sorry I love free and open IT but this is unusable. Every 500MHz Arm chip is faster than this.

  • It seems it should be easy to configure E17 on any GNU/linux. I hadn't heard of E17 until you mentioned it.I am actually interested in using it with no display manager and no window manager. This machine is currently running gNewSense metad, based on debian "lenny". I have no time currently to mess around with the configuration:(

  • I think Debian with E17 would be a nice blingy look and a performance boost. Bodhi Linux (a distro promoting E17) could possibly be persuaded to build for MIPS from a Debian base.

  • ...action...

  • The bootup is slow, but I've got a great OS running on MIPS/little-endian architecture. It's awesome that linux ecosystem supports MIPS architecture:)

  • Even apple is better than this

  • @Jogurt4action Fuck apple and job's fake, they are a fucking thiefs that stolen the UNIX arquitecture computer and make money with this,however,GNU/LINUX is the real unix in arquitecture and philosophy.Close your mouth because Apple is a fucking fake and gnu/linux is the real,¡Long live the free software¡.By a Ubuntu 10.10 user

  • @angelruiz21 I like backtrack but unbut is not my style.... And i hate apple BTW and i konw that this is fake.......... So yes this is true...

  • @angelruiz21 HaHa , implying Ubuntu IS free software...

  • Well, you get no awards for boot time or performance.

  • If this were a desktop machine, and included a faster processor and a better screen, then I might consider getting one. But it's a start point though.

  • While you're waiting for this ridiculously slow laptop to boot up, you can go ahead and sing Richard Stallman's 'Free Software' song to yourself. Twice.

  • @0endscene0 Ouch, what a cheap way to get an ego boost. Bashing work of those who give to the community, otherwise known as us. - @mnjk256 Have you since tried to speed up the boot process?

  • @TeDiouS1001 I understand the criticism, because people I work with had similar, negative reactions. They just don't get it. I have not tried to speed up the boot process. Instead I plan to set it up for a no-GUI bootup. We can't expect everyone to understand what's important to us.

  • @mnjk256 Yeah.. - Now to a very important question: Where did you get yours?

  • Thanks for the video. Waiting for mine that will run under OpenBSD =)

Hope they will improve battery life on second generation of it.

  • Very funny. I know it is long.

  • This is a loooong boot...

  • It has a fan, so no it's not passively cooled. No, it's not completely silent. Battery life is decent at about 2 hours. I don't believe there is a Flash plugin available for this machine, but you can get some functionality with gnash or swfdec. DOSBox and WINE will depend on the OS. I don't see them in the repos for gnewsense "metad". You could try to compile them from source. Power draw is 4W. For more information look at the datasheet for "STLS2F".
