so... just saying... ive done clinics with Pat Parelli, Clinton Anderson, Charmayne James, Tiffany Poulin, and even one exclusive one with Brittani Parazzi, and all of them say that you SHOULD grab the horn. it keeps your ass down, shoulders and hands forward, and keeps you in the center of the horses back, so you don't throw them off balance by bouncing. so stop whining about how good riders dont grab the horn, because KNOWLEDGABLE riders DO grab the horn.

I grab the horn too, its hard to hang on when your horse is goin that fast. :D And when you hang on and dont throw your horse off, then you can go FASTER! Not hanging on could throw your horse off and slow ya down so...how is that possible?

AphroditeAllure: holding the horn actually helps the horse get around the barrel. Keeps the rider more balanced so the horse isn't thrown off balance and can get around and on to the next barrel as fast as he can. There a lot more to barrel racing then speed..

I would like to say to AphroditeAllure, that that's great if you don't have to grab your horn. But grabbing my horn around those barrels helps me sit my ASS in that seat so that i don't go flying foreward onto my horses neck. So you ride how you ride and the rest of us barrel racers( who might have learned from racers who have gone to plenty of state finals that have taught them to grab there horns) will grab our horns. NOT cause were bad riders cause were GOOD riders. So have a good year! =)

@quarabhusky A lot of professional barrel racers suggest that you don't grab your horn, simply because having both hands on the reins allows for more precise control of the horse's head and shoulders. It takes practice to be able to sit the turns correctly, but as long as you have a good seat you should be able to sit your turns without holding the horn. There isn't a right and a wrong way, but I'd much rather have the extra control that both hands gives me.
