In order for selfish people to keep these animals as pets the captive breeding monkeys are kept in cages & not handled. The resulting babies are cold heartledly pulled from the screaming distressed mums at 1 day old in order to be bottle fed & hand reared ready to sell as pets at a few weeks old for approx 4500 dollars (£2800). Adults are sold on when no longer wanted. Do animal lovers really support this? Rescuing unwanted or neglected animals is commendable but this sad trade is shameful :0(
@rachelcapt225 Do you really think its ok for the mums & babies to be torn apart just so selfish people can have one as a pet and as you say "enjoy them"? Any young primate reared by its mum (even if she is a pet) will not need to make a dependant bond with its human owner which is what people seek. Please dont kid yourself that the videos of cutely dressed baby monkeys were not the result of this cruel practice.

i know a woman who wants to get a capucian, and i dont know what to say to convince her not to.....she has a tiny home and i just know the poor animal would be miserable. not to mention she runs a business out of her home and clients are allways comming in and out-i'm terrified someone will get hurt!
If someone works from home and can be there to look after the monkey, keep it out of things, and train it regularly, and not have to leave it locked in a cage all day, a monkey can be an appropriate pet(depending on species). There is a reason that capuchin's are being trained to assist disabled people. With every generation monkey's get closer to being domesticated, so it's only a matter of time.
And as far as a monkey specifically, you can't speak for all species universally. Each species is different and behaves differently. Capuchin monkies are extremely intelligent, almost up there with some of the great apes. Thus they need a lot of mental stimulus in their environment. They are also an animal that has social structures, opening up the possibility of putting yourself at the top of the hierarchy, like with dogs. Something you will never accomplish with a cat since they are solitary.
While it's true that a monkey is not the right choice of pet for the majority of people, these kind of videos are misleading. All animals are wild and there is a fine line between domesticated and wild. Domesticated animals are bred specifically based on which individuals interact with humans the best until the final product is a fairly docile animal around humans but that by no means ensure's safety. Just look at dog mauling instances. If cats were bigger there'd be a lot of dead children.
There is a documentary film called "The Elephant in the Living Room" which explores the controversial American subculture of raising the deadliest and most exotic animals on earth as common household pets.
You can watch the trailer on youtube. Just search for:
The Elephant in the Living Room - A Michael Webber Film
@vegantony A 2lb monkey is not "deadly" and that entire premise is utterly retarded, people from all around the world have and still do keep exotic pets, it's by no means an american fad in any way shape or form. It's a human tendency.
Finally, a video after my own thoughts. Your video acknowledges the negative aspects of owning a primate or ape as a pet; most people can't see that they are not intentional pets! I am utterly disgusted by those who dress primates as they were dolls, and treat them as babies - so many animals are sufferring because someone wanted to try and keep them in the house instead of letting nature take its course.

