You think a song about heartbreak and disappointment and loss is any less about emotions because it features aggressive guitars? And they've always been a band with a pop sensibility, which explains why they've had so many hit singles. It's not like they went from being Metallica to being Maroon 5. They've always been somewhere in between everything.
