i have a question what does phony mean? overall im reading the book but i cant quite understand the meaning... i mean holden looks like everything anooyes the crap out of him and he always talks about people the wrong way, saying bad things about them even if hes friends with them. o well i guess i have to read the whole book
@Dianarocks Phony is the goddam people always trying to look good and not be corny, like Stradlater and his perfect hair, being something they're not. I'd have two hemorrhage if anyone ever came to me that wasn't phony, but everyone--from Pencey's fancy ads with kids riding horses, to the nuns who accept my money--is phony as goddam hell, I tell you. Phoebe, she's not corny or phony. But, she's just a little kid who thinks Santa really is the bearded man down at Gimbel's. She doesn't count.
@DeizelMassacre I thought I remember reading his old girlfriend said he had his work separated into color-coded categories, some signifying they were complete, others that they needed editing. This makes me think he knew they'd eventually be poured over, eventually published. I think the real reason he continued his absence from print, though not why he started it, was he worried that after all this time, anything he'd release would be seen as a let-down. I doubt he was right, though.
If you really want me to tell you about it, this is likely Windsor, VT, judging by all the phony people and the parking meters and all. JD went there daily for his mail and a bite to eat at the diner. He was a madman that way. I know it's corny and all, but that's goddam Windsor, across the river from Cornish.