The mama would look all over for the damm thing, because it would just explode. Getting the babys and forcing draino up their ass was fun too. It took them almost 5 hours to die. Cutting the arms and legs off were another option too.
I seldom get to kill monkeys anymore, I really miss it.
i really don't see any difference from this monkey and a curious baby.. i have a pet squirrel monkey and none of this stuff happens to me unless it's something he's never seen before.
And they should definitely be allowed to live in peace in their natural enviroment! Bonobos, chimpanzees, all other primates and other animals. If only humans would just stop taking the space away from all other animals on Earth...There is room for all of us here! But seriously, leave wild monkeys(and other animals too) where they belong.
It's kind of insulting and creepy that people would keep a monkey(not to mention an ape!)as a "pet" These are our closest living animal relatives on this planet! Almost the same DNA as ours!I just can't think about or treat them the same way that I would a cat or dog for example. They are TOO intelligent and sensitive and need much more attention than any other animals. We should relate to them with huge respect. In many ways monkeys are a bit like very young and over excited humans with a tail.
@MsAzure77 This is true, but the big difference is, these kids never grow up. People who get them as infants, that have been ganked from their mothers, think and threat them like a human infant, they deny that they have expectations that they will " grow out of the naughty kid stage" But they are lieing, its just human nature to expect all babies, and young ones to mature. Monkeys mature but not to the level their new "parents" would wish them to.
Im getting a capuchin monkey she's about 2 months old or something anyway my question for the commenters here is it true no matter how much you train them they bite? I already know what i would need like a gym made for her and stuff and etc
They all bite eventually. They are wild animals. If they are trained correctly you will probably never get bitten badly enough to need stitches, but its very likely that someday a guest in your home will be bitten that badly.
@beckibear22 This is true, they all bite. Like beckibear23 said with CONSTANT training, you can usually get them to a point where they only give mild bites to their troop members ( their humans), but only if the training begins as infants. If you roughhouse with your baby monkey you teach it that biting is ok, and as they grow so does their bite strength.
@MrNiteryder No offense, but if you are asking a question like that, you are not ready for Primate ownership of ANY kind. If it is not too late, please reconcider until you have done more research on the matter. Otherwise I fear, your pet will end up one of the 100's that end up with care takers like me and my family. I have been around Capuchins for 40 years. They ARE NOT a pet to take lightly.
@MrNiteryder Just a bit of advise, dont leave the baby clinging to a teddy or something like that, you need to keep it moving, make it feel more natural, lack of movement can cause monkeys mental problems, most leading to bad behaviour
these monkey need lots of enrichment in there lifes. they are not for every one. but i personaly know lots of monkeys that have great homes with people. they dont act like the monkey in the video. its like taking a farrel cat off the street and video taping it and saying this is why cats dont make good pets of course the cat will hiss and scratch it was rasied wild and the monkey in the video was rasied in a zoo by its parents not by people in a home that will teach it rules.
Actually these monkeys were raised by professional animal trainers who brought them home every night until they 1.5 years old. This is how monkeys act. They are wild animals. Even when they are raised in a home and have rules.
@gkeeper86 NO YOUR CLUELESS I OWN TWO BLACK CAPS AND HAVE A USDA LIC. I HAVE BEN AROUND PRIMATES FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS. THEY ACT ALOT DIFFERNT IF RASIED IN A HOME BY GOOD CARE TAKERS. I HAVE WORKED WITH HUMAN RASIED MONKEYS AND MONKEY RAISED MONKEYS. I HAVE ALSO DONE FIELD RESERCH WITH CAPUCHINS IN SOUTH AMERICA. SO WHO IS CLUELESS.
@bigjaybird21 so you've done a bit of "field research" and your an expert. i wouldn't be able to keep pet primates after seein them in the wild. i've worked with primates in zoos and even that got to much. For the past 5 years i've been at a primate rescue centre and its because of people like you i have a job. i have to clean up all your fucking mess. most of our time is spent trying to rehabilitate hand reared primates, they don't no what they are or how to act around others of their own kind.
@gkeeper86@gkeeper86 NO YOUR CLUELESS I OWN TWO BLACK CAPS AND HAVE A USDA LIC. SO WHO IS CLUELESS?
These people who live so selfish lives and don't know what it is to share themslves with anyone or anybody love picking on animals. then they get a degree and really consider themselves experts. but they continue to be the same selfish people they ever were.
this monkey was not raised in a home by people. It was rasied in a zoo. so how can you say this is how a pet primate would act. the smashing you see in the video is instined. in the wild black caps use rocks to brake nuts. they are the only monkey to use tools. the stealing and eating every thing in the video is natural to monkeys they have to hunt down there food monkeys are not pets they are more of a member of the family this is the same kind of monkey they give to paralized people as helpers
Ok first of all. Everything that monkey is doing and all the reaason not to leave one home alone are the same thing as to not leave your five year old alone. so we shouldnt multiply either?. I honestly took that to ofennse. monkeys need the training and the love. you tryed to apply them as bad creatures. mr I am getting a monkey and I bet you if you put effort into it, it wont be all that much of a hasle. no more that raiseing your own baby.
All animals were wild and not trained at one time, many still arent. I think if a person has the right resources and training no one should stop them from getting one.
What that monkey needs is punishment for acting stupid? Would you let a kid act that way? (Please say no!)
I would get a cattle prod, and give him a good zap everytime he acts stupid! They are perfectly legal! That monkey would be tamed in two days if I had it!!
No. Wild animals, especially monkeys, cannot be domesticated. It took thousands of years to domesticate wolves (dogs) and cats and they still bite. Monkeys have huge teeth and VERY strong jaws. I work at a monkey sanctuary.
The artist on the song is correct. I used an unpublished song in order to distribute the video in any way I wanted without running into copyright infringement issues. I have passed on all the great comments to the artist.
To avoid infringement issues the best thing to do is tell the viewers who the song is bound to by Copyright. And you know, The song name would be a big help in all this, It will get a lot of people to stop filling the comments with "WHATS THE NAME OF THE SONG, SONG NAME PLZ" and the such.
