He quit for a number of reasons. One he didn't have any great fights waiting for him. Another was he was tired of his manager taking so much money. Last, he lost his desire to fight, and couldn't commit to training the way he had.
Like this fight, he won a lot on conditioning. Without it, he'd have been a very vulnerable fighter. It's better he quit once he lost his zest for training rather than pull an Ali and fight for money.
@carlitoboxing7 no. he wasn't. that's a dopey comment. marciano simply hit you eveyrwhere, in your face, your elbow, your ribs, your gut, your breastplate lol he didn't give a fuck lol he was the best, bar NONE ..FUCK tyson and ali lol 49-0 with 43 knockouts isn't a fluke jack. END OF STORY.
Archie Moore was not only a great fighter, but he could take a hell of a beating, too. Anybody that can stand and trade punches with "The Rock" is one heck of a man in my book. What stamina these fighters had!
I think Archie woulda done much better at age 28 than 38 (40?). But still Rocky may have worn him out just the same, KOing him in the 12th instead of the 9th.
This fight was the reason Marciano decided to retire. Moore was tough as hell, and took Marcianos best. Even giving it back to him in the round after being knocked down twice., and then come on to win the next round as well. Marciano knew he might not be able to carry on aginst a younger man as tough as Moore was. So he wisely retired. Though him fighting Patterson might have been interesting. If Patterson didn't get hurt, he might have taken Marciano on points with his speed.
@Ghstwn could have been an interesting fight but realistically I don't see any way Patterson could have avoided getting hit by Rocky at some point in the fight. Marciano was, at worst, no worse than Sonny Liston and he punched just as hard.
You can't watch this fight without gaining more respect for the loser than the winner. Moore has to be one of the toughest men to ever get into the ring. Marciano is Marciano, also very tough, but the type of beating Moore took, and kept getting up and recovering until it was impossible, shows such will, character and toughness, it's hard to imagine. Skill is one thing, but when it goes with that type of toughness, it makes him an all time great. And he's no HW, he's a LH. Incredible.
Moore had too much courage. For all his supposed smarts, he tried a stupid tactic early in trying to back Marciano up, even though his knock down came when he was moving back and Marciano leaping forward.
He should have boxed more, and stopped thinking he was so smart he could outsmart Marciano for the first rounds and back him up. Dumb. That's Marciano's fight, and Moore learned it too late. If he boxed early, and used the ring, he'd have made a better fight.
Great fight. If Moore was 10 years younger he may have won this fight if he stayed outside & didn't trade with Rocky. He's 1 of the GOAT showed amazing guts & heart. Though past his prime he was still world class here but was always far better as a LHW. Rocky did what he does best & gave Archie a brutal beating. Thanks again for posting the fight.
@DrMo249 I hate when people always come to a legends video and try and claim "oh well if he was in his prime he wouldve won" Get real man, moore was gutsy, and a decent fighter, but rocky was the better fighter, no matter how he won. And for the record, Rocky wasn't even in his prime 100 percent yet, so if you're going to pull the "what if" card, do it from both sides man
@BlinkBoyBrad weither he wore him out, or knocked him out is irrelivent. the point is he won. and I'm not taking anything away from Marciano. I used to watch Marciano's fights with my grandfather when I was a little kid in the early 50's. Grandpa used to show me (round for round) how Rocky was beating his opponents. Although today he wouldn't be a heavy weight, he'd probably be a cruiser, or a light-heavy weight. All historians of the game respect Marciano. As do I.
@AntiFeminaziMale probably, Marciano had an incredable training routine. And no matter what anyone says, the point is he DID beat Moore. But Moore himself was a warrior and you shouldn't take anything away from him. Rocky probably could have fought a few more years and had a higher number record, but he had nothing left to prove. Look at all the fighters who stayed in the ring longer than they should have.
ARCHIE MOORE WAS THE BETTER BOXER BUT MARCIANO TOOK HIS HEART IN THIS FITE

@liljoerox I tend to agree with you. Even if Rocky didn't manage to get to his head, I doubt Patterson could have handled the body shots very long.
