wow that was incredible! it wasnt that the tricks were expecially difficult, like olympic difficulty obviously (still quite incredible) but it was so CLEAN! there was hardly a mishap that i could see.
I don't think gymnasts are very graceful. Yeah sure they are talented and very good at what they do but ballet is a whole different story. Ballet is romantic, graceful and beautiful. It has so much more freedom and passion. Gymnastics is so rigid and rehearsed. There isn't a lot of life in it. BTW the gymnast in the video is very good.

Second off, you cannot judge on just one gymnast;s routine alone. Watch the balance beam, why don't cha? Or, possibly, watch Nastia Liukin. Or watch Shawn Johnson. Sure, she doesn't dance all that great, but you can't say there isn't any life in her floor routines. Please, don't judge so quickly.

I think GymnastS was simply exhibiting a knee-jerk response to the criticisms often given gymnasts. I will agree with the original post that today's gymnasts in general severely lack artistic expression, I don't even think Nastia surpasses this to a great degree, all poses and little choreography...
However, this was not always the case. Gitta Erscher of GDR had poise and position on beam that could only be called balletic. Kathy Johnson's performances were more releve' than reverse hecht, Baraksanova could not strike a bad position, and for something more recent, View any of Boguinskaya's routines 86-92.
They have almost no time to show any artistic expression because they have to fit 4-5 tumbling passes all in a minute and a half. I would say that would be pretty hard to truly dance when you need to save your energy for tumbling.
Henrietta Onodi, Kathy Johnson (I really like her), Svetlana Boginskaya, Svetlana Khorkina, Oksana Omelianchik (especially in 1985-1986), Daniela Silivas, and many others are VERY balletic!
Lady gymnasts are some of the most beautiful women in the world. Years of dedication go into being so toned (not musclebound ... toned) and incredibly graceful. Perhaps the ballet is as graceful, but doubtful anywhere else.