you don't avoid infringement right by telling people who it is 'bound to' or any other details about the song - the only way to avoid infringement rights is to have written permission to use that song - some video''s have the audio pulled by youtube even when they put all the song details - its makes no difference- partners have to find music which has no copyrights because you have to declare you have written rights to any song before you upload the video for revenue sharing! its a pain!
You know, Not having a monkey as a pet is all fine and dandy n all, and Sure you have the right to express that you feel they shouldnt be kept as pets, and I acknowledge this.
Now. How about the name of the song? It seems the artist you provided in the credits was incorrect. It would be nice to get a song name.
Sure, you can, until they reach a certain age and become more aggressive. Then, like many primate pet owners you can choose to have their teeth pulled out and the tips of their fingers clipped off so they won't grow nails anymore. You'd do that to a cat or dog right? Look, "training" a non-domesticated species as a pet has another more accurate term, it's called "abuse". If you think owning a monkey is cool or a good idea you haven't researched the consequences enough.
You can teach them almost as much as a dog or a bird, but they have to wear diapers. Too stupid to be housebroken, they happily live in their own filth. Monkeys drink their own urine and eat their own shit.
AND we are not related. The big DNA lie is that even fish have 90% similar DNA to humans-it means nothing. Even insects are 80% similar, using the same 4 base pairs.
What in Hells name ...Makes you an expert. I have two monkeys and have had no problems like yours. Maybe a book on Animal behaviorism is in your future.
My Master's in Primate Conservation, my 17 years of working in the exotic and domestic pet industry and my 8 years of working with primates in zoological facilities, my award from AZA regarding my work on primate behavior, having personally raised baby monkeys for sale and taking care of their breeding parents. Any other comments about my qualifications? I am glad to hear you have not had problems with your monkeys, though i still cannot condone the practice of keeping them as pets.
it really upsets and angers me that even now after all the up to date research and info people still insist on keeping these magnificent animals as pets!!
with all due respect, it's precisely this attitude that's causing so many problems. Many people do have the resource to keep them as pets & there are several examples of excellent relationships forming (agreed there are much more where it's disasterous). The wild isn't necessarily better than a domesticated life - nature is very very harsh and it's not this black and white. If our side wasn't dominated by anti-domestication zealots a lot more could be done- especially for former Research victims
wow, wanting them to burn in hell? i hope you arent believing in hell from a christian perspective, cuz if you are, then you are a fucking hypocrite. ;)
let's not compare monkeys to cats and dogs, dogs have been genetically changed over hundreds of years from wolves. monkeys have not.. why are people so ignorant of this??
Although that's a highly debatable position to take, consider how close to extinction many primates are, especially old world primates. Ownership by people with means to take care of them would certainly lead to more being born and more being protected. Why not start to process of 'genetically changing' them now as opposed to the very likely outcome of extinction for many of them? And many people have wolves as pets btw.
If you take a normal house cat and abandon it where it lives in a feral colony, the kittens will certainly be feral which are horrendous pets. But you can take a feral kitten and raise it away from it's original environment and have a fine pet. Domestication has much more to do with nurture than nature.
the wild is the best habitat for a monkey until man destroys it. animals have a moral right to live in the wild and be with their own kind even if they are preyed upon.this is not an excuse for domesticationhow sad it is that we need to domesticate animals in order for them to survive on this planet. dogs have naturally scavenged for food from humans i do not believe that anyone can provide a monkey's habitat and it's socially complex relationships.usually pets are treated like toys or objects.
My family has had a pet capuchin for over 18 years. Millie is sweet and, for a monkey, very well behaved. We take her to our grandmother's nursing home once a week and delight the elderly. I mean, come on, dogs and cats were wild animals at one time. Someone had to take the time to domesticate them! And primates are wild animals? What the hell are we classified as? Gods?
What happened to the capuchin after 18 years? They can live to well over 50 years. The primate sanctuary where I work had a call from a woman who had a capuchin for 30 years and then the monkey attacked her. They are very strong and very dangerous.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I think it's outrageous when people take monkeys in to be 'pets'. They deserve to be raised in a natural environement, not dressed up like dolls and paraded around.
What's more, those buying these creatures give little concern to the way they were taken from their mothers! Do the right thing...if you care at all, DON'T ADOPT!
ok I didn't see this monkey mess up anything my two year old wouldn't have messed up giving the chance! And what is the monkey in the video your PET dog??? Hello don't have monkeys but I can! That just don't sound right to me!
I'm getting a monkey and when the novelty wears off or it gets to be too much trouble. I'll just get rid of the fuckin thing...I imagine if you dropped it off in a ghetto somewhere it would fit right in with the moolies. It could be a rapper or an NBA star and live a good life.
I don't think people who have primates as pets think about the animals. I don't think most are intentionally cruel, except the ones that pull their teeth to prevent biting and cut off their fingers so they cannot escpae their cages. However, the very act of having a monkey as a pet is cruel. Babies are pulled causing trauma to both baby and mom, and don't think just because you brought him home and gave him expensive toys that he will ever forget that.
No. But they help people and are becoming more and more popular with helping the disabled. You need to do way more research. They are really great animals.
Helper monkeys are not pets. As I already said, they go through serious training before being placed. Just like seeing eye dogs are not pets. Don't be confused.
primates are considered great pets by who exactly. I don't know one primatologist who would agree with you. Do you know that they have to rip the babies away from their mothers in order to get it to you. How cruel is that? primates have the intelligence of a 4yr old, 4 yr olds are not pets! I agree with you they are really great animals, but they do not deserve to suffer that way.
MsAzure77 1 year ago 2
It's kind of insulting and creepy that people would keep a monkey(not to mention an ape!)as a "pet" These are our closest living animal relatives on this planet! Almost the same DNA as ours!I just can't think about or treat them the same way that I would a cat or dog for example. They are TOO intelligent and sensitive and need much more attention than any other animals. We should relate to them with huge respect. In many ways monkeys are a bit like very young and over excited humans with a tail.
MsAzure77 1 year ago

