I think, in this case, the resulting final logo was the best. Some of the other designs looked messy, and some looked too political. A couple of the rejects were OK though...
The introduction to the segment is done by the host of the Design episode of Media Probes; fashion designer Bill Blass. Herb Lubalin is the designer of this famous PBS logo.
Great find, MattBL! Where did you get this from? I've been looking for a DVD of this Media Probes program as well as the seven others that were done, on the subjects of Political Campaigns, Television News, Soap Operas, Soundaround, Photography, and I can't remember what the other two programs in the series were about.
The Face from the PBS logo is actually facing right nowadays. I can't believe the obsession they have about their political profile.

This is very interesting! I always thought that the P-Head was their first idea, because of the public, and the smart programming.

Uh, all I see in front of me is a big B. That's why I have to look to the left.

Why did they ever flip the logo in the 1980s?

Most of these were featured in a TV ad from member station WTVS Detroit, featuring the Lionel Richie song "Say You, Say Me".

So THIS is how the 1971 PBS ID came about, huh?

I wonder how the PBS station logos of the 1970s were designed...

It had been the jingle, played on a Moog Modular synthesizer, composed by Paul Alan Levi, that added a spooky element to this I.D. logo.

@Aspergian I followed your advice on your monologue. I went to the site. I downloaded it and I took the part where it talks about the PBS logo.
:D
