In the UK we got this one for theatrical and the other 'slept too long' ending on video and TV. It was cashed in on the video market as having a 'never before seen ending'.

A later retail VHS had both - starting with the sleeping too long and then showing this one after the end credits from about more or less this point.

well, it depends how you see it. the other ending was first intended and also favoured by both Raimi and Campbell, but Universal thinks it's too dark, so they wanted another ending, which is this. the movie was shown with this ending, so you can say it's the "original release". but since the other ending was first intended and also shot, i would say the other ending is the real one. the other ending is also the one you find in most of the DVD-versions

Army of Darkness is one of my all time favorite Comedy/Horror movies ever (along with House 1, 2 , 4, High Spirits and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark). It's funny that people still don't know what "Comedy/Horror" means. This film was fantastic. Visual effects were great. Bruce Campbell showed brilliant acting 4 this kind of films. Embeth Davidtz was awesome. Other characters (Wiseman, Duke the Red, Possessed Witch) were no less inpressive. My lovely Bridget Fonda deserved more screen time though