MrNiteryder 2 years ago
They all bite eventually. They are wild animals. If they are trained correctly you will probably never get bitten badly enough to need stitches, but its very likely that someday a guest in your home will be bitten that badly.
beckibear22 2 years ago 5
@beckibear22 This is true, they all bite. Like beckibear23 said with CONSTANT training, you can usually get them to a point where they only give mild bites to their troop members ( their humans), but only if the training begins as infants. If you roughhouse with your baby monkey you teach it that biting is ok, and as they grow so does their bite strength.
Oreocremerocks 1 year ago
@beckibear22 can i get like my house made or some one to monkey sit it, until i come back ??
aboudqadi 1 year ago
@MrNiteryder No offense, but if you are asking a question like that, you are not ready for Primate ownership of ANY kind. If it is not too late, please reconcider until you have done more research on the matter. Otherwise I fear, your pet will end up one of the 100's that end up with care takers like me and my family. I have been around Capuchins for 40 years. They ARE NOT a pet to take lightly.

DIHORY 1 year ago
@MrNiteryder Just a bit of advise, dont leave the baby clinging to a teddy or something like that, you need to keep it moving, make it feel more natural, lack of movement can cause monkeys mental problems, most leading to bad behaviour

these monkey need lots of enrichment in there lifes. they are not for every one. but i personaly know lots of monkeys that have great homes with people. they dont act like the monkey in the video. its like taking a farrel cat off the street and video taping it and saying this is why cats dont make good pets of course the cat will hiss and scratch it was rasied wild and the monkey in the video was rasied in a zoo by its parents not by people in a home that will teach it rules.
bigjaybird21 2 years ago 6
Actually these monkeys were raised by professional animal trainers who brought them home every night until they 1.5 years old. This is how monkeys act. They are wild animals. Even when they are raised in a home and have rules.

These people who live so selfish lives and don't know what it is to share themslves with anyone or anybody love picking on animals. then they get a degree and really consider themselves experts. but they continue to be the same selfish people they ever were.
alfteck 1 year ago 2
this monkey was not raised in a home by people.

I have passed on all the great comments to the artist.
beckibear22 2 years ago
To avoid infringement issues the best thing to do is tell the viewers who the song is bound to by Copyright. And you know, The song name would be a big help in all this, It will get a lot of people to stop filling the comments with "WHATS THE NAME OF THE SONG, SONG NAME PLZ" and the such.
Bann3dd 2 years ago
you don't avoid infringement right by telling people who it is 'bound to' or any other details about the song - the only way to avoid infringement rights is to have written permission to use that song - some video''s have the audio pulled by youtube even when they put all the song details - its makes no difference- partners have to find music which has no copyrights because you have to declare you have written rights to any song before you upload the video for revenue sharing! its a pain!

Although this won't help anyone find this unpublished song here's the title...

