it's equally likely that you have competition whether you're in the middle or at the side, it's just that, as you've said, you may have to compete with more people in the middle (though unlogical: think why would 1 person, with 2 people on both sides, all fight for 1 flag? only 1 person will be eliminated so having 3 people competing is unnecessary)

But honestly, I think running fast isn't the biggest factor is getting the flag. I think the head start is reall important. The getting up and turning around really wastes alot of time if you don't do it swiftly enough. I noticed Hyoyeon is nearly always the first to get up and turn around, maybe because this kind of flexibility exercise is common in dancing, hence she and the other main dancers would have an advantage I think.