Hey... what song is this.
luvbeat92 2 years ago
I agree they are can be a handful but if you train them properly then they are a great companion
Curlyjoe113 2 years ago
Sure, you can, until they reach a certain age and become more aggressive. Then, like many primate pet owners you can choose to have their teeth pulled out and the tips of their fingers clipped off so they won't grow nails anymore. You'd do that to a cat or dog right? Look, "training" a non-domesticated species as a pet has another more accurate term, it's called "abuse". If you think owning a monkey is cool or a good idea you haven't researched the consequences enough.

Bullshit.
They are stupid as slugs.
So quit the monkeys are smart bullshit.

it really upsets and angers me that even now after all the up to date research and info people still insist on keeping these magnificent animals as pets!!
kkeerriiee382 3 years ago 2
with all due respect, it's precisely this attitude that's causing so many problems. Many people do have the resource to keep them as pets & there are several examples of excellent relationships forming (agreed there are much more where it's disasterous). The wild isn't necessarily better than a domesticated life - nature is very very harsh and it's not this black and white. If our side wasn't dominated by anti-domestication zealots a lot more could be done- especially for former Research victims

let's not compare monkeys to cats and dogs, dogs have been genetically changed over hundreds of years from wolves. monkeys have not.. why are people so ignorant of this??
cafeaulait69 3 years ago
Although that's a highly debatable position to take, consider how close to extinction many primates are, especially old world primates. Ownership by people with means to take care of them would certainly lead to more being born and more being protected. Why not start to process of 'genetically changing' them now as opposed to the very likely outcome of extinction for many of them? And many people have wolves as pets btw.
WilliamGRyan 3 years ago
If you take a normal house cat and abandon it where it lives in a feral colony, the kittens will certainly be feral which are horrendous pets. But you can take a feral kitten and raise it away from it's original environment and have a fine pet. Domestication has much more to do with nurture than nature.
WilliamGRyan 3 years ago 6
the wild is the best habitat for a monkey until man destroys it. animals have a moral right to live in the wild and be with their own kind even if they are preyed upon.this is not an excuse for domesticationhow sad it is that we need to domesticate animals in order for them to survive on this planet. dogs have naturally scavenged for food from humans i do not believe that anyone can provide a monkey's habitat and it's socially complex relationships.usually pets are treated like toys or objects.

What is the name of the song used in the video
wraith3920 3 years ago
My family has had a pet capuchin for over 18 years. Millie is sweet and, for a monkey, very well behaved. We take her to our grandmother's nursing home once a week and delight the elderly. I mean, come on, dogs and cats were wild animals at one time. Someone had to take the time to domesticate them! And primates are wild animals? What the hell are we classified as? Gods?
sarahBcentric 3 years ago
What happened to the capuchin after 18 years? They can live to well over 50 years. The primate sanctuary where I work had a call from a woman who had a capuchin for 30 years and then the monkey attacked her. They are very strong and very dangerous.
saraquack 2 years ago
whats the song called?
starwarstori 3 years ago
Thank you so much for posting this video. I think it's outrageous when people take monkeys in to be 'pets'. They deserve to be raised in a natural environement, not dressed up like dolls and paraded around.
What's more, those buying these creatures give little concern to the way they were taken from their mothers! Do the right thing...if you care at all, DON'T ADOPT!
brb123a 3 years ago

fukinblowme 3 years ago
I don't think people who have primates as pets think about the animals. I don't think most are intentionally cruel, except the ones that pull their teeth to prevent biting and cut off their fingers so they cannot escpae their cages. However, the very act of having a monkey as a pet is cruel. Babies are pulled causing trauma to both baby and mom, and don't think just because you brought him home and gave him expensive toys that he will ever forget that.
allysia02 3 years ago
Actually, primates are considered great pets.
Should primates be as common as cats and dogs?
No. But they help people and are becoming more and more popular with helping the disabled. You need to do way more research. They are really great animals.
ashleynl101 3 years ago
Helper monkeys are not pets. As I already said, they go through serious training before being placed. Just like seeing eye dogs are not pets. Don't be confused.
beckibear22 3 years ago
primates are considered great pets by who exactly. I don't know one primatologist who would agree with you. Do you know that they have to rip the babies away from their mothers in order to get it to you. How cruel is that? primates have the intelligence of a 4yr old, 4 yr olds are not pets! I agree with you they are really great animals, but they do not deserve to suffer that way.
allysia02 3 years ago
What idiot would consider primates as a great pet?
